Actually, I know EXACTLY what you're talking about! When you get to the end of the month, you start having to deny yourself the things you want to eat, because it's not in the budget.

Then, when you get your money, your larder is full, and your eyes say "Finally! I get to eat all the things!"

It's the same effect you get when dieting. Deny yourself the things you love, and you binge!

I think the trick for you might be to save some goodies for the end of the month. Stick t hem in the back of the pantry with a time label on them... to be opened only during the final week of the month. Then you're saving some goodies, and you don't have to deny yourself because of budget.

I really don't know what to say but I was going to say that one or two days doesn't hurt (with me anyway) but it must do in your case.

The only advice is to say don't do it.

I hope there is someone who can help you

Good luck

Punky, I've been there too, every so often there is a day where I am completely and utterly out of control. There are times where I can feel that 'state' just clicks on all of a sudden and I know I'm about to screw up big and I'm helpless to stop it and end up binging on and off the rest of the day uncontrollably. It's hard to explain what that state is, almost like I've a taste in my mouth that won't go away, something akin to having copper in your mouth or licking a 9 volt battery. One thing I have found is drinking something sweet like juice or even milk seems to help quiet that feeling. I'm slowing starting to see too that on days I don't drink enough water are days where I'm more likely to have the problem.

One other comment, it IS entirely possible to gain several pounds in a week, even a few days. When I was at 340 lbs I could easily see a 6-8 pounds change in just a couple of days. I suspect some of it was genuine weight gain, while another part was likely just the amount/mass of food still being digested in my system. Sometimes those laxative pills start looking attractive, though I know of course they are not the best solution.

Hang in there Punky, keep logging your food and the events happening to you and around you (not just the apparently stressful ones), you may start to see a pattern emerge.

When I saw the title of this thread my first thought was this: ovulation. I say that because I am exactly the same way, I don't gain a ton of weight but am never satiated for about three days a month. Track your cycle for a few months, I believe you will find your answer :)

I just realised the email I used for Sparkpeople has been dead for a year! :( Did you add me and I didn't add you back? *Send me a message in my sparkmail/wall*

Punky - have you had any times in your life when having enough food was an issue? If so, perhaps the abundance of food is triggering emotions for you. Could you spread it out over 2 trips instead of just one? That way, you would know subconsciously that there was more coming soon and you might not feel so anxious?

It may help to really listen to the "self-chatter" that is going around in your head before and during that first week. What are you telling yourself that's making this wish to eat so overwhelming? Can you change that self-talk to redirect your attention elsewhere, or at least talk yourself down some of the time?

Mentioning this to a counselor or your doctor might be a good idea, as others have mentioned.

I've had times like that, bought a bunch of food, and then wanted to eat, eat, eat. Obviously I wasn't really hungry, so it had to be some psychological thing related to all the available food. The See Food diet.

I don't know what might work for you, but try putting everything away so that it takes some effort to get it ready to eat. Then if you pull it out anyway, set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes, and wait. When the timer goes off, ask yourself if you really, really want to eat it. If you do, eat a moderate portion, then put it away until the next time. If you don't, then put it away and feel strong and virtuous.

Unfortunately, it will require some self-discipline. That's always where I fall short.

Are you sure it's actually related to having more food in the house, or does your shopping trip just happen to sync up with your monthly cycle (which can do crazy things to food cravings and what your body demands)? And as someone else mentioned, it's just not possible to gain 10-20 lbs in a single week - you would have to eat some 7,000 calories every single day to gain 10. 12,000 daily to gain 20. 7000 calories would be 14 McDonald's Quarter Pounders with cheese. In a single day. Grocery shopping usually means less calorie dense food, meaning you're eating even more to get to that number of calories.

If you're really eating so much food that first week (still probably not 7k calories), and you're sure it has nothing to do with hormones, but just possessing that much food - I wouldn't shop monthly anymore, and I would really focus on buying food that isn't calorie dense that takes time to prepare. I would probably also consider making an appointment with someone skilled in handling food addiction if my appetite was that closely tied to how much food I owned (or didn't). I still think hormones are a likely culprit, but your association that "I want to eat everything because I just bought a lot of food" is worrisome and I would want to talk to a professional about that.

Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

I agree with Slimmer. There might be an underlying reason as to why you're eating habits are the way they are. I too shop for groceries once a month but I don't think that's reason enough to eat out of control for a week. Just on the bit of info you gave, it's hard to gauge whatever issue you are having. My immediate thought is emotional eating but there could be other factors. Again, trying talking to a Dr. or sit down and truly evaluate why you're going through this and see what changes you can make for the better!

I don't have a week like that (thank heavens), but I do find that every so often I have a Day when I am starving and it doesn't matter what I eat, I can't seem to be satiated. I am very conscious of it and work hard to not give in to my cravings too much..but it sure does make me miserable. It is also kinda strange how the next day, I will be back to my normal self again

Good luck...I hope you can get help understanding the triggers and learn to cope.

short and mid-term goal:
stay consistent and keep losing weight.
long-term goal:
feel better about myself and not have weight be something I think about on a daily basis.

I also have 1 week a month that I am extra hungry. I'm sure it's hormonal because it's usually the week I'm ovulating. During that week, I just make sure I eat foods that are extra filling. I eat alot more protein than normal that week so I feel fuller. I still tend to eat towards the top of my calorie range, and will occasionally go over, but I don't let it derail me. I have 1 week that I never seem to be hungry, so that week I force myself to eat and I tend to be towards the lower end of my calorie range. The 2 weeks tend to balance themselves out.

You just need to learn what works for you. It took alot of trial and error for me to figure out what works for me. And that's after I figured out this was happening every month and around the same time period.

Maybe if you can switch your monthly shopping to immediately after that week, that might help. If your hungry week is right before you go shopping, you may not have as much food in the house and less likely to eat as much.

I have to exercise in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing. -Marsha Doble

There is NO WAY that you would genuinely gain 10-20lb in a week. You would have to eat 35,000 EXTRA calories (on top of what you need) in the week just for the 10lb gain.

What is happening that you eat like that? It is quite possible that SOME of the weight is fluid related as in your body retaining fluid from excess sodium etc. Because it happens once a month, is it possible that it could be related to TOM, but you just associate it with the shopping?

I have a feeling that you would be best off to talk with your Dr about what is happening. It is possible that there could be a psychological component to it, and if that is the case, your Dr can refer you to a Therapist to help you deal with it. Your Dr can also examine you and do bloods to see if there is something medical going on.

Kris

The rest of the month im not hungry at all and sometimes have to make myself eat . This one week hinders all my hard work the rest of the month.
