I use Zone Perfect bars... they're tasty, but not overly so.... hard to binge on them. They're dense also. 12 grams of protein, 190 calories. OR, if you want to get something that tastes, well, not bad but not great (so you won't be tempted), I would use the Power Bar Protein Plus... 20 grams of protein, 210 calories, but like I say, you won't eat two in a sitting or even an entire day. They're great for after weight training.

I try to stay away from protein bars because they are so caloric, and you can often get in the same amount of protein by eating some yogurt or double the protein by eating some greek yogurt. And yogurt is about 100-200 calories less than protein bars!

If you still want to try protein bars I recommend the more 'natural' kinds that aren't pumped full of chemicals. Larabars and Cliff bars are good ones.

I've just been checking out this very topic, for my Mom, who's almost 80 and doesn't eat enough protein and won't really eat anything that doesn't taste like dessert.

If you're buying a bar, keep in mind that they aren't all protein bars. Some are energy bars (more carbs, probably), some have an emphasis on minimally processed ingredients, some are all-round nutrition bars, and the bad ones are just candy bars with healthier marketing. In my situation, they have to taste like candy bars or Mom will politely thank me for them, then put them in the cupboard and ignore them until I throw them away 5 years later.

Some possibilities are Pure Protein (lots of votes for taste), Zone Bars (or Zone Perfect, not sure how that one's different), Muscle Milk bars, Cliff Builder bars, and Quest bars. Those are the highest protein ones I've seen.

Most people don't need half their day's protein in one bar, so if you need an energy bar, I'd have a Kind bar or a Lara bar. Kind bars have simple, quality ingredients and I can personally vouch for the good taste of those.

I have just received a box of Quest bars. I got them because I could really do with upping my protein and I like the idea you can cook with them.

It's ok - it's whatever floats your boat in this life.

Like, for me...the thought of eating anything that comes from a fast food restaurant skeeves me out. In a really big way. But, hey...that's just me.

It's an option for some people - I wouldn't try to crucify them for it - it's in their tummy, not mine :)

I agree about dressings, I prefer my salads natural.
I could use authentic statements or false ones. I think choosing to falsely support a behavior (ingesting processed materials) is unloving towards what I really seek to support, which is the health of the person. People don't always have to agree; I do however think we have to be honest if we want authentic interactions which foster growth and learning. I encourage people, not behaviors I have seen do harm to people in the long run because I genuinely love people and am saddened at the devastating results misleading nutrition information has left on those who innocently trusted lies. We can, as a society, continue to downward spiral, or choose to embrace the truth.

I find any kind of fast food revolting. It was an example.

I'd much rather have the processed honey than anything from McDonalds. The salads with dressing have way too much of sodium. No way. Not in my diet. Now, I could eat them without the dressing...or I could have the bar.....

I also can't do food from gas stations. I guess I'm picky that way :)

The bars work for me in a pinch - and I don't judge others that eat them in that manner, either.

I would encourage a chicken salad from mcD's long before a bar containing processed honey. I prefer keep a vacuum sealed tuna packet or organic turkey jerky in my bag. Most gas stations now offer fresh fruit as well.

I hear what you are saying, but sometimes for convenience they are a good option.

I keep 3 in my glove box for emergencies - I never want to be out running around saying "oh my I'm hungry, I've nothing to eat, I won't be home for 2 hours...hey...McDonalds!!"

No, it's much, much better for me to have that emergency bar prepacked made of nuts, fruit, honey and dark chocolate. I can have it in the glove box and forget about it till needed. Unfortunately, pears spoil, so leaving one in my glove box for 2 months isn't the best idea for me.

Now I could just get nuts...but nuts can sometimes be a trigger food for me to have in the house (sounds odd, yeah?) but it's true, so buying nuts (any nuts, peanuts, almonds, walnuts) can be an iffy proposition for me...I learned the hard way.

While I eat 99.99% of my meals whole foods - the occasional Kind Bar does have place in my diet.

I live communal living, and we all have to agree to the food - Kind Bars is what we all decided we could live with (taste and ingredient wise).

lol...now that I think about it - those Kind Bars are the only "junk" food in the house. Oh, yeah, pretzels - one person loves these crazy organic pretzels. Other than that, all we keep is popcorn and fruit.

I feel like bars have become such a social norm, like a Band-Aid hiding the fact that we no longer take the time to give our bodies what they really need at the time.
For example: Lara-bars, the only all-natural one I've seen, is truly whole ingredients, the ingredients aren't really what most Americans are needing. Dates, used to sweeten most of the flavors, are basically pure sugar with very little other nutrient content. The nuts and coconut found in some of their bars are good, but why not just carry your own around in a baggy and save a lot of money; its still portable and minus the unneeded sugar. Some of them contain fruit, but guess what, fruit is portable too. An apple in a bag won't rot in one day.

I encourage people to see the truth; whole foods are the key to attaining the healthiest body. People say its inconvenient to prepare their meals, but why have we reached this point where taking care of ourselves is so low on our to-do list? I am much better able to help others if I am healthy and happy with myself.

I love the Quest cookies and cream bars!

I try to get my protein from whole foods but after a really intense workout I'll have a Quest bar as a post workout snack =)

For protein: Quest Bars
(They have great flavor (my favorites are cinnamon roll, double chocolate chunk, and cookies and cream!!) and 20g protein fro 160-210 cals per bar.)

For energy/quick snack bar: Lara Bars
(all natural ingredients, great tastes, and come in a wide variety of flavors!)

But, I would recommend getting protein/food from whole sources first. Like hardboiled eggs or cottage cheese

The article that Coach Tanya shared below is a great resource.

I'm trying to stick more to whole foods now, but when I used to eat more processed foods I went for the Special K Protein Meal Bars. They're under 200 calories and have around 5 grams of fiber and 10 grams of protein..and the chocolate peanut butter flavor actually tasted pretty good.

If you're looking for something a little less processed, I second Kind and Larabars. They both have very simple ingredients. Or, definitely try making some of your own...it will probably save you some money too.

Try Larabars, especially the Uber ones - they are very tasty and don't have any junk in them - simple ingredients.

I love Quest Bars. Whatever you get, ensure they have low sugar, low cals, and lots of protein. Otherwise you may as well just be eating a chocolate bar.

I would make homemade.
If it is portable protein you are seeking, have you considered turkey jerky or string cheese?

I have seen some to die for looking recipes for homemade ones online. Whew!

We get Kind Bars. My favourite are the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt and the Peanut Butter.

They sell them in a lot of stores, but we get ours from Amazon.

Can anyone recommend a brand of protein bars? I looked at a few in the healthfood store but the labelling was very confusing that I am pursuaded to simply make my own. Any recommendations?
