I have a sweet tooth as well and here are some of my go to snacks and tips:
1.) 85% Dark Chocolate (Moser Roth brand purchased at Aldi, 1.89 for 5 bars) I freeze them so I can't eat too much at once.
2.) I cook a batch of cut up apples in cinnamon at the beginning of the week, I love cooked apples!
3.) I love peanut butter and Jelly, but try not to eat bread very often so I slice a banana down the middle long ways. I give the other half to my daughter or son and I put one tbsp of peanut butter and one tbsp or less all fruit spread. You can even melt half of a dark chocolate bar and drizzle it over the banana and peanut butter YUM!
4.) Sodelicious brand vanilla coconut milk heated with unsweetened cocoa powder and honey, whisking it often. Drink it as cocoa or you can cool and put into Popsicle molds to make yummy "fudge" pops.
5.) Chew gum or better yet, brush your teeth after you eat your sweet treat to keep from going for extra!

I can relate to a lot of this. I also have a sweet tooth and when I take the first bite, my "common sense" takes leave. I never stop with just 1 piece of anything.
I have found that it is just better if I do not buy the stuff and have it here to tempt me. When it is in the house....I will EAT every bit of it.
I am a "all or nothing" person. When I quit smoking 2 packs a day in 2003 after smoking for 40+ years, I could not have 1 in my possession. I could be around other people smoking but I could not "own" 1 or I would have smoked it. WEIRD, I know.

What has helped me is to stop buying stuff. If I want it I have to make it. So if I want cookies, I make them. Same with cakes, candy etc.
What I have found is that I either don't want to make it or if I make a batch, I freeze most of it in single serving portions and am able to just eat a little. I also make half and quarter batches of things,
If it is something I can't make, then I buy a single serving, split it into 2 or more servings if I can and enjoy one portion. This way I can have a serving of Oreos or a fig bar without having a big package in the house.

I was doing well for a while and then I ate one of the Skinny Cow Devine Filled Chocolates - Carmel and now I can't stop thinking about them. I buy the boxes of 6 and they are gone within a day or two. I tell myself I won't buy any next time I go to the store and then I'm there and I convince myself that I will only have one a day or every few days and so I buy it and next thing I know I've eaten a whole 780 empty calories.

SHOTTZY: It is my opinion that the vast majority of people I know have a "sweet tooth." The key, of course, is moderation. Yes, there are fruits (and vegetables) that have a lot of sugar in them, such as pineapple, mango, apples, and clementines. However, for many of us, we still occasionally want to eat a doughnut, a chocolate candy bar, a piece of pumpkin pie, etc. Allowing ourselves the occasional sugar-treat, in my opinion, often does more good than harm. I'm not a professional nutritionist, however. Just the same, I know dozens of people who are in their 70's. 80's, and 90's who still allow themselves some sugar-based desserts.
Ah, yes, moderation in all things. Even in strict dieting.

I too have a wicked sweet tooth... foods that other's comment on as being too sweet or making their teeth ache are the ones that I love, and have no issues downing in vast quantities.
I agree with BUBBLEJ1 that chowing down fruit and chewing sugar-free gum can help, and that yes, giving up the sweets takes huge willpower. Fruit isn't the same but if the willpower is there, the body will adjust.
Keep sweets out of your house; if you don't have them they won't be on hand when you start to crave them. That includes baking materials like marshmallows, chipits and sweetened coconut.
As for fruit, go for the in-season stuff as much as possible as these items will be the sweetest. If you can find really nice grapes, freeze them and snack on them while frozen. Your jaw gets a better workout (which I find helps me) and the fact that they're frozen slows you down. I found a type of really sweet, very crisp apple this fall called "Honey Crisp" from a local orchard that are to DIE for - these actually nip my sweet tooth in the bud. Small navel oranges can be heaven, as can a nice ripe kiwi, pear or mango. My go-to in the summer is nectarines. When berries are in season in the spring these can of course be a life saver :)
When my sweet tooth really starts to get on my nerves I indulge in a teaspoon of honey or molasses depending on the "sweet" that I'm looking for. This won't kill your calorie intake and if you eat it slowly and savor the flavor it can do wonders for your sanity.

I have a major sweet tooth and this week I've been trying to go without sugary snacks and dessert. It's not for everyone, but it is working for me. I've been replacing my sweet snacks with fruit and I've been chewing sugarfree gum.
Giving up sweets takes will power though, I'm not going to lie. And fruit is not the same as chocolate! For me I needed to give it up for a while, then will try to reintroduce some desserts in moderation.
There are no shortcuts. No magic bullets. No secret spells. What works is hard work, dedication, and a daily dose of chocolate.
