caffeine is considered to be a diuretic. As long as you aren't adding calories, it can cause you to go to the bathroom more often, and cause a small weight loss. This is only temporary, and a one time shot. Even if you go back and retain those 3 lbs of water weight, and can re-lose it daily, it isn't new weight loss, just shifts in water weight. Not worth mentioning.
The idea of thermogenic dietary effects, or staying awake longer burning more calories may be true, but if you lose a lb, because you aren't sleeping enough, and your heart is racing.. are the benefits worth the risk?
Coffee as a weight loss method ( or caffeine ), isn't a great idea. Having a cup of decaf coffee, black would be a better option if you like the taste, but a cup of coffee will most likely not have much effect on you positive or negative. The entire diet matters, and focusing on one thing just eliminates the other 100 factors, which all need to be looked at.
