I received a card in the mail yesterday and it had these quotes (along with a myriad more)

"Always remember that the future comes one day at a time" (Dean Acheson)

"Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there." (Will Rogers)

"If you want to make your dreams come true, the first thing you have to do is wake up." (J.M. Power)

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." (Lao Tzu)

"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why re recommend it daily." (Zig Ziglar)

(funny things to send have on a memorial card)

Anyway, I hope that they are food for thought!

Thank you everyone for your advice and support. I need to work on staying motivated and get my butt moving again. I was hoping for a quick fix, but as all of you stated, there really is no such thing. I have all of the knowledge in my head: food, execise etc. which is how I was successful before, but for some reason I am REALLY struggling with getting started and then when I do, staying motivated. The hope for a jumpstart was for motivation to keep going, but my health is more important. I really appreciate all of your comments and will move forward with my focus on getting healthy and physically in shape. TTYL

Thank you BunnyKicks! I appreciate your advice. I'm just going to have to buckle down and get started. I am struggling with staying motivated when I don't see results, but a quick fix isn't going to solve the problem. Take care!

A prescription drug called - BELVIQ. I have tried this med with my doctors orders and found success. This is not an amphetamine or stimulent. It will not keep you awake or give you a buzz. What it did for me was something that never happened before to me. I actually was simply put, 'not hungry for the first time in my life'. During this time, I was able to examine my eating habits and only ate because it was necessary for nutrition. This never happened to me - ever.
I followed a caloric reduction plan and lost weight. Then I stopped the med and continued with the good habits I established.

there is no pill out there that is truly safe to take. As others have posted, diet pills do not work.

Most diet pills work the same as a detox. you take the pill, stay on a plan, and in a few days you begin to lose water and body waste making the appearence of "weight loss" so technically yes to a degree. You Are NOT Losing FAT! Only Waste! I found them useless and expensive. I won't tell you what to do, that is your choice, but here is some advice...Before you decide to try a "diet" pill, check the ingredients, research them online. Some herbals can cause severe organ damage or other side effects. Only Lowering calories and exercise will make you lose Fat!

The answer is "no." I wish I could find the link to the article that was posted here on Spark People. The best thing to do is start small. Make healthy substitutions in your diet and add a minimum of 10 mins of exercise a day. When you can do more, then do it. The weight didn't come on over night and it won't come off over night. This is a marathon to live a healthy life style and not a sprint to a certain number on the scale. Stick w/ spark people and post here on the community boards and you will have a huge group of cheerleaders behind you.

Success = good habits X time.

The only issues you will have is lack of time ( deadline: ex. want to be X weight by wedding date ), and inability to stick to good habits.

If you can't stick to eating healthy, and exercising more, then you need to address why. It isn't because you aren't taking a pill, so taking a pill doesn't fix the underlying problem. Figure that out, and then all you need is time for you to drop whatever weight you need to lose.

The goal isn't to lose weight, but to do so in a manner in which you can continue for the rest of your life. What could be worse than losing all the weight, just to regain it.. both for your body, and your mind. It would suck, and could be harmful to your health.

Make a plan that you think you can stick to, which is compiled of healthy foods that you actually enjoy, and start a modest exercise plan, even if it is just walking. Stick to it, and adjust it, so you are steadily losing a bit of weight, and as time goes by, your exercise will increase, and you will lose more weight, and get healthier.

As SP suggests, make the goals modest, so that you hit them easily, and feel positive. If this is something you are going to do for the next 40-50 years, you want to feel good about it, and enjoy it. After all, it is part of your life.

When you read the testimonials on "weight loss supplements" you will find that people lose the same amount of weight as those of us who eat healthy and exercise.

They also always have a disclaimer on them that says
A. Not typical results and
B. When used with a healthy diet and exercise plan

So what's the point of wasting your money (and possibly your health) when you can get the exact same results by just changing what you eat and getting some exercise???

Most, if not all of them, say "when used with a healthy diet and exercise." In fact, the oners that I have used in the past have included an eating plan. So, the disclaimer says that the pills are not really effective it and of itself. Might as well just use healthy diet and exercise.

honestly, they do work at first. the problem is, they are not for long terms. the longer you hold on to it, the worse you'll feel.

If you want to lose weight and keep the pounds off focus on healthy eating, not dieting!

Learn about nutrition, portion control, eating whole grains with resistant starches, fruits and veggies, lots of green leaf veggies, healthy fats, low fat dairy or omit dairy completely, nuts and seeds, skip soda's artificial sweeteners and sugar and track your sodium intake. Stay active. Log your food and nutrition on Spark people as it helps you stay on track and learn about foods and nutrition.

When you improve your relationship with food you will start losing weight. Forget the diet pills, some can even harm your heart.

I don't know about "diet pills" exactly, but there is some research that shows CLA can help with burning fat, with few to no side effects. As for jumpstarting, in th first couple weeks most people will lose a lot, but it's mostly water weight from eating better and retaining less. I take quite a few supplements, mostly in the form of pills (a multi, C, D, omega-3, CLA, green tea extract) as well as N.O. Xplode before workouts which I think makes a huge difference for me. My workouts are now much more intense and I have more energy. It doesn't taste great, but I do think it is making a big difference in the amount of working out I do.

"Jumpstarting" by using pills/supplements etc. are actually generally bogus and can in fact be quite harmful.

Your best bet is to bite the bullet and do it the right way - making gradually changes to your nutrition and exercise, and accepting that this isn't going to happen over-night.

Those who lose weight quickly, gain it back just as quickly, and the yo-yo effect rears it's ugly head - and THAT is another health problem in itself.

Why do you feel the need that you have to start so quickly? If it is for a 'special occasion' then you can always use undergarments which do the trick nicely :-) AND learning something like Pilates will help immensely, too, because it strengthens your core muscles, and helps to improve your posture. That alone can drop a dress size, even if you haven't lost weight!

I'm gonna say no.

The idea of a "jumpstart" is overrated. The best jump start you can give yourself is just to start. Here you are at the beginning of December, just going in to the "holiday eating season" instead of putting it off till "New Years Resolutions" - that's a better jumpstart right there, than anything a pill could give you.

The pill pushers, are selling hopes and dreams. None of them have even been proven to be effective at helping a person keep weight off, which is really the whole point. Doesn't matter how soon or how fast you lose it, if it just comes back on, right?

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)
