Just drink when you are thirsty and watch the color of your urine. If it's kind of a pale straw yellow, you are drinking plenty. Most people do not need to monitor how much they drink or make sure they drink a certain number of cups of water per day. They do absolutely fine drinking when thirsty. It's a myth that most of us are walking around dehydrated and need to force ourselves to drink more water.

You should not be getting up 3-4 times per night to urinate. That's really going to be disruptive to your sleep and enough good quality sleep is important for good health!

I would not recommend you cut off liquids after a certain time at night. If you are thirsty, you should drink no matter the time of day or night. Thirst is your body's way of telling you that you should give it water. Listen to your body. Don't force yourself to drink water when you aren't thirsty and don't avoid drinking when you are thirsty just because it's after a certain time at night.

ONE pee a night, frankly, is going to be normal for most women who are in or through menapause. It's just the reality of our bodies.

but yeah, teh 3 or 4 times is a big deal. Still you aren't drinking that much water, so it might be worth discussing it with your doc, the next time you see her or him. just in one of those "by teh way" moments. :-)

Just trying to learn to eat right, before i worry too much about cals.

thank you so much everyone.

You're right....I wasn't including my coffee & milk in the allowance. Will also try stopping all liquids from 9pm to see if I can sleep throughout the night, though the 3am ritual has been a habit for some 5 or 6 years.

thx again

Mia

It's an interesting topic. Years ago, there were "experts" giving the recommendation that one's pee SHOULD be clear, and if it wasn't, you're not getting enough water. I started following the rule of thumb that one should drink 1/2 the number of his/her body weight in oz. So I got used to drinking 100+ oz of water a day. Now I weigh half that, but I still drink 90+ oz on an average day, and yes, my pee is clear. Yes, I get up to go in the night.

But I do get thirsty, and I work out a lot and sweat a lot. So I don't really know. I suppose I could ditch one of the 2 20 oz cups of water I've gotten into the habit of having while at work.

Motivation will get you to the start line; discipline will get you to the finish.

Yep, I agree that if you're being woken up so much to pee, you're getting too much liquid! Staying hydrated is important, but so is sleep! ;)

Check the color of your urine. If your urine is pale straw yellow, you're getting the right amount. If it's clear, you are drinking too much! Do keep in mind that excessive thirst is a potential sign of diabetes; although it doesn't sound to me like you're drinking an excessive amount, each person is different.

ANYTIME that peeing interferes with your normal activities, yes, you are drinking too much!
Remember, everything you drink counts - you do not need to drink 8 glasses of water in addition to everything else you drink. In fact, you do not need to drink any arbitrary number of glasses. Just drink when you're thirsty, and you'll be fine. The 8 glasses thing is a myth anyway.

if you are having to wake up that often to go to the bathroom, try cutting off all liquids several hours before bed. all liquids includes things like soup and watermelon that have high water content. push that time back if you need to so that you can sleep through the night.
which doesn't mean drink less, it just means drink earlier in your day.

-google first. ask questions later.

Hello Team emoticon

I'm a senior and I'm on Day 3 but already my husband complains that I'm spoiling his sleep by going to the bathroom up to 4 times a night. Previously I had gone once (at 3am emoticon) I know for sure that I do not have bladder problems so am I drinking water too late at night, or what?

Daily I'm having 8 glasses of water plus 2 or 4 cups coffee and a cup of milk. No other liquids

Thx for any advice,

Mia
