Thank you every one! My burn is healing incredibly well! The doctor visit went amazing! I did ask my doctor about nutritional needs and everything and got some great advice!

For exercise, the doctor said that I can start running/working out again by Memorial Day weekend! Taking it slow and just doing the minimum of what I am capable of. Just taking it extra slow, make sure I bring water with me, and to use more elliptical machines to start out.

She said most of what you all posted about, which was just if I want to lose weight, do the portion control. And cutting out excess sugar (from ice cream, sodas, etc.) wont slow down the burns healing or anything. Keep eating lean proteins, good fats, low calories (I gave her my calorie range from sparkpeople and she said it should be fine but to double check again when I visit her Memorial Weekend again before I go to my Internship.) Thank you everyone!

If you guys have any other advice on tips for portion control when I do my internship, that is what I am really interested in! Since I know now that I can do some basic work outs!

Just to clarify...
My post indicated that weight loss may "not" be appropriate at present time.
A referral to a dietitian for a complete nutrition assessment would be needed to determine the eating and supplementation needs for the original poster who has a serious injury/burn. Burns require additional calories, protein, vitamins, minerals for healing to take place. The recommendations on this Sparkpeople site should not be used.

Even if you can't exercise or can't for a while, you can still lose weight with proper nutrition, see Becky's advice below.

This site, our experts, and our members can not give advice for your situation. It could be dangerous to your health and burn recovery.

Talk to your doctor and find out about what types and amount of exercise you can do daily.
Also talk to your doctor about your nutritional needs. You may want to ask for a referral to see a Registered Dietitian. You have a burn, which is a wound. For healing you need the appropriate amount of calories and protein and vitamins/minerals. This may not be the time for weight loss. A complete nutrition assessement would be needed to determine the correct eating plan (and nutrition supplement plan) for you at present time.

When I broke my leg a few years ago. I was told because of my weight that I would need to not walk on my leg for 6 weeks. So i Hobbled around with crutches and later a cane. I found that while I was injured, I actually ate a lot less because I didn't get up to go to the kitchen.

Not sure if this helps, but i did lose about 10 pounds.

When you visit your doctor please, ask his advice. Print out what you wrote and let him read it. He should be able to advise you on how much exercise you can do and when you can start.

When you are staying with your host family, practice portion control. There are several websites with information available, including this one. Offer to cook meals once or twice a week and make them healthy ones. Let your host family know what you can and cannot eat. I am sure they will ask you this anyway so be honest with them. They WANT you to enjoy your stay with them.

So I just got home and my goal this summer was to lose and keep off a few pounds! I was gonna keep my goal around 10-20 lbs. to lose this summer. I was setting up a running plan, and even a basic diet plan but then my summer changed drastically for several reasons.

1) First I landed an internship in another city (SCORE!) but I would be having to stay with a host family. I still don't know who they are yet, but I should find out in a few weeks. So as of now they are going to be feeding me and I don't know how healthy or unhealthy they eat at all. So some advice on portion control, snacks and so on would be great! Once I find out more I will definitely be posting to get more advice!

2) Second, and probably what I am more concerned with is that I received a huge and severe second degree burn on the back of my right thigh. It's from right bellow my bum area all the way down my leg. The severity of it ends around my knee, and then there's a couple minor burns on my calf. But with this severe burn I don't know now much exercise I can do because even standing long enough to do the dishes makes me want to go to bed! (I am seeing my doctor on Thursday May 9 to get more info.) But until my doctor gives me the ok, I probably wont be able to do very much exercise until mid to late June/early July.

I still really want to lose weight this summer! I know I can do it! I just need some advice, tips and challenges to try that I will be able to accomplish living away from home and with an injury! I got quite a few obstacles but I know I can do this! Any advice from you guys as to what I can be doing?
