Having a soup appetizer can be a good option. Unless they are cream based soup, which can pack 300-600 calories.

A side salad is about 150-200. And get the dressing on the side. Dip the tines of your fork in the dressing and then in your salad. That way you get the taste of dressing without a lot of calories. Since the salad dressing can pack 200 calories easily.

My tip: only go out on special occasions, and enjoy what you're eating. Most of the time, I find the healthy options are things that I already eat at home. I'd rather not pay $20 for something I can make at home for a fraction of the cost. I really don't worry about the calories when I go out to eat because I go out so rarely that I want to have something I enjoy and wouldn't normally have at home.

I still do avoid anything fried, creamy, smothered, etc.

The key is simple! Simple pieces of meat, very little or no sauce, non-carby sides. Decide in advance how much you're going to eat of the meal and stick with it.

I have a notebook with all of the places we go to eat and "Safe" items from each menu.

I make sure that I know where we are going in advance and plan ahead

If I find myself at a place I have never been to before, I usually order either a steak salad no french fries, no cheese and dressing on the side OR a small steak with a double side of steamed veggies.

Drink a lot of water throughout the day. When dehydrated, the body sends out hunger cues.

I usually try and visit their website ahead of time if it's a place I haven't been in awhile. I like to check their menu for available lighter options. Two of my favorites are Applebee's and Ruby Tuesday's. Olive Garden and Red Lobster also have lighter options.

I try to eat at restaurants that have nice looking lighter options. Some of the restaurants healthy options are nasty. I like Longhorn they have a Five hundred calorie menu that is pretty good.

My family wanted to go to Joes Crab Shack and they only have one option that is 700 so I was going to get that get a side salad. And get fries, but only eat a 1/4 to 1/2 of the fries. And 1/2 my entree.

My Spark Coach program brought up a good point today. Dining out is a big pitfall for weight loss. I'm trying to steer towards restaurants with healthier options (like going for a seafood place instead of pizza). I'm also discovering a lot of places now have smaller portion options and am aiming for those.

What is everyone else trying?
