I agree - my scale is the best tool I ever got for this journey.
The one I have is also a postal scale. I'm pretty sure I got it through Amazon, and it wasn't very expensive. It measures in grams, ounces, pounds, and kilograms, has a tare feature, and is very compact.
The entire unit measures 6 1/2 x 9 x 1 1/2". The actual measuring surface is 5 1/2 " square. The only maker markings I can find on it say "MyWeigh." Its capacity is quoted to be 15 pounds! I've never used it for even half of that. hehe
There's one listed on Amazon right now at www.amazon.com/My-Weigh-7001-Shipping-Acce
This one evidently comes with postal accessories (per the ad). Mine is just the base unit.
Considering how often I use it, I think the price is very reasonable. It's never given me a bit of trouble, and I've had it a couple years now.
I agree, eyeballing portions is better than nothing... but it's a real eye-opener to actually see what the REAL portion size is. I'm better at eyeballing now, since I've had this tool to refer back to. Spoons and cups are also useful, but nothing beats a good scale.

...the problem with people these days is
they've forgotten we're really just animals ...
We did not create the web of life; we are but a strand in it.
We don't have souls. We ARE souls. We have bodies.
