i don't drive; walking is my only option (and public transit).

ANOTHER chiefly american problem; other industrialized nations have made public transit a priority and/or penalized those who insist on using single-person vehicles. we instead let the car companies rip up all of the tracks and sell people on the idea that they "have" to guzzle gas to get anywhere; driving is their only option because people haven't risen up to say HEY, that is totally F'ed up!!!!

we have also destroyed anything close to a NEIGHBORHOOD because of shiite like wal-mart.

'MURICA! F yeah!

sorry to not be clear-- it was a fascinating article...

the part about being american was an observation about the fact that we would largely, as a nation, prefer to ignore any alarming facts or statistics and watch our televisions and eat our genetically modified doritos.

in canada and europe, citizens are much more mobilized to try to DO SOMETHING about how much we are polluting our earth and destroying other species and ourselves, and they are putting pressures on their governments to ban GMOs and bee-killing pesticides and high-nitrogen fertilizers which are killing our oceans...

it's all too late now, most likely, with fukishima and all, but there is a great deal to be said for "if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention." and most americans are not paying attention.

@GYPSYGOTH: that is, perhaps, part of the rise in obesity across the board. However, it does not account for the rise in obesity across the world...even in third-world nations. The article suggests that other factors may be in play here. Blaming America is not the right answer.

Yep...and yet so few people give one iota about organic farming or the tens of thousands of untested chemicals the FDA allows corporations to poison us and the planet with.

...because people have their televisions and their automobiles and their cheap, subsidized, empty processed calories from genetically modified corn and soybeans, and gasoline byproducts. Whee! Ain't it great to be American?

As the American people got fatter, so did marmosets, vervet monkeys and mice. The problem may be bigger than any of us. An interesting article...I highly suggest that you read this report.
