I may be in the minority, but I still weigh myself. Because I track not only my weight but my body fat percentage I can still sort of track, though excess water does sometimes skew the results.

Just don't weigh yourself that week.

I try to drink more liquids, particularly hot tea, which is soothing and aids in preventing water retention. I can gain 4-5 pounds the week before Shark Week, and all of a sudden my pants are too tight and everything feels uncomfortable. And then it goes away. :-)

Oh Anarie! I love that idea! Thanks!

Stop trying to paddle against the current. Instead, point your boat downstream, put down your oars, and go with the flow. Enjoy life because that's what its all about.

Just count back 28 days and compare your weight to that one instead of to the previous week. Looking at long term trends is much more meaningful anyway, and most times you'll see the type of change you want to see. There's no reason to fight a perfectly natural process-- there's probably some reason it's actually good for you to retain water, or else our bodies wouldn't work that way.

It may sound strange but exercise can actually help with bloating caused by your period. The activity helps to keep things moving. Not only can it help keep the bloating down, but it can also help with cramps. I used to want to just crawl into bed. Now, I may want to do that, but I go work out instead and it does make it feel better.

I seem to benefit from more rest, walking, raw foods, crying, less salt, and understanding the scale's reading may be high.

Keeping away from salty foods may work for you. Cutting down on your intake of salt and sodium, a week prior to your period will ensure that you donít look all puffed up...also artificial sweeteners can cause puffiness....malitol and sorbitol can cause bloat!

Another trick may be to eat Rye bread with seeds...rye eases constipation and bloat because of the fiber arabinoxylan ... Saturated fat can trigger bloat and so can wheat.

A Little prune juice seems to help bloat and CHAMOLIE TEA helps with discomfort, and of course water.

Too many Carbs can cause gas & bloating such as rice, potatoes, and pasta, beans and peas...limit those a week before and see if that works for you.

The fact that you know that the results won't be in your favor should help you to feel at peace. During that time, concentrate on other signs of success besides the scale. Concentrate on your food intake, your fitness minutes, your mileage and let everything else sort it self out. And I agree with the previous poster - don't weight yourself that week!

Besides upping the water intake, what works for me is avoiding sodium. It's in so much stuff, too - so you have to carefully read labels (if you eat processed foods).

Otherwise, it's just one of those things...and at least it's temporary ;)

Lol, I think you answered your own question. ;)
That said, try to measure your success in other ways besides the scale. I know it's easier said than done, but think about your progress; think about how much better you feel, physically and mentally, by taking care of yourself with a healthy diet and exercise plan. Is it easier to put on shoes now that you are smaller? How much easier is it to walk up a flight of stairs? Do you have more energy? There are so many non-scale victories you can count among your successes. Just keep doing what you are doing and know that you are so much more than some number on a scale. Eventually, you will get to where you need to be. Keep smilin' and keep up the good work!

So as I approach that lovely time of the month, I'm wondering: is there any way to combat the water weight I normally retain that whole week? Obviously loading up on plenty of water could help some, but it never seems to help me. No matter what I do, the scale doesn't like to move that week, or it moves in the wrong direction. So I'm wondering if there is anything that I can try this month to fight it off?

I realize I'm probably just stuck with dealing with it though, lol. Oh well! The joys of being female!
