Becky is right .... there is NO need to apologize, and no, you weren't and aren't a bother!
You will still find the site very helpful - IMHO, the Nutrition Tracker is the BEST tool ever invented. It gives you the power to ensure that you meet your needs. Your Registered Dietitian would find it very helpful if between now and seeing him/her, you enter all your food, weighing it first for increased accuracy, and take some printouts to him/her to see. I know it proved invaluable for me.
Please don't feel that you were a bother. It is just that your needs require more medical and nutritional care than this site can provide. It is for your safety and so that you receive the most beneficial and appropriate care.
You can still use our site for tracking your food and fitness, for support and encouragement. It is just that the question you asked is above what we can safely answer via the computer.
Ensure and Boost are not protein shakes; these are meal replacement shakes or complete nutrition supplement shakes.
A protein shake provides primarily just "protein". The shakes you mention have protein, fat, carbs, and added vitamins/minerals supplements (including about 25% of iron needs in each can) to be equal to a meal.
Your situation really can not be addressed here at Sparkpeople by our members or experts. Since you are having difficulty meeting certain nutritional needs, since you are at risk for a nutrient deficiency due to a medical procedure, since you are having difficulty digesting certain foods---you need to meet with a Registered Dietitian who will have access to your medical history, labs; can talk to you about your tolerance issues---and then the dietitian will put together a plan to meet your complete food and nutritional needs. Call your local hospital and ask to speak with a dietitian who does outpatient therapy.
I just can't seem to keep my energy levels up since all the transfusions and I have a hard time digesting certain food. My Dr. did recommend protein shakes. Not as meal replacements but as additions. I was drinking ensures and boost and even the kelloggs protein shakes but they can get pricey. When I mentioned this to my Dr. she said it would likely help. I cannot take iron because during my medical disaster I had a colostomy which was later reversed but I have to avoid anything binding such as pain pills and iron. This makes it hard for me to get enough protein leaving me very tired and weak. I take 4 colace a day, 2 things of miralax and amatizia to try to get my intestines moving again but having not much luck. I was told flax seed will help and planned to add it to the protein shakes to try to help with the anemia and the intestines. Plus of course hoping it helps with my metabolism.

I am not sure why you feel you need a protein shake for having anemia in the past??? If you still struggle with your iron stores, you should be talking to your doctor about appropriate supplementation. Are you having difficulty meeting your protein needs for the day?
Because of your complex medical history recently; I too encourage you to get a referral from your doctor to see a Registered Dietitian.

Wow, I'm sorry you've had so much go wrong! When you say you've decided to add protein shakes to your diet, do you mean you on your own? Have you considered seeing a dietician who can provide you better nutritional advice than we here on Spark can? I usually see a dietician once or twice a year kind of as a check up. She always gives me some good advice and steers me in a good direction!

I'm in no position to offer any nutritional/medical advice, but I do have two yummy protein shakes I make very regularly.
For both of these I use Designer Whey French Vanilla protein powder, but I'm sure you could use any vanilla powder you prefer. Also, as a tip for the frozen banana, I chop up a few bananas and throw the slices into a freezer baggie, then pop a few out as I need them.
Strawberry Shake: few handfuls baby spinach (optional) 1 cup frozen strawberries 1/4-1/3 frozen banana 1 cup skim milk 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
Peanutbutter Banana Shake: few handfuls baby spinach 2 tbs peanut butter 1/2 frozen banana 1 cup skim milk 1 scoop vanilla protein powder 4 large ice cubes
Oh, and one more tip! If you're not used to protein powder (or spinach), you could try with half or less of the amounts, then gradually increase. That's what I had to do, now I love them!
OK.. so here goes... I just had 7 abdominal surgeries in the past 2 years. The surgeon said no to gastric bypass. I am 5' tall and weigh about 236 (depending on the scale I am standing on). I had several blood transfusions and become anemic quickly. Therefore I have decided to add protein shakes to my diet. Does anyone do this and if so are there any recipes you would like to share. Also do they seem to help with the weight loss. I walk alot during the day and once ot twice a week I do water aerobics since I am limited on the exercises I can do. Thank you for all your help. I have been signed up here for awhile but have just stared to become motivated since my medical disaster. God Bless
