If you are wanting to lose 1lb a week you should be balancing your diet and exercise to be roughly 500 calories below your resting metabolic rate (which varies depending on age, gender, weight and height). 1lb is equivalent to 3500 calories.
What you DONT want to do is increase your exercise without adjusting your food intake or your body will go into starvation mode and save every little bit of fat it can or start using your muscles for energy.
