I love turkey, but I have gotten spoiled with fresh farm raised turkey. The frozen turkeys do not even taste like turkey to me

goal is to be able to walk again

If you have Dillons or Kroger in your area, they now have their own organic brand called Simple Truth and my local store has had Simple Truth turkeys in the past. I'm hoping they have them again for Thanksgiving. If not, my local Natural Grocers store as well as a locally owned health food store carry Mary's turkeys - they are all natural with none of that nasty junk injected in them. Otherwise, your best bet would be to find a local farmer and get one from them.

Do you have a farmers market or an Amish market?

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

MICHELLEXXXX: In the one-horse town in which I live, we occasionally have anywhere from a half-dozen to 20 wild turkeys come through our yard. In the old days before some neighbors with several children moved in, we almost daily got two different flocks, sometimes over 30 turkeys combined. However, I did not really see any toms; just a lot of adult hens and young ones. I am guessing that domesticated turkeys would be more tender than the wild, although my nephew fixed a smoked wild turkey which was rather tasty.

No Whole Foods around here, unfortunately. No Trader Joe's either.

There is such a thing, but whether you're willing to pay $2/lb versus $0.99/lb that butterball sells for is another matter. For me, the extra cost is worth it because the turkey (and all other poultry really) that I get from the farm stand (more of a farmer-run grocery store) actually tastes like turkey or chicken or pork. We did a blind taste test with breast meat from the farm stand turkey and some from a butterball and the difference was immediately recognizable. When I'm only buying 2 turkeys a year, it's worth it for a fresh, good tasting bird.

I thought most of them were clean, except perhaps those like "butterball" with injected mystery ingredients

guess I'd better read labels.

I used to buy the "utility" type (bit of ripped skin or missing giblets) way back; not even sure if they are still available

The "from the farmer" option is great, if you have the availability

Is that true even if you buy a fresh turkey from a farm? I never really thought about it but it is interesting that you did...

I don't know how healthy the 10 pound turkey I had my wife buy me today is, but I am not concerned about the "injection solution," since I do on occasion eat things like bacon, sugar-based desserts, etc. Solution Ingredients: turkey broth, salt, sodium phosphate, sugar, flavoring.

Don't get me wrong. I am 100% in favor of people eating "clean," organic turkeys. It is nigh impossible for me to find them anywhere remotely close, however. So I shall occasionally eat the kind I mentioned above and hope for the best.

The local farmers around here sell naturally raised hormone free turkeys.

I tend to agree with the saying, pay more now or pay more later. (with your health and for your health care).

Can anyone recommend a brand of turkey that does NOT have added sugar or MSG (hint - the words "natural flavoring" usually means hidden MSG). I can't seem to find such an animal around here without taking out a second mortgage on my home!
