I liked the taste in my tea, but couldn't tolerate it.

I recently discovered coconut sap sugar, which is low-glycemic, 30 calories per serving, and pretty tasty. (Although also pretty expensive!)

From everything I've read, sugar subs like aspartame and saccharin create the same "craving" and insulin issues as real sugar, but apparently stevia and coconut sugar do not.

The reason why I wanted to try it (as opposed to other, artificial sweeteners) is that it's natural. But I really dislike the taste so far and I keep wondering if it's useful at all. This little bottle of powder was very expensive.

So I'm considering using it for baking (like, cookies or cake) but I have my strong doubts as to whether I would like the taste, then.

I don't really care about calories but I do care about the way 'real' sugar makes me crave more, and more, and more.

This is a bit off topic but I grew a stevia plant in my herb garden but couldn't figure out how to use it. I have Truvia on hand and occasionally sprinkle a bit on somethings but I also use a wee bit of organic Florida crystals (sugar) from time to time.

I am retired ~ I no longer have an excuse to not take care of myself.

Not much weaning off to do with the fruit and stevia... right now it is a half tsp every two weeks...the thing about stevia that no one is noticing is it is not artificial... it is not a chemical mix of toxins like other sugars

I have found that you either like Stevia or you don't. I think it's nasty, my daughter likes it. I prefer Sweet N Low or Splenda if I'm using an artificial sweetener.

There are a lot of different products out there so I'm sure you will find that you like.
Something to think about is that real sweeteners like sugar or honey etc are not evil if used in moderation.

For baking I like half sugar half Splenda. For beverages I like Sweet N Low.

And no, Stevia does not cause infertility nor is it an effective method of birth control! You can find a study to support anything you want but a good rule of thumb is moderation in all things.

I stopped using it after my daughter told me it is used as birth contol in Africa causing infertility!

Fruit needs no additional sweetener! My humble advice is to try to wean yourself off of stevia and sugar when eating fruit.

I use it on fruit.. occassionally cooking grapefruit.... small amount... I don't use it with coffee or tea..

I don't, I tried it and I don't like it.

It doesn't hit the spot like a little real sugar does. So I went back to using real sugar in small amounts

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

I find that even small amounts of stevia tastes awful and bitter to me. Something to look out for....packets of sugar alternatives should list all of their ingredients, a lot of them have dextrose (a type of sugar) in them to make them more bulky.

The thing about stevia is that it messes with my sugar levels. I can not eat it. If you have low blood sugar as I do be careful with this sugar substitute. It could mess you up. emoticon

Sugar amount Equivalent Stevia powdered extract Equivalent Stevia liquid
1 cup 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon
1 tablespoon 1/4 teaspoon 6 to 9 drops
1 teaspoon A pinch to 1/16 teaspoon 2 to 4 drops

Stevia has no calories, a zero glycemic index (meaning it has no carbs), no artificial ingredients, and no effect on blood sugar.....so it doesn't stimulate appetite.

IT IS MUCH SWEETER THAN OTHER PRODUCTS SO JUST A SMALL AMOUNT IS GENERALLY GOOD.

I'm trying to find out if Stevia could be of use for me. I stopped eating sugar a few weeks ago and thought that in the few occasions when I want a treat, I could make a hot cocoa with it or bake something with it instead of sugar.
Tried the cocoa - that was awful! Is that just me not liking the taste?

So what do you use Stevia for and how do you use it?
