I use deep breathing exercises. I also have a set of little phrases that I repeat to myself

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

Drink water, chew gum, play video games, answer e-mails, clean up e-mails, dust something, eat salad mix out of a bag like chips LOL!, call a friend, go for a walk, play music and dance, any and everything I can do!

The only "diet" that works is consistency!

It depends.... if it's night time noshing I like an decaf earl grey tea with some milk and honey for some sweetness. If its middle of the day I try a healthy snack, cheesestring, smoothie, fruit, I also have a stash of healthy easy recipes I've saved so making sure they're on hand.

My danger time is in front of the television in the evening after my daughter's in bed. Best way around that is to have my laptop open at the same time, hit Facebook, Tumblr, or play Candy Crush or cruise my friend's list during the commercials so I am not bored waiting for the show to come back on!

From the few I've seen, so far, the trick seems to be about keeping busy/active- physically if not mentally.

I noticed many still watch television when they notice themselves eating out of boredom. Might you be eating as a way to not feel the reactions you have to what you are watching? I noticed that I have that tendency. It seems less out of boredom and more to do with emotions.

If that is the case, is there a way to turn within and be with or confront the responses you have to what you are watching? It might not be much of a physical activity, but it's good to know yourself. Distraction is good, perhaps, but I like to get into my head, sometimes.

I've been doing puzzles, even if the tv is on, in the evening. It keeps your mind and hands busy.

I tend to eat when I watch tv. So I started knitting instead. My hands are busy, so I am less likely to nibble on whatever is around.

D1...If you need to start small, do so. If being busy does not keep you from 'boredom' eating, then at least control what you reach for. We all had to start somewhere. If your hands just automatically reach in a snack dish, wear mittens, or rub lotion on your hands. The first step is awareness.
If your hands need to be busy in front of the TV, play solitaire with real cards while you watch. emoticon

If this was your last day, how would you spend it?

I clean or organize...something to keep my hands and mind busy. My biggest temptation times are mid morning and evening after the kids are asleep and it's just me and hubby watching TV. Mid morning, I am home alone with time to myself. Maybe play a video game. Just stay busy.

I portion out my snacks into snack size ziplock baggies. 1 cup of cherrios is 100 calories.11 caramel rice cakes is 100 calories, 20 mini pretzels is 100 calories. 24 almonds is 170 calories, etc etc etc. I keep a box of snacks ready. At night or late afternoon when I need a snack it is all portioned out and I am not tempted by eating from a box or bag.

Recently someone said to me that we eating is not entertainment, but rather gaining nutrition. I am in complete agreement. Gone are the days when I said "I am bored with the same old food." When I think I am going to go down that path, I go to spark recipes for a new idea. But I'm getting to the place - not there yet - when I can whip something up and know that it is nutritious and in my range. I love spark recipes!

I will go... I will do...

I also find that this only happens in the evening, when watching TV. So I can play backgammon on my Blackberry, check out a social network, eat a sliced apple with a natural fat free yoghurt dip or enjoy an iced lolly that I make containing yoghurt, vanilla essence and less than one square of chopped white chocolate.

Lately I succumb. I need to get back in the habit of going for a walk. My boredom binges happen at night, after work and dinner, usually around 10:30pm. So I used to go for a quick l 20-30 min walk because that way I didn't eat AND I got in exercise.

I found the best way to stop my night eating was to replace the habit with a new habit that gave me the feeling I was looking for - in my case I wanted to feel peaceful - so I stopped feeling resentful about the kitchen cleanup and looked to make my kitchen neat and tidy and under control - I reframed how I thought about the cleanup - instead now I see it as a reward for myself - creating a peaceful haven. As if by magic the night eating has stopped and my house feels more under control too - a double bonus.

Play dress up. Either in my own closet with my new small clothes, or at a store where I have no intention of buying anything. It gets me away from the kitchen, and reminds me of one of the reasons I live this way now.

So many things for this--drink water, chew sugar-free gum, go for a walk, brush your teeth... One thing I did was get snacks that were harder to eat, lol...like the unsalted peanuts that are still in the shell. It gives my hands something to do, but I can't just heave-ho a whole bunch of salty, high-calorie peanuts into my mouth at will, you know?
Keeping busy is always a great one, though, and I've heard lots of people say, like SBUSH7, that knitting/crocheting is a great way to keep yourself in check!

It has taken awhile but it has simply been conditioning ... if I feel like eating I stop and ask myself if I am really hungry or is it just something to do.... I take and drink a full glass of water and then find something to do for 15 min or so... if after that I still feel hungry I find a healthy snack to eat... veggies or piece of fruit.. maybe a few slices of cheese with triscuits...I don't keep chips or that kind of stuff in house... if I want them I go get them and then only enough to solve my craving... of course I do keep a stash of dark chocolate (it's my fav) but these days it is a treat and controlled eating... I am determined to eat healthy always... changing my outlook on how I view food has been hard but worth it.

Don't know what else you've tried with your popcorn, but there are a number of seasoned "salt" Mrs. Dash or spray on flavors to make your popcorn taste better. Butter flavored popcorn, there are a number of ways adding flavors to the popcorn.

Also, drinking water or non-caloric drinks(lemonade, Crystal Light, iced tea) as well as learning how to do some craft (like scrapbooking, crocheting, knitting) anything that will keep your hands busy

Hope this helps.

This past winter I taught myself how to crochet. I love it & it has really helped me cut down on the evening in-front-of-the-TV eating. In addition I very seldom buy snacky types of food- if it's not here, I can't eat it. Instead I try to keep fruits & veggies & low-fat cheese stix in the frig.

Boredom eating is a real challenge for me. I usually try to change rooms. I know is sounds silly but seems to work if I get away from the food source. If I must, my latest go to food has been hot air popcorn with no seasoning. Not very tasty but then I get bored eating it! emoticon

I have a tendency to eat and play computer games at the same time, like during the loading screen. I hate waiting. I hate not having something to do. So what I do is.. not bring food into my room. My kitchen is downstairs. I also not buy junk food from the store. I know if I have it.. I'm going to eat it. So if I do get a snack, its going to be a banana or string cheese. I basicly just deny myself the option of eating junk food.

Boredom eating is one of the habits that contributed to my weight gain. I used to absentmindedly open the fridge or go into the pantry like a programmed drone sometimes. Eating just gave me something to do.

I try to do something productive that will give me a sense of accomplishment afterward, whether it's finishing a book or even washing a few dishes. Finishing a task leaves me feeling positive, whereas boredom eating just makes me disappointed with myself. Having somebody else around also really helps. You can call or text someone if you're alone.

A sine qua non of boredom eating is that you are bored. So do something to stop being bored! Loads of good suggestions already: my favourite is to go outside, either for a brisk walk or just pottering in the garden. If it is cold/dark/wet, I do some cleaning (maybe just one room, or one floor, but anything to get my mind off food and keep my body active), or perhaps have a cookathon of preparing veg etc. for healthy meals for the next few days. For quieter moments try reading, crosswords, knitting, cards, computer games - whatever floats your particular boat. TV is a bit of a no-no: as has already been pointed out, it is full of adverts for food; also, it is frankly a bit boring in itself and doesn't have the desired effect of reducing/eliminating boredom, and in any case it leaves both hands free for mindless rummaging in crisp packets and transferring the contents thereof to one's mouth. Try getting out there and living life yourself, rather than watching programmes about other people's lives!

Exercise usually curbs my cravings to eat while bored. If I find myself bored in front of the TV I'll march in place to curb boredom cravings

Primarily reading or card making.

If this was your last day, how would you spend it?

I started giving myself manicures while watching TV in the evenings. I can't eat while painting my nails and while they dry.
That "night time in front of the TV" for me always meant snack time. It's like I get bored just sitting there watching TV and have to also be doing something else.

To have a meaningful life, plant trees under whose shade you will never sit.

I've rediscovered knitting in retirement. I felt that once I retired I was destined to gain back all the weight I had worked so hard to lose. Now I have an array of scarves and fingerless mittens to give as Christmas presents and baby clothes for my new grandson.
I am now working on a sweater for hubby and the list goes on. It focuses me and I don't even think about snacking.
Just got out of a size 28 pant into a 26!

Yeah, thanks Sparkpeople!

I've just started making it a point to NOT eat while in front of the TV... If I eat to actually EAT and not for some form of entertainment, I find that I feel more satisfied with my smaller portions and enjoy my food more (:

Lots of good suggestions here. I love to crochet and cross stitch. Keeps me busy till the urge to go get something passes.

These are the stairs I have to get up and down without dying(LOL).

I've started making up a to-do list the night before, and I post it on my fridge. If I wander into the kitchen feeling bored, that list gives me some options to complete!

If I really just feel like working with food (cooking is my main creative outlet), sometimes I'll make something to have with dinner, clean and cut up some produce from our garden, shred cheese, or some other food prep task.

If I really just want the comfort of making and consuming something, I'll make a cup of tea. The routine of heating the water, waiting for it to steep, then adding a splash of milk and a pinch of sugar is part of the comfort, as is just sitting down near a window to enjoy the tea and watch the world.

Take life one day at a time - enjoy today before you worry about tomorrow.

Reading--can't eat if both my hands are holding a book.
Playing a fast paced game--don't want to quit and have to keep going.
Excercise
House clean
Getting on spark
Going to bed (being tired and late at night are big triggers for me)

TV really doesn't help because every other ad on there is food related. Although watching something like Netflix is nice without the commercials.

I've been following the Zone Diet for many years and I am literally not hungry. When you're not hungry, boredom eating doesn't even enter the picture.

With a pre-teen in the house, there is plenty of temptation to be found in the pantry. I've found if I plan for a couple of snacks during the day, I am less likely to actually eat it. I'll ask myself, "Do I really need to eat that?" And, if I am able distract myself with reading a blog on my tablet or playing a game, great. If I absolutely have to chew on something, I have allowed for it and I don't feel guilty. Allowed snacks are low calorie like almonds (1/2 serving), fruit or low-fat cheese.
