I am in total agreement with Exotec: please see you doctor and get bloodwork done including a full vitamin / mineral / electrolyte panel.

It is entirely possible that your craving for salt truly is because your body is low in sodium. There actually is a condition where your body doesn't produce enough of the hormone that regulates the excretion of sodium vs. potassium, which results in not having enough sodium. An interesting symptom of this is that your body has a very difficult time dealing with stress.

Please make sure you rule out a medical / physical cause for this before "treating" it as an emotional issue.

Consult with your PCP. Perhaps you actually need salt. What a thought!
See if you can get a good panel which will list your mineral profile. Some of us just need supplementation if we don't get a good distribution in our foods.

Cravings in general are pretty much common to any diet, weight-loss or otherwise. As others have said, identifying the sources of those cravings are key. They can be 'emotional' or truly nutritional.

It would do your health good to find out which you're responding to.

Sometimes, when you're doing a emoticon job, you'll encounter food cravings that you're not normally used to as this is what happens to me. I identify them as such and I either drink emoticon or chew gum to get rid of the temptation as this suppresses it until I'm really to eat the right things!

Apart from the comments from Becky, if being upset is frequent and ongoing, and you need a wee bit more help, talk with your Dr and ask for a referral to a Therapist. They are marvelous at helping you to put things into proper perspective, and also giving you the emotional tools to deal with stressful situations.

Analyze why you are upset.
Is there a way to decrease the times you are upset.
Do you need to have a crucial conversation with a family member, co-worker, etc?
Do you feel upset because of organizational issues, dead lines, procrastination?

Can you "fix" or deal with what is upsetting so you feel better.

Other things include relaxation techniques: yoga, medication, prayer, journaling, etc

Hey All:

I've been eating healthy for some time but I'm still getting the most insane food cravings - mostly for salt when I'm upset. Do you guys have any tips for managing cravings and stress besides exercise?
