I quit cold turkey. I am diabetic, and hate the taste of diet, so I drank about 4 liters of regular Pepsi every day. I just quit one day, and drank only plain water. People will try to suggest substitutes, but that just makes it harder to get past it. After 3-4 weeks of plain water, that is what you will crave. then you can add back in coffee, and tea, but remember.. what you may have craved was the sugar, so drinking sweet tea, will just make you want a pop. If it is just the caffeine, decaf may be fine. Find out which, or if both, are an issue.

I was able to quit drinking soda (my favorite by far was diet Dr. Thunder -- similar to Dr Pepper), of which I drank as many as two to three 2-liter bottles a week. I just decided to quit drinking it cold turkey. I decided I would quit drinking so much aspartame, and I was not certain all that carbonation was good for my body. I have not had any for almost a year.

As far as junk food goes, currently I am on a no junk-food diet, until I lose 18 or so pounds and get back to maintenance. But eventually I will occasionally include junk food in my diet, just sparingly and in moderation, as much as possible.

Some people have the will-power to basically give up eating any junk food. Many of us, however, have found that an occasional order of greasy fries or deep-fat fried chicken or a Dairy Queen Blizzard is acceptable in our overall maintenance plan. If we can remember and practice moderation in all things, there may be a place for junk food in our overall healthy diets.

I am not really a big soda drinker in general but I really enjoy a coke now and then. I know in times when I feel like one I should opt for diet but I can't stand the taste of it. it seems like cold turkey is the best option from now on. besides this article talks about what happens to your body within an hour.. and has kind of put me off soda http://www.healyourlife.com/blogs/louise-hay-blog/love-your-body

I did not quit soda but have cut back a lot. What helped me was to switch the type I drank to one that I did not like the taste of as well. This still helped with some of the soda craving but helped me limit the amount.
As for junk food that is still hard for me. I think balanced meals help and not allowing yourself to get too hungry. If you can work on moderation maybe set a side 200 calories for a treat to fill your craving. Also learn to make healthier versions of your favorites.

I'm a supporter of the cold turkey method. Just stop. Aleve for the first week of headaches and then you're free.

I've been off sodas for over three months now. I don't regret it in the least. I was an atleast three diet sodas a day kinda person before.

I felt like crap for a bit and then I started to feel better. It also seemed to help me lose weight easier. I had stalled and when I gave up the soda and caffeine I started losing again.

I don't drink anything other than water and the occasional cup of unsweetened tea maybe once a month.

Just my 2 cents! Best of Luck!

What I've done is buy a seltzer machine (sodastream) and make my own 'soda' with an ounce or two of fruit juice in a glass of seltzer. Mostly now I just drink the bubbly water plain. Either way, it's far less sugar than coke/mtn dew/etc. Now the commercial stuff all tastes like chemical swill, to the point where I can't fathom how anyone actually likes it.

For every soda you drink, drink a glass of water.

I am trying to do the same thing - cut out diet sodas. I am thinking of buying club soda and those squirty flavored things (aspartame free).

Yes, one thing at a time.

Is it regular soda or diet? Cut back bu cutting out one soda a day for a week, then two, etc. Until you have kicked it.

Supplement with water and flavored waters and sparking waters.

It is what it is....

I would start with one thing at a time to start.

As for me, when I quit drinking soda (diet dr. pepper was my addiction), I replaced it with flavored waters and unsweetened iced tea (which I then sweetened myself with truvia). The flavored waters that I chose were the ones that have a little carbonation in them, so that I can still enjoy the "fizzy feeling" that soda gave me. I have slowly begun fazing those out and replacing them with water that I flavor myself with lemon & lime slices or cucumber & mint. This might help you as well.

As for quitting junk food, you might find that going "cold turkey" works best for you, or you might find that that method causes you uncontrollable cravings. Start by replacing one junk food item with a healthier alternative (like swapping chips for popcorn or salt-free pretzels). Then slowly work on replacing that with a fruit or veggie with a little healthy fat (to help keep you satisfied). One of my favorite snacks is 1/2 cup blueberries and a 100 calorie pack of raw almonds.

Good luck! (:
