Any water in any form counts as water: plain water, soda, herbal tea, true tea, decaffeinated and regular coffee, fruit juice and even beer, and also water from fruits and vegetables (most of them contain more than 80% water). Caffeinated coffee, tea and beer are NOT dehydrating. Caffeine and alcohol may slightly increase urine excretion, but the amount of water you get from these beverages by far exceeds the amount pushed out in the urine by alcohol or caffeine. All this is explained here:

EXOTEC,

Glad to learn that you have received education on your specific fluid restriction.
On a fluid restriction, it is usually assumed the amount of liquid contained in solid foods such as fruit, bread, etc.
Then the client is given direction on how to "count" anything that is fluid at room temperature. As you have stated---this includes all beverages, jello, soup broth, ice cream, etc.

That was a good informative link Becky posted. I hadn't seen that one before.

In my case, if I consumed that much liquid my doctor(s) would have apoplexy, unfortunately. Not that I don't *want* it! LOL They're just trying to control water retention. But that's just me.

Nevertheless, when fluid restriction was being discussed with me, I was told *any* fluid - water, tea, soups, flavored drinks, and even foods with high water content (such as gelatins) go into my daily allotment. I presume juicy fruits also factor into that to some degree... but since we're (ie, me and my DH) aren't supposed to be getting into that much juicy/sugary fruit, it hardly matters. It might matter for others, though!

Good question.

Personally, I don't count tea and coffee towards my water intake. I make tea and coffee quite strong, so, personally, I feel dehydrated after drinking tea or coffee. So, I simply count plain water towards my water intake.

I don't like coffee and definitely love sweet tea, but I have only had 2 glasses since Oct. Trying to drink only water most of the month.

the diuretic effect of coffee is way less than the amount of water that is in the coffee, so you can count it in your fluid intake as your net fluid from drinking it is still positive. If you don't want to count it though, even better, as long as you are over 3-4 litres a day, then the more water you drink, the better.

Well coffee and tea have caffene in them, which is de-hydrating, so I don't personally count them. But then again, I don't really count how many glasses of water I drink daily, I just know it's several. I think SOME of what you drink should be straight H2O, however, it's just better for you.

Each category of beverages (tea, coffee, diet drinks, milk, etc) has an upper limit set regarding overall health. This article has these amounts. Check to see if your daily intake is within the guidelines:

Yes, you can count tea and coffee as water or part of your total fluid intake.
Both tea can coffee hydrate the body as does water.

I count herbal tea, but not coffee or black tea.

I'm not sure that how you do this matters as long as you are consistent.

As Bunnykicks said, it's really entirely up to you. I count water, unsweetened fizzy water, tea, and coffee, and a typical day for me might be 3 or 4 cups of plain water 2 or 3 cups of fizzy water, and 4 or 5 cups of tea/coffee (mostly tea). If I only counted the plain water, I would never be anywhere near 8 cups, but if I added another 4 or 5 cups of water every day, I would be in the bathroom every 30 seconds.

It's worth noting, too, that the 8 cups of water you're supposed to have every day is not a magic number that applies to everyone. You need to be properly hydrated, certainly, but some of your hydration will come from other beverages (even--gasp!--soda :) ) and from the food you eat. The best way to determine whether you're drinking enough is not by counting cups of water (though I do, just because I like getting those 5 points :) ), but by the color of your urine. It should be pale yellow. HTH!

It's really up to you. Some people only count water, others count any non-caloric liquid, and yet others don't bother with the water counter at all.

I do consider coffee/tea as part of my "water"... because tea forms the main part of my liquid intake! If i had to drink 8 cups of water above and beyond at least that many cups of tea.... i'd float away! I don't actually use the counter anymore though, i found it easier just to log "x cups" or "x ounces" of coffee/tea/herbal-tea right in my nutrition tracker to keep an eye on it.
