I definitely am with the "prefer to get my vitamins from food" crowd, although I am taking some separate supplements (B complex, B12, and D) right now as instructed by my doctor. Other than D, I was hitting 100% or more every day from food, but I have some absorbtion issues thanks to the colon cancer, so the doc wants me taking supplements, too.

As for the iron, I was severely low and was given an iron infusion on January 2. Since then I have not only maintained by iron levels, but have increased them strictly with foods. My "stand-by" items are blackstrap molasses (which I use as a sweetener in plain yogurt or hot chocolate; and use as a base for many sauces) and a dutch-processed cocoa powder (15% RDA per Tbsp) that I mix in with my plain yogurt, make hot chocolate from with heated skim milk, and use as a rub on meats. Although the calcium in the yogurt and the skim milk is supposed to inhibit the absorbtion of the non-heme iron, it doesn't seem to be causing any issues for me.

You might want to start tracking iron and the other vitamins / minerals that you are concerned with and see what you are actually getting every day. Double-check what food entries you are using, since most don't include all of the vitamin data, and add your own entries with complete data (you can usually find the info on nutritiondata.self.com) so that you have a more accurate look at it. You might just find that you don't need supplementation at all.

I am not satisfied because I don't like all of the ingredients in them. I want something more natural and was considering switching to an organic vitamin, or taking all of my vitamins separately.

Do you take vitamins with some food on your stomach? If you are taking vitamins that have a higher iron content, ferrous sulfate or ferrous furmate on an empty stomach can definately cause GI upset.

As always, when starting a multivitamin supplement, it is always best to consult your physician, as they can help determine what would be causing your defficiency. There could be a myriad of non nutritional causes.

It could also be the way you are eating. Vitamin C helps iron absorption, as well as consuming your non-heme (non meat) iron with heme iron (meat iron). Things that hurt iron absorption are:

Calcium, you still need 1000mg-1300mg/day just, just figure out how to separate it.

Tannins: Found mainly in coffee and tea. Consuming these with your meal can greatly inhibit iron absorption.

Phylates: These are usually found in sodas, and can inhibit iron absorption.

Diets very high in fiber and regular use of antiacids and other heartburn medications as well. Think zantac/prilosec et.al

If I were you, I would sit down with a RD and get things worked out as well.

When selecting a supplement, you should always try to pick one that is USP verified. Naturemade comes to mind. Basically USP verification means they follow good manufacturing practices, and the amounts that are claimed to be in the supplement are actually the amounts you get in the supplement.

The only vitamins I can stomach are the gummy ones. I like that they taste good and don't upset my stomach like the traditional vitamins did.

I should have been more clear. Iron has always been a problem for me, and I was anemic for years. I have gotten that taken care of, but to prevent it from happening again, I take a multivitamin with iron in it. I was just wondering what brand others took because I am not 100% satisfied with the one I use.

I assume you are indicating that your doctor has run tests and you are experiencing low iron stores, anemia??

If so, talk to your doctor about what type and amount of supplement to take.
Yes, multivitamin-mineral supplement might be right, like a one-a-day, centrum, or similar store brand. However you doctor may determine that you need something else.

I use Cardio Tabs, a daily multivitamin that includes Vitamin D.

I have the same issues with low iron and although my yearly blood test last year showed it as normal (finally), this year, it's back. I'm going to try getting more iron in my diet, but might, once again, have to resort to iron supplements. I'm almost 55 (this week) so I suspect this is a much more common problem at my age.

I use a regular multivitamin (Nature Made I think is the brand) with iron and calcium. I'd rather get my vitamins from foods, but know I probably don't, so I started taking one. But I usually only remember to take it every other day or maybe once every three?

Do you use multivitamins? I am trying to figure out if it is beneficial to add a multivitamin, or if I should buy vitamin packs from GNC. I have had issues with iron, and no matter how much I eat, I cannot keep my iron normal without the use of supplements. Right now I take one-a-day for women under 55, but I am 22 and I want something that fits me more. What kind do you use?
