I go by how hungry I am, and what I feel like eating later in the day.
If I'm still really hungry, then I assume that my body needs some extra calories for some reason, so I eat a normal dinner and even my usual snacks if I'm still hungry for them.
If I'm not very hungry, then I might just nibble on a balance of veggies / protein / nuts until I'm satisfied.
In my world, my body signals trump the "calorie range" in importance every time, so I just don't worry about it when I have the occasional day where I'm hungry enough to exceed the ranges.
