I fast a lot. Every saturday for religious reasons, then from time to time for health reasons.
Some fasts are long, some are short.
If you've never fasted before, don't go "a couple days". That will KILL YOU! (not literally of course).
Try a day, half a day, sun up to sun down, or something similar. Once your body gets accustomed to occasionally going without food for awhile, you can start doing longer fasts.
If you do have your heart set of a multiple day fast, ease into it. The shock of suddenly having no food will wreak havoc on your metabolism and hurt, rather than help, you mentally.
Go vegan for a day or two, then raw for a day or two, then (if you can make it that far! Some people can't! In which case DON'T FAST FOR MULTIPLE DAYS! It takes practice and you need to build up to it.) fast for two or three days.
AFTERWARDS DON'T JUMP BACK INTO REGULAR FOOD! Eat like you've been sick for a day (light foods, soup, etc) before going back to your regular diet.
