Ugh, same here. Am in the process of using up the last of my protein powders that have sucralose in them, and I gotta admit, I'm bummed. The powders without sucralose don't taste good. emoticon

I have a sugar addiction also. If I have one piece of candy, cake, or anything sweet that isn't natural, I can't stop myself. I just try to stay away from it as best I can.

I have come to the realization in the past couple of months that I am a sugar addict. And we are talking the direct parallel to a drug or alcohol type of addiction. I can't stop with just one, I eat half a batch of cookies.

I am on day 23 of no soda/sugar/artificial sweeteners and truthfully it is the hardest thing I have ever done. I have a family that refuses to eat the same way so for the first time in my life I am baking without licking the spoon, bowl and eating half the batch. I have found that the biggest craving blocker has been a handful of almonds or an apple with PB2. I am realizing that it is easy to go to salt as well and I am trying to do a good job of leaving salt behind as well.

I now have much more compassion on those who have overcome alcohol or drug addictions.

Thank you for putting it out there, Kate. I think I'm in the same boat, only today is Day #1. Sugar-type things are not one of those things I can "just have 1 of..." That has NEVER worked for me!

And yes, I had an issue back to childhood, but then I had a metabolism that BURNED everything I took in and then some. -- This "problem"/addiction did not affect my weight until after age 30 when LOTS of changes happened for me: body, work, children, exercise (lack thereof), stress, and so on. The fact is that I have a history of bad habits relating to sugar, but no consequences until now. I HAVE to stop this runaway train.

Thanks for sharing. I realized I had a problem with sugar when I hurried through a meal to have dessert. Than it was chocolate! I had to have it! Going to the store and made sure I bought it! Then I was hiding it. To make sure I had it! Then if I had sweets by themselves I would get really sick. I have been without sugar for 15 days. I no longer feel controlled by it. Trying now to come off of artificial sweeteners. Learned they can be a trigger. Learning how to eat normal again without sugar! Wow what a new life! Day by day!

Hi my name is Kate and I'm a sugar addict. I have been 20 days clean & sober. I know my addiction to sugar started when I was 4 or 5 yrs old. It was so bad I used to eat St. Josephs 81mg aspirins, like candy(not a lie). I use to delivery newspapers (remember those days) and any money I would make, I would ride my bike down to the country store to spend it all on bags & bags of junk food. When I went to visit my grandparents on weekends I would eat a whole box of sugary cereal in 2 days. I never found an off button. Even as an adult, when I developed GERD and I was having pain from eating too much sweets, I would still power through large blocks of chocolate bars and bags of candy.

I am glad to say, I have only needed my medicine 1 time this year and that was day one, but today I believe that through proper diet and portion control I have not needed my any and feel great. I equate my sugar addiction to that of an alcoholic. I truly believe I am that person who can not just have one (cookie (and I make some of the best), cupcake or candy bar) and be satisfied. Sure I'm early into my recovery phase but I feel stronger after acknowledging my addiction.

I thank you for listen, the great post already noted with the super helpful links, I absolutely love the SparkPeople site(I have learned so much everyday) and I will be a member for the rest of my life...a new daily habit. Good luck to everyone on your journey.

Wow! I am a sugar addict and reading Nancy Appleton's article is enough to scare the sweet tooth right out of me. Thanks for the heads up! I think I'll read her article first thing every morning to help keep me on track.

Thanks for the information about stevia. What about bread and cereal it doesn't bother your sugar cravings? I had puffed rice cereal with banana with a half a piece of toast with peanut butter and jam and I sure had a sugar high. Maybe too much carbs at the same time? Do not have trouble with oatmeal.

While Stevia is a far better choice than aspartame, saccharin and sucralose in terms of negative side effects. Stevia does affect you the same way in regards to sugar cravings as other artificial sweeteners like Aspartame. Stevia extract is not totally ‘natural’ since it’s derived from dried leaves using a water-extraction process, then is refined using ethanol, methanol, and crystallization. Stevia extract undergoes ultrafiltration to remove those alcohols.

Truvia is a chemically-processed sweetener, sugar substitute derived from the stevia plant. IMO its best to just avoid products like Truvia which has three ingredients: rebiana, erythritol and natural flavors. Consuming erythritol can causes a laxative effect because the chemical compounds in the sweetener are not completely absorbed into the digestive system. Erythritol can cause calcium and potassium loss through the urine that could damage kidney function over time. Truvia side effects may included bad breath, a metallic taste in the mouth, headaches, lethargy and even insomnia.

I have researched Study's that show artificial sweeteners including stevia elevates insulin levels for over two hours after eating. Which leads to being hungry all the time if your constantly consuming artificial sweeteners. Unless your able to maintain a health weight with sweeteners, It's best to stay away from all artificial sweeteners, including all-natural Stevia. Diet soda is just as bad as regular soda. Diet foods are just as bad as high glycemic sugary foods. Sugar in your coffee does the same thing as artificial sweeteners in your coffee. Yourr bodies hormonal response is not able to distinguish between sugar or any of the artificial sweeteners.

Regarding whole grains, breads and cereals, I limit myself to max of 0-3 servings per day or about 10 servings per week. By doing so I noticed I am loosing 5-6 pounds per week vs 2-3 pounds a week when consuming 6-7 servings of high carbs. This is no artificial sweeteners, no sugars, 4-7 servings per day of sugars from fruit only, 5-10 servings low carbs from vegetables, 5-10 servings of high good fat and high protien from meat, eggs, butter, olive and coconut oils. 2000-2500 calories tracked each day. Balance of nutrition is key.

No one mentioned artificial sweeteners. If your like me, artificial sweeteners will cause me to crave sugar and be always hungry more than by eating sugar itself. Eliminating all artificial sweeteners and sugar has eliminated sugar cravings and food binges for me.

I have had years of failed weight loss by eating healthy as can eliminating all sugars but not the artificial sweeteners causing me to be hungry all the time and crave sugar and comfort foods even more. Once I eliminated all artificial sweeteners from sugar free foods and drinks and cut out all the sugars from sweets I no longer crave sweets nor am hungry all the time. Then it is easy to choose diet high in fat, protein, vegetables and fruit.

With the elimination of cravings for sugars and not dealing with not being tricked into your body being hungry. I find myself hungry only when my body needs nutrition and naturally choose foods I want to eat and easy to avoid foods altogether that I should not eat. I also found balanced diet high in good fats(saturated fat from meat, olive & coconut oil) carbs mostly from vegetables and sugars from fruit has allowed myself to consume more calories,increase metabolism, loose weight faster.

Most importantly it has allowed my eating habits to permanently change and allow me to loose the weight and keep it off. Think of all sugar content you consume outside of whole fruits as empty calories. Once you get used without it your body gets all the nutrition it needs on much fewer calories. Be very careful how you choose your foods that claim to be healthy. Orange Juice(all 100% pasturized fruit juices ) &margarine(bad fat) are often though to be healthy choices but probably ones you want to avoid all together.

Buy herbs and spice and oil and vinegar and make your own. I grow some of my own herbs in the garden in summer and on the window sill in winter. I use olive oil and lemon pepper for a salad dressing sometimes and those spice combinations like Italian herb and Mediterranean are wonderful -- sugar and salt free. If you like that little bit or sour flavor, add a dash of vinegar :) As for the vegetables, I buy up what I can when it's on sale, blanch and freeze them to use later. I don't go so far as to make my own mayonnaise but it can be done with oil, eggs and lemon juice. But the important thing is to read the labels. I found that the major brand names (Dole, Delmonte, Green Giant etc) are the most likely to add sugar to their foods. The store brands often do not, interestingly enough.

I have discovered that the second I eat that first bite of sugar, I start craving more. And be warned that things that don't have any reason to have sugar included as an ingredient do have -- things like canned vegetables, canned soups, canned fruit. Yes, fruit has it's own sugars and it is often detrimental to diabetics, so you definitely don't need ADDED sugar. Start reading the labels of the stuff you eat for a rude awakening of what you are doing to yourself. And be VERY wary of those little banners on cans that say "no sugar added." That means that they would well have FAKE sugar which has been proven time and again to cause cancer. Life, and food, is full of pitfalls.

I get sick when I eat sugar like that. I get anxious and can't sleep. I think that's enough to stay away from it. I concentrate on eating whole foods.

Thanks for all the advice. I was doing a good job before the party; I didn't keep any sweets in the house and I looked to natural sweets to tame my sweet tooth, like fruits or peanut butter. But once I had all these sweets available to me I went crazy! I took your advice and I gave away the leftover cookies and candy to friends and coworkers. Hopefully that helps. Out of sight...out of mind! The struggle with sugar has always been with me. Sugar is so addicting. I will start fresh today though and keep on with the struggle. Thanks guys!

I understand your frustration. I gave up Mtn. Dew (10 to 16 ounces per day). That was in January 2011. I just told myself that after that last 6 pack, I wasn't going to buy anymore and I didn't, but I drank the 7.5 ounce cans of coke. I did that until a few months ago. I thought I was dehydrated so I quit buying the coke and got Gatorade. I still have a half of the big thing of Gatorade in the refrigerator though. I have been drinking water and milk (1% and low fat chocolate milk).

In terms of sweets, I just don't keep it around. If I want something, I buy one of the single servings. The people that know me fairly well, know that I am trying to avoid sweets. They are good about it too. Of course, there have been times when they knew they were going to have cupcakes or something similar. They'd tell me, but they would ask if I would try one (or have a bite of the cake, etc.). I would eat the cupcake. I'd just make that my special treat for the week. I do enjoy having something sweet, but I just tell myself that I don't need it.

I was a big sugar addict.
I WAS because I don't eat anymore sugary foods.
I still AM because I still crave it.
Hopefully this will help you.
A. HOW I got rid of the addiction:
1 I decided that TODAY (not tomorrow) emoticon is the first day of my lifetime sugar free diet
2 I got rid emoticon of all the sweets and all sugary foods from my house and from my office
3 I stopped emoticon buying them altogether
4 I found and made/bought substitutes:
bananas emoticon , honey, molasses, homemade apple juice emoticon , homemade fruit marmalade (no sugar added) emoticon
dried figs or dried plums, etc

B. WHY it worked for me:
1 I am strong willed emoticon
2 When I am highly motivated emoticon or I really really want something done emoticon , I stick to the plan emoticon
3 I always have on me a sweet and good sugar substitute (from those listed above)
4 I'm not more catholic than the pope emoticon :
if the urge for sugar is SUPER SUPER SUPER strong emoticon emoticon ,
I have 10 grams of creamy honey or some dried figs (very sweet)

So Halloween came and went but left all of the leftover candy! And people have been bringing them in to work so I've fallen victim the last couple days to the bite size delicacies. But back on track, the candy's all gone around here! Had my oatmeal and flaxseed breakfast, having a turkey sandwich with mixed veggies for lunch and planning to get some strength training in when I get home from work today! Feels like I'm starting over, but glad to know that I'm keeping it under control! Didn't like the way my pants that were getting slim fit this morning but that made me determined to get them loose again! Thanks SP Family!

Get the big packages out of your house. Take them to work and leave them in the break room.

If you feel like you really want some Oreos and you can fit them into your calorie range, go to the bodega and buy a single-serving pack. Take the time to savor every bite of them and really enjoy the treat. Just don't buy the giant bags and keep them at home.

You don't have to eat the whole thing.

Also you might want to know that salt addiction may cause food cravings...If you crave sweets, it could be a sign that you consume too much salt.

Eating too much salt boosts the production insulin, the hormone that tells the body to store fat. The more insulin you have, the more fat is stored and the more weight you gain. So start tracking your sodium, you might be surprised!

I think I have a bit of a problem. I've always had a sweet tooth but never considered it a major problem...until today. I know that sweets are my weakness, so I don't keep them in my house. I have been doing very well with not eating any extra sweets or desserts. I haven't felt deprived and I haven't had any cravings at all, for the past month. Then, I threw a Halloween party and we ate cupcakes, cookies, smores, and lots of chocolate candy! I felt like I died and went to heaven. Ever since then I have been chowing down on chocolates and Oreos. I can't just have one or even a few. I eat sweets until I am stuffed...Not good! I can't seem to find the right balance. Any suggestions? How do you fight the sugar addiction?
