There are two very different types of coconut "milk." There's the thick, high-fat kind usually sold in a can; it's made from boiling coconut flesh and concentrating the liquid until it's mostly fat, possibly with added sugar (sometimes more sugar than water.) The other kind, sold refrigerated in cartons that look like milk cartons, is thinner and lower in calories.

Neither one has any specific nutritional advantages, especially compared to low-fat dairy milk. But IMO the refrigerated kind makes a great replacemnt for the canned kind in cooked dishes.

This SP article will give you the facts on the different alternative milks, including coconut milk.

Coconut milk can be high fat, and filled with added sugar. Plus there is only minimal protein. I do not consider it to be a beverage with health benefits. Use sparingly as a condiment for adding flavor to some of your recipes---it should not be your go-to milk beverage.

It's much higher calorie than milk so you need to watch your portion sizes. 1 cup of coconut milk is 240 calories whereas a cup of skim milk is about 90.

I don't believe it is a magic, superfood personally. It is high in fat so it should be used sparingly.

You don't have to eat the whole thing.

I hope someone can give you an answer because I find this confusing too. I know people who use coconut milk almost exclusively exclaiming over its health benefits. But from what I have read it has the bad fats we are supposed to avoid. I am using some for the first time today. I bought the low fat version which I'm not sure if it is a better choice or not. I'm making a crock pot vegetarian meal. Jamaican red bean stew. It smells amazing so I hope it isn't too unhealthy. I was just planning to enter it in the recipe calculator to see how many calories etc. it has.

Hi..I have been using Coconut Milk instead of dairy milk because I read so much about how good it is for you. Does anyone know if this hype or really a better option? Thanks
