sorry to not be clear-- it was a fascinating article...
the part about being american was an observation about the fact that we would largely, as a nation, prefer to ignore any alarming facts or statistics and watch our televisions and eat our genetically modified doritos.
in canada and europe, citizens are much more mobilized to try to DO SOMETHING about how much we are polluting our earth and destroying other species and ourselves, and they are putting pressures on their governments to ban GMOs and bee-killing pesticides and high-nitrogen fertilizers which are killing our oceans...
it's all too late now, most likely, with fukishima and all, but there is a great deal to be said for "if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention." and most americans are not paying attention.
