Today, a diabetic diet is one that uses a controlled carbohydrate intake to achieve appropriate blood sugar levels. A calorie amount is determined for one's weight (or weight goal) and then about 45-50% of those calories come from foods containing carbohydrate---using primarily healthy types of carbs. The remaining calories come from protein and healthy fat sources. The carb amount is then divided into meals and snacks throughout the day.
