Keep all the junk food out of my cart, frig and pantry. I cook at home. At this point I don't frequent restaurants, because I don't know what they use for food prep or what they add to my food. After the weight loss, I will make it a special treat once in a moon, but will still be pretty choosy in what I eat. And sugar has no place in my life anymore, so unless it's fruit, no desserts for me. And I don't miss it at all. I love my fruits! I feel so much better and I definitely look so much better, after all I am down 4 sizes! And I am so proud of myself, finally getting to the goal line, by the end of this year, if not sooner.

You can't turn a Boston Bull into a whippet.

Don't be afraid to walk on the moon.

Life is just a chair of bowlies
(Erma Bombeck)

My nutrition tracker is like GOLD to me.

Our reward is not food, but achievement. Many of us make the mistake of rewarding ourselves with food, isn't that what got us here in the first place?

SUGAR IS EVIL, DON'T USE IT!! IN ANYTHING!!

I started reading the book "In Defense of Food". I liked what the author said at the beginning of the book, and modified it for me. It's becoming my new mantra, and I try to do a quick review and check in my head before I eat.

1) Eat REAL food
2) Not too much
3) Mostly plants
4) Savor and Enjoy every bite! (my addition!)

I love to cook, so I cook using fresh produce and try to make vegetables my largest part of all meals. On my days off I love making a wonderful egg white omelet with tons of vegetable and a little sharp cheese. My lunches are usually a turkey wrap, once again I load it with veggies and I use a healthy spinach dip instead of mayo! Dinners are usually chicken or fish made with once again veggies. I love to roast my veggies to add more flavor!

I have learned to love water! I was a diet soda drinker. I gave it up in January and now I find when I do try to drink one...a sip or two will do and I then look for my water. If you are not a water drinker start by squeezing some citrus in your water. The flavor is what I think we miss and lime in the water adds that refreshing flavor!

The last thing that I think really helps is having veggies chopped in the frig to grab when I want to snack on some thing. Keep a variety of veggies...and maybe some hummus it you want to treat yourself to a dip!

O, one more think....measure your servings!

I am starting to realize that it's easy to track my daily foods I eat, but it doesn't stop there. I need to look at my tracking at the end of each day , be accountable and honest for all I ate and make improvements in my eating habits based on what I did today. Anyone can jot down what they eat, but to improve on it gets me thinking, hey I made some good choices or, hey, I need to do better tomorrow.

Never give up.
I am the only one who can hold me back.

I eat breakfast - never did before but it does keep me full longer - oatmeal no added sugar only fruit or nuts or a whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter..
I eat REAL food - avoid packaged foods whenever possible
I drink at least 8 - 9 glasses of water a day.

I have 4 things:

1) pre-plan every single day, and stick to it
2) eat low carb
3) eat real food
4) drink only plain water

Plan ahead!

Pack my lunch for work, go out to eat with my mind already made up that I'm going to order something healthy, buy groceries and avoid eating out if it's unnecessary (basically, not a planned social event).

I watch my carbs. I find that when I watch my carbs rather than calories, I end up with less cravings and it's SO much easier not to want to eay the junk food. If I get the right amount of fat in my meals, it keeps me from getting too hungry and/or thinking about food all day long.

I have started allowing myself to have treats every so often, and this helps because any time I do have a craving, I can always tell myself 'don't have it now, keep on track and you can have it on Saturday'. By the time Saturday rolls around, that food that I thought I 'needed' isn't even in my thoughts anymore.

First off, if I don't use Spark then BUH-bye weightloss!!!

So, knowing my calories, I eat what I want within that range.

Turns out, I like to feel full. So my choices head towards veggies, whole grains, with protein to maximize fullness. Turns out that is what is healthy eating.

I make sure it's healthy food I love - yummy fruits and veggies in season, a tasty recipe (I'm a sucker for a great soup).

My weakness is soda and eating out with family/friends. I appreciate the fact that I can portion control at home and can live without dessert just fine.

One day, one meal, one workout at a time.....

I use an Atkins/LCHF/Primal/Paleo approach - so I avoid all grains, sugar (including most fruits most of the time), starchy vegetables (including legumes), and processed foods of all sorts. I do consume small amounts of dairy, limited to heavy cream, butter, and hard cheeses. Eating LCHF, I sleep better, digest better, enjoy boundless energy, better moods, and ZERO cravings - which makes this plan easier to stick with, the more I adhere to it. Basically, just consuming fresh, REAL food, and limiting foods that trigger appetite (in my case, carbs in general).

I do track everything that I eat as well, for me it's important because I am notorious for not eating enough as I seldom experience hunger - if I am not eating enough, my energy tends to be lower than normal.

One of my mantras is "In All Things Moderation". I don't avoid triggers; I'm more aware of them, but I either CHOOSE not let them get to me. The triggers are always going to be there. It's how you handle them that's important.

Also remember not to starve yourself. Eat multiple meals and mini meals throughout the day. The old rule of 3 square meals is not the way to go. Have three meals and 2-3 healthy snacks during the day.

Meal then a snack,
then a meal, then a snack,
then a meal, then a snack.

that keeps your metabolism pumped to help you burn calories and fat.

Very simply, if it's not in the house, I can't be tempted by it.

And if I'm buying stuff for the kids lunches, like a snack cookie occasionally, I buy at the dollar store where I know I'm not tempted to eat what comes from there since, in my mind anyways, doesn't taste the same...

Lots of good ideas in this thread. I use some of them - including trying to eat at home (within my control) before going to social activities with dangerous food choices. Also if it's an occasion where everyone is bringing something, I try to ensure I bring a safe choice so I'm not trapped with only unhealthy options.

The biggest thing I *try* to do though is accept that I make mistakes. A bad day yesterday (or football Sunday) does not mean that I should carry that over to my next meal, or my next day - I deserve my best effort after a mistake - so moving on mentally and getting back on track is my best tool for long term success.

Another thing I do is strictly limit restaurant, cafe, and deli food. It's hard controlling for saturated fat, cholesterol, calories, and sodium when eating out. Most meals are high in at least one of these things, and often foods are high in all of them. So, I find that I can control them better by not eating out as much. .

I make sure I have healthy fruits and veggies to snack on. Otherwise, I will start grazing the cupboards around 10 a.m. and not stop until 4 or so. It's awful. But I have found if I do my food prep and have it ready, there are no excuses to 'graze'.

I am quite new, but I am trying to eat foods that will help me feel better physically, (i.e. more energy, better digestion, etc.). By Drinking more water (still haven't gotten up to 8 glasses a day - yet! emoticon ) and eating more fiber, I have already noticed the benefits to my digestive system.

Thanks everyone!
Spark Cheers!

I buy all the fixin's, and have everything washed and cut up in little bowls for my veggie sub, that I have for lunch every day. I use cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, shredded lettuce and shredded carrots, green bell pepper, olives, banana peppers and spicy brown mustard on a whole wheat vienna roll. I absolutely LOVE my veggie subs. I can put it together quickly when everything is ready - and costs a lot less than Subway.

I also buy frozen salmon fillets - 2 pound bag of 6 individual portions for $9.99. They go straight from the freezer to the toaster oven with a little olive oil spray and lemon-pepper seasoning. Ready in 20 minutes. Delicious and all those omega-3's !

I buy a bag of organic apples (3 lbs for $4.99) so whenever I'm hungry in between meals I can one for a healthy snack.

I make my own homemade chicken soup with carrots, onions, and celery. I skip the noodles. It's so easy to make and low in calories.

Another favorite snack is popcorn that I pop on top of the stove with a little canola oil. I'm learning to eat it without salt. Popcorn is a whole grain, right?

Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you.

To eat better, I plan ahead by bringing healthy snacks to work so I have something available to eat and don't go to the vending machine - just 9 raw almonds and a glass of water actually makes my hunger go away. You wouldn't think it would, but give it a try. When I first started my weight loss journey I had two tricks when I was craving salt or chocolate. Instead of getting potato chips, I'd just eat a tiny amount of salt (I know, weird, but it worked for me). When I would crave chocolate, I would eat three chocolate chips - letting each one melt in my mouth. Both did the trick... "desperate times called for desperate measures, as they say."

I also know I just can't keep certain foods in the house. I go grocery shopping early in the morning - buy lots of veggies and fruit when I shop (not that those are my favs, but if that's what I have in the house I'll eat them). Spices/fresh ground pepper, olive oil and citrus juice are my best friend when it comes to veggies. Also, if you haven't heard of Walden Farms dressings - you have to look into them - immediately. =) Trust me.

These things have made a big difference for me - hopefully, they will help you, too.

I've done it before... I can do it again!

I have read many articles, attended nutrition seminars, and have befriended with and follow nutrition experts on Facebook. I LEARNED about food and what it's doing to me.

I prepare the foods that I feel are better for my body in advance, and always have "healthy" snacks with me so that I'm not tempted to stop somewhere and pick up garbage/foods that aren't idea for my body and my healthy lifestyle. I also bring my lunches into work.

I drink LOTS of water and eat lots of foods filled with protein and fiber so that there is no room for anything else.

I DO NOT keep "bad" food in the house.

All of these things help me stay on track. I am not subscribing to this topic, but if anyone has a remark on my post, please feel free to post it on my page and let me know what you're responding to. I'm always looking for new friends. :)

EVERYTHING in moderation! I give into my cravings, just on a much small and less frequent scale. Realistically, I'm not going to stop eating the things I love for the rest of my life, so a big part of my change was learning how to incorporate my desires into my healthy lifestyle.

DIDS70 - Excellent! You're spot on!

As for me? I eat too little in a day, with some days topping out at 700 Calories max... NOT good. I'm creating a meal plan for myself, food from all groups, and only food that I like. Leaving no room for gaps or excuses. And definitely no room for junk food emoticon

Portion size. I made the mistake of thinking that if a food is healthy, it's OK to eat of lot of it. WRONG!

I purchased a very pretty long dress that I loved at a thrift store. It is about 2 sizes smaller that I am. I tacked it to one of my bedroom walls, in a pretty draped position showing off the extensive beading and lovely print.

Whenever I am facing a food choice, I now just think to myself - "Do you want the ice cream cone - or do you want the dress?" Do you really want that taco - or do you want the dress?"

I think about how much I will love having the dress flowing around my ankles and I smile and say to myself - "No question! I want the dress!" The decision is made, and I head home to my fruits and veggies with a huge smile on my face...This is working really well for me - and because I get to choose something that I really, really want - I walk away from the decision making point feeling strong and happy with anticipation to watch that scale drop and drop.

Lost another 1/2 pound since yesterday! Yea!!! : )

Something else came to mind. Before every meal, I have about 6 ounces of water. That can help you feel full before you begin eating, especially when you're very hungry. That way you are less likely to eat as much.

What a great question.

I start each morning with a great breakfast and the attitude that the new day is another chance for me to be good to myself. Planning meals helps, and it all begins with breakfast. I have a few go-to breakfast meal combinations that keep me on track for the rest of the day.

In addition to planning meals (with a big focus on breakfast) I find that exercising is a great way to help me eat better. Spending time exercising makes me feel healthy and strong and I am less likely to mess that up with junk food or even an extra portion of the healthy stuff.

NIKI778 hit the nail on the head. You have to plan all your meals ahead of time. Making a weekly schedule is best, including your snacks. Even if you don't do it for the whole week, it can be helpful if you're doing it for a couple of days at a time. Sparkpeople's meal planner is a good tool for this. There are others out there too. If you aren't sure how many calories are in something, as well as how much fat and sodium and cholesterol, it can be hard to maintain proper levels. Planning is always the best option.

Because it is more expensive I tend to cook more in order not to loose the food. Plus. there isn't a whole lot of ''organic junk''. Also I stick to the list offered by sparkpeople. It keeps everythig steady. I also try to keep a budget so I don't eat out too much.

There are so many things but here are some of the bigger ones:

Make weekly meal plan for a balanced dinner every night (use this to make my shopping list, adding other basics that we need)

Have a healthy snack cupboard at work (it includes things like fiber bars, protein bars, oatmeal for quick breakfasts, small bags of microwave popcorn, nuts, something for my every mood) Plus there are frozen meals in the freezer that I love so if I don't have time to pack at home I have options at work and don't need to go out.

Always have a variety of fresh fruits and veggies on hand for snacks and to add to meals

Don't waste calories on drinks-everything is water besides my morning coffee.

replace sour cream with non-fat plain Greek yogurt, use this and salt free seasonings to make yummy dip for my fresh veggies, helps me to eat them as a snack.

Make sure that I eat breakfast and an afternoon snack

Measure and weigh my food

I always keep my frig and cupboards stocked with healthy, clean foods. Fruit is in my fruit bowl on the counter. Egg whites, fresh spinach and mushrooms are on hand for breakfast or a snack. Weekly I go to the farmer's market so I have fresh veggies. My garden provides me with green and banana peppers, and summer squash. Chia seeds, wildflower honey, peanut butter and ezekiel are always available. Since I have been on a healthier mission, it seems that I grocery shop a lot because I never want to run out of healthy options.

Keep health foods on hand and rely on produce and fiber to fill me.

I stock fresh fruit in a bowl for snacks.

Almost daily, I have make a morning smoothie with soy protein powder, spinach and sometimes crushed pineapple with berries or a banana and soy milk with cocoa or coffee.
Having my sweets early in the day keeps me from feeling deprived but I'm better able to control cravings.

I make a pot of vegetable soup as often as needed and eat some daily or alternate with a fresh salad at lunchtime along with a sandwich. Since I take lunch to work and it is cool inside, I eat this even during summer or fall (our autumn is when we get really warm weather.)

I plan lots of meals around veggies. Spaghetti squash, stir fry, dinner salads, chili, Mexican meals with lots of beans. When we have a more traditional supper it's grilled chicken or broiled fish with two vegetables, and a starch - baked sweet potatoes, brown rice, barley, farfel, corn, peas or beans.

Since no one is perfect, I keep sugar free candy at my desk so when the stress of work gets to me & I reach for something sweet, it doesn't upset the blood sugar so much.

At home I make a lot of fruit desserts - baked apples, fruit crisps & cobblers, sugar free jello with fruit added. I also eat sorbet when I want something else or the occasional soy yogurt.

Am trying to stop all diet soda and instead drink ice tea but the occasional Vernor's ginger ale
works its way in. Moderation is my motto.

I start my day out with baked oatmeal with peaches, blueberries and almonds. I make it on the weekend and reheat it in the microwave in the morning adding a little vanilla yogurt on top.
Packing lunches to take to work everyday is more of a problem for me.

Never give up.
I am the only one who can hold me back.
