Great ideas.... I love Mexican food... but know it is often too caloric. One thing I often do is just order a bowl of soup for dinner.. albondigas, chicken tortilla, or whatever they have (though I avoid menudo... if I'm very hungry I also will have one a la carte taco or something. Occasionally we have a bit of a splurge wiht a shared cheese crisp. We automatically ask the waiter NOT to bring the chips, but to leave the salsa...
The other thing I avoid is the margarita.. often a Mexican restaurant margarita will have more calories than the meal!
I don't always avoid the beans/rice, though.... it's good nutrition if not prepared wtih lard.... and very filling. My daughter in law is from Mexico City and she taught me how to make very good refried beans, even out of the can.. add about a tablespoon of milk or Mexican crema as you heat them.. the gaseous effects are greatly reduced and they taste wonderful.
