Also companies fill packages by weight, not by volume and then convert the weight measurement into a volume for serving sizes. Sometimes the conversion is a little more approximate than we would like.

When I have noticed what appears to be misinformation on a label, I have contacted them to query it. In 2 instances they altered the label.

One thing to check is are you using a real cup measure? Some people use a cup that actually holds a fair bit more.

Of course companies can mislabel food products. AND it could be accidental or, I'm told, intentional in some cases. Sad, but true.

That's why I prefer to stay natural; God is consistently accurate. ;)

This is why you have to be careful with volume measurements. How you cook and how you measure can yield very different results. If the package says it makes 5 servings, I assume that is correct. My volume and the company's volume may differ though. So if it makes 5 servings I would divide it out into 5 and figure that 1/5 would be the 160 cals stated.
And rice is roughly in the 160 range for a 1/4 cup dry serving depending on kind. The last time I made rice it was with lentils in the slow cooker and a cup of that mix turned into four cups cooked. And rice always at least doubles. So it is not that far off for a cup, especially if you fluff before you measure and do not pack as much as you can in the cup.

-google first. ask questions later.

hello,
I checked the nutritional information for a serving of a rice mix and it said serving size 1cup, 160 calories, makes 5 servings. well there was only 2 1/2 cups total once it was cooked. and a whole cup of rice has far more than 160 calories, that is about what half a cup has, isn't it?
I am seriously thinking the company made a mistake. well just to be safe I tracked it as 1/2 cup serving.
