I just got two trivia questions wrong about dietary cholesterol and I think I was right according to the latest research. The first question had to do with what you needed to restrict in your diet to lower your cholesterol ( I don't have the exact wording). The answers included - trans fat, saturated fat, dietary cholesterol and polyunsaturated fats, all of the above or answers A, B, and C. I choose A as I don't agree with the answer that includes dietary cholesterol. I believe they have found that it is mainly trans fat and saturated fat that affect your cholesterol levels.

The very next question asked about the guidelines for the amount of dietary cholesterol that your diet should be restricted to. It is my understanding that this guideline is passe, that it doesn't apply any more because restricting cholesterol doesn't really work. The way to reduce your cholesterol level is through reducing the amount of trans fat and saturated fat in your diet as well as losing weight, exercising, eating more vegetables and reducing the amount of inflammation in your body.

It may be that the guidelines for cholesterol have not been changed officially by the appropriate governing bodies, but it is my understanding that the medical community has changed their ideas about dietary cholesterol in light of the most recent research and I don't feel it is a good idea for Spark People to continue with ideas that are currently in question if not already resolved to be different.

Which of the following ingredients is NOT a caloric sweetener?

Dextrose
Sucralose
Maltose
Diastase

I chose diastase because its an enzyme and therefore not any kind of sweetener. I knew sucralose was a no-calorie sweetener so it seemed to me that BOTH were not caloric sweeteners. The question would have been better worded if it asked "Which of the following is a sweetener with no calories."

Harumph!
