I went to a small private college, and I understand your struggle. We only had 200 people living on campus, but I always managed to find a way to eat (somewhat) healthy.

Thanks so much everyone! I do go to a small private college (1400 students maybe?) so I'm sure I could get some nutritional info. I'll have to look into it.

Also, I try to start with vegetables too. Usually I can eat less of the high calorie stuff. It does suck when the constant dessert temptations and friends haggling you to eat is there.

But definitely thanks for the tips and ideas!

Nutritional info is usually available online. Before I go to the cafeteria, I make a game plan.. I look up the menu and decide what I will have. I track everything before so I don't have to stress out about it.

They have the nutrition info. Just ask for it. It might take a day or two for the question to reach the right person, but they are required to have the information, and most college/university food service directors are VERY conscious of the nutritional aspects of what they're serving. It's a big deal for them, and they'll probably be really excited to tell you what they've been working on. They don't provide it because they think students don't care, but it's there!

I had an advantage in college that I worked in the dining hall, so I got the inside scoop from the chefs on how things were prepared and what was actually GOOD. Once I wised up about my nutrition more, I would automatically START with veggies on my plate instead of starting with the grain or protein. That way I would fill more of my plate with the veggies instead of the classic "putting it on where it will fit" and short-changing yourself of them.

The hard part was the always available sweets and desserts and finding another option or really limiting my portion to the correct size (or slightly smaller) while my friends had some as well.

How accessible are the dining room managers? Would you be able to talk to one of them and see if they have nutrition info available? I went to a small private school (2800 students), so it was a pretty personal environment.

Salad bar! When I was in college I tried to either have a small salad with lunch and dinner, or have a big salad AS lunch or dinner, then eat something else the other meal depending on what looked appealing. I was a vegetarian at the time, so that greatly limited my options.

Realize that it's an estimate, and that's likely all it ever will be. But, an estimate is better than nothing at all.

Enter it with the cell phone app on the spot. Or, take a cell pic so that you have a reference when you enter it later. Best guess.

Date one of the cooks?

There is no bad food, only bad cooks.

My cafeteria game-plan:
all whole unprocessed (no grains)
any sauces on the side
2/3 plate covered w vegs'

Then guesstimate amounts and enter each tem into one of the many nutrient calculators on the web.

For all the college students out there, how do you keep your calories tracked? At my college, they don't provide nutritional info and I can't measure my food. So it really doesn't motivate me to track calories if I'm not even sure I'm in the ball park. Any tips an pointers? I try to steer towards vegetables and chicken and fish, but other things creep up. So what do you do?
