Although it should be noted that what dietary guidelines refer to as a serving and what "eat reasonable portions" people refer to as a serving may not be the same thing. For instance, the guidelines to eat 10 servings or whatever of vegetables per day -- that sounds insane until you realize that each 'serving' is quite small and that each single instance of you eating vegetables in a day might consist of 2 or 3 servings, depending what it is.
Specifically regarding rice: as a near-vegetarian, 1/2 cup is sufficient for some meals but not for others -- it depends what else I'm eating and how much of it is grains (vegetarians require grains for some of their protein needs).
Kinda tangential, I know, just a pet peeve of mine as regards the whole concept of "servings" and how they are utilized.
