SUSAN_FOSTER I have the same problem and have to plan when you are going to drink. I have been told that it will regulate itself, but so far not, I spend most of the time running to the toilet..........guess I am getting some exercise up and down the stairs

"water helps make the body work"

But drinking MORE than you need does NOT help the body work Better. It's very difficult to not get enough, you have a built in mechanism to tell you to get more (thirst). And it is NOT TRUE that "most people are dehydrated" even though you'll hear that myth fairly often.

Being up 2 to 3 times at night to pee would make me lean towards too much. Are you forcing yourself to drink that much?

It is possible to drink too much water. A recommendation has been made to drink 1/2 your weight, i.e., 150 lbs would equate to 75 oz. water. I've always heard that a good judge of whether you are drinking too much water is the urine test (too pale=too much water; too dark=too little water).

When we urinate we secrete vitamins (e.g.,water soluble vitamins), and that is most likely true with minerals as well. Another good reason to eat healthy and balanced meals, to replenish nutrients we lose.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.

Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

I drink a lot of water too, at least as much as you mentioned, maybe more. I have for years, and it doesn't seem to harm me. I don't drink many other liquids, except coffee in the morning and an occasional cup of tea; no pop, for instance.

I do think it is partly habit--I too have a glass of water by my beside. I'm just used to the cool feel and taste of water in my mouth.

But, especially if this is fairly new, it may be something to check out.

You get up and drink 3 glasses of water before breakfast. Is there any particularly reason for this? Are you excessively thirsty? You also sip water re a dry mouth, during the night. There are a few things going through my mind!

1. Do you sleep with your mouth open? (dry mouth and perhaps increased thirst)

2. Are you on medications which can cause you to feel thirsty?

3. Do you have Diabetes, or been checked for it?

4. Do you have dry eyes as well? (combined with dry mouth can indicate a certain medical condition.)

5. Do you eat a lot of fairly dry food, and/or consume a fair bit of sodium (added yourself or processed foods.) If you do consume a lot of processed foods, cutting back on them should decrease the thirst a bit.

6. What colour is your urine? Ideally it should be pale yellow - if clear, it may be that you are drinking too much and can afford to cut back a little.

7. When you are next with your Dr, it wouldn't hurt to discuss this with him/her, taking the above into consideration.

Thanks Gimpster!

Well within a normal range too much is hard to do, unless there is something medically going on or you drink an exceptionally large amount in a short period of time as Jen said.

Thank you for the feedback.

This is my normal routine:
upon rising - drink 3 glasses
between breakfast & lunch - drink 3 glasses
between lunch & dinner - drink 3 glasses.

I'll also have a tall 16 oz glass of tea (herb sweetened with stevia leaf)

After dinner, usually during hot tub, another glass or two,
but that probably compensates for the water loss (sweat).

During the night, I usually get up to pee 2 or 3 times
and will have a sip or two of water because my mouth is dry.

Actually YES it is possible although not easily done and for most people isn't a concern but sometimes if you are not eating much too much water can cause an electrolyte imbalance. I am getting out of my depth here at tad as far as expertise but... the body need certain nutrients to function properly and too little can cause serious immediate health risks. For example, too little potassium can affect heart function and rhythms and at the extreme end of the scale can cause things like a heart attack.

Again I know little about electrolytes (as I write Im realizing the ? I have and could probably do a little reading myself on the subject) as I'm not a doctor but I believe water and sodium go hand in hand. Too little sodium and too much water is a problem. I was once hospitalized for this very problem.... Now don't fret, there were many many reasons why I was in that state relating to a pre- existing medical condition so this is RARE.

For better knowledge than I have do a search on electrolytes and see what you find. I'm not gonna list any because I haven't read up on it in a while.

Good luck and whatever happens drink up..... and enjoy!!

Hi Cathy

It is possible to drink too much if it's a large amount over a very short period of time. Your intake sounds fine. The only cause for concern is if you're drinking a lot because of excessive thirst. That can be a sign of a medical issue, so it's something to mention to your doctor.

Hope that helps,

How funny!
That's the same article I just read this morning . . .
and the spark for my question.

Granted, water is important - vital - to our health (and weight loss)
but is too much water harmful?
and what is too much???

It's funny you asked that question. I just read an article yesterday on the site that goes into great detail on water and it's importance. Check it out at: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=54

Hope it Helps,

I drink a lot of water . . . . minimum of 10 glasses each day . . .
often 12 or more.

Is it possible to drink too much water? possibly depleting minerals or whatever???
