OMG I love beignets! That one place there makes the best ones!!

When I was teaching my son to cook, we made them once...they are so easy to make:

I can't believe you mentioned beignets. As soon as you said that....I just want one!! emoticon

I visited Philadelphia a couple years ago. And had to have a real cheese steak. Never mind the fat and calories.

Kind of like if you visit Chicago, you must have deep dish pizza. And if you visit NOLA you must have a beignet. (I dont know how to spell that.)

Lol, woman, how could you have never had a Philly cheesesteak, living so close Philly? emoticon

If you are ever in Philly - 45th and Walnut (edge of University City), you have got to go to Saads Halal Place...best food in the city :) www.saadhalal.com/. He makes a Lamb Shawarma Maroosh style sandwich (aka the lammy sammy) that is to die for!!!

Holy smokes, now I know what I am craving today ha ha ha ha

Eelpie, I'm from south jersey about 20-30 minutes outside of Philly though I've never had a Philly cheese steak. Lol!

Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions! Can't wait to give them a try!!! Will be satisfying that craving soon!

I am also a stickler for the original.

If you must have a substitute. I would make it myself. With a lean cut of beef and lower fat cheese. With lots of onions and mushrooms sautéed in a little oil. Whole wheat buns are not much better than their white counter part. So I would get a really good bun from the bakery.

I am also not diabetic. So I don't know how the bakery bun would affect your blood sugar. Maybe eat lower carb all day. To save your carbs for that bun?

We are actually having cheesesteaks tonight for dinner! To cut back on fat, I'm using leftover chuck roast I made the other day which has most of the fat cooked out of it and it super tender; and rather than sautéing the mushrooms, onions and peppers with a bunch of butter, I have them cooking in a small crockpot with a teeny bit of butter. They'll still have the flavor and the right texture, but without all the fat. Also, because I recently found out my blood sugar is really high, I'm trying to watch my carbs as well. Instead of eating it on a giant bun, I'm going to lay half a whole wheat bun on it's side, add the meat, toppings and a slice of low fat cheese and throw it in the oven to toast. Maybe this would work for you too?

Are you from the Philly area? I am ...and seriously, there is nothing like a good cheesesteak. Whew.

That said...there is a lot of "alternatives" to the classic you can try...me? I'm a stickler for the original.

Can you get one and split it with someone? Eat half for dinner, and half for lunch the next day? Sometimes if the roll is beat the next day (wrapping it with paper towels helps draw the moisture off of it overnight) I take the filling and heat it up and have it over a salad.

I don't have diabetes, so I've no idea how half of one would impact you......

We love cheesesteak too, but we have converted over to using chicken instead of steak, and do more of an open face sandwich, that cuts down on the bread. Other then that, try and reduce the amount of oil you use when frying, and increase the amount of veggies to meat ratio.

could you try sauteeing some mushrooms and onions in a little bit of olive oil [a teaspoon of oil is plenty to start the onions and the mushrooms will just add their juices to cook in if you add them when the onions are close to done]. then try to find a whole grain wrap or something like a bagel thin, whatever bread product you like enough. add the steak, some of the mushroom/onion mixture and then melt some cheese on it.
or try a bed of salad greens. add some sliced up steak, sauteed mushrooms [or raw], onions [sauteed or raw] and some cheese to top.
another option could be stuffed mushrooms. make a steak and onion and a little cheese to bind it on stuffing and enjoy. or you could bake or grill the mushroom cap and layer on onion and cheese and steak like you would pizza toppings.

-google first. ask questions later.

Been craving a mushroom cheese steak with fried onions and extra cheese :( Is there a healthy alternative to this? Watching my cholesterol due to high numbers. Also borderline diabetic so I've been trying very hard with what I put in my mouth.
