Well... it's certainly an option to do things that way.
*I* believe that aspartame, which is the sweetener used in nearly every diet soda, is far worse for you than real sugar (even HFCS). If you're going to make another healthy step at some point, to no soda at all, switching to diet now only to get used to it and have to go through another deprivation later on simply doesn't make good sense, to me.
I drink sucralose-sweetened drinks (which is the only sweetener our endocrinologist permits us, including "natural" sugar), such as PowerAde Zero, Mio, and occasionally Kool-Aid (or equivalent) made with sucralose. I've also found a good juice which I can mix with plain seltzer water, and it seems like soda to me: Ocean Spray Diet (not "light"). I drink a LOT of water, too. The combination of sweet with fizziness may help you break your cravings for soda.

A diet soda or two per day isn't going to hurt you. It may even be really helpful for your weight loss efforts (so long as you don't replace the calories you were getting in the regular sodas with other foods) and I know we can all agree that even a small reduction in weight can be very beneficial.
I agree - I quit diet soda and think its gross but I would heartily support drinking it over regular soda. 5 sodas = 700 calories/day x 7 days = 4900 calories. That is 1.4 pounds per week lost from your diet if you cut it!

I think you're going to get a variety of answers on this one! I will say that I think sometimes people forget that they, themselves, didn't make the switch from other beverages to just water, overnight. IMO, a couple diet sodas are better than 5 regular sodas. Perhaps after you've gotten used to not having all the sugar, you can then switch out the diet soda for water. Nothing says you can't flavor your water, either. I like to squeeze a little lemon or lime into mine sometimes.
