I love my fitbit. And I think it's a little more accurate for calorie calculations. If you told sparkpeople that you want to lose 1 pound per week, it will calculate what you need to lose, which should be somewhere around 1500 calories per day. If your BMR is 1900, that only includes the minimum your body needs to run. If you do any more than sitting in bed, your body will burn more than that. Adding exercise on top of that will increase what your body burns. Sparkpeople's reccommendation does seem reasonable.

Current status-It shows my basic metabolic at just over 1900 calories. I am eating between 1300-1600 depending on the day, but I try to keep it just under 1400. I haven't started exercising yet, but plan to start walking this weekend.

iamlovedbyyou-do you like the fitbit? Would you recommend that?

The Spark range is quite accurate if you enter your information in accurately. Take time to evaluate how active you are, how often you actually exercise, and it should give you the proper range.

I have a fitbit which gives me a daily recommendation and it's usually right in the center of what sparkpeople tells me.

If you enter in your estimated weekly caloric burn and your goal, spark will automatically set your nutritional range so you will reach your goal. What I do, honestly, is track my daily deficits (there's a report)- recognize that just because you *should* lose 1 lb because you had a 3500 cal deficit does not necessarily mean it'll show on the scale (immediately/ever), but I find it to be a very helpful way for me to stay on goal.

Current goal:
- 32 by end of April.

Next goals: -
39 total by end of May.
-46 by end of June.

Healthy choices and actions have positive impacts, even if the scale doesn't move!

What are the SP recommendations for you, and how are you determining the 500 "below"? 500 calories below whatever you are currently burning between basal metabolism and your normal daily activity (including exercise) should result in about a pound loss per week, yes. (On average, over time.) And that's quite realistic for most people. On the other hand if you're cutting off 500 from your BMR without factoring the exercise you are doing, you might be trying for too much; and if you're cutting off 500 from what you're eating now, then that might wind up either too high or too low depending on if you're eating at an excess or deficit already.

So what's your current status?

I am trying to figure out how to lose weight, while exercising, BUT I want to be sure to cut calories so I'm losing 1 pound a week just on diet. Is this possible? I figure if I cut calories by 500 per day below (which falls in the bottom of the sp recommendations) that this might do the trick. Anyone do this? Or have any thoughts? I'm thinking a steady one pound per week until I hit goal weight is plenty. That would get me to my goal in about 8 months or so.
