I am a big time grazer especially in the afternoon when I'm home alone. No one sees me so it surely doesn't count, right? At night my husband I'd home so I behave myself and fix a healthy bedtime snack for us but no grazing. Marsha

I can do this!

There are several great suggestions here for us grazers. It just feels right to have that hand to mouth movement and I do it at night mostly.
I'm trying with the popcorn. The nuts got over the edge - I ended up eating the whole can in 2 nights. I like the idea about the cereal - I think I'll get some cheerios type to have on hand.

I love the puffy cereal idea, and your reference to being a puppy in a previous life fits me to a tee! I am scheduled for a upper endo procedure followed by a colonoscopy this week; and it is killing me to skip out on fresh fruits and veggies for the crunch factor in my daily diet. Chewy foods like italian for french breads are a must for me also, and I am seriously trying to cut back on the carbs. I agree that drinking water does not help. nor brushing my teeth. But the Listerine idea is a keeper, lol

I'm also a evening grazer - even shortly after eating a very filling dinner. emoticon I'll give the jello idea a try (although I doubt the pkg will last long). Cereal's a good suggestion, too -- especially in place of the "healthy" nuts that have gotten out of hand!! emoticon

The puffy cereal sounds like a good solution. I think snacking in the evening hours is the hardest trait to overcome -- it just seems so natural whether you are using the computer or watching shows on TV -- or visiting! Food always seems like the perfect accompaniment.
I have also found that sugar-free gelatin with a dab of fat-free cool whip is satisfying for me. And the calories you are consuming will never make or break your caloric count for the day.

I'm a complete boredom grazer! Drinking beverages never works for me - I must have been a puppy in a previous life because I need to chew something! I keep puffed wheat or puffed corn cereal on hand, for about 60 calories per cup. They're small "Finger Foods" so if I eat them piece by piece it feels like I'm continually snacking, but I'm not doing too much caloric damage. Also, because they're pretty bland tasting, it's a little easier to not overeat them. Brushing my teeth doesn't work for me either because I found that hmmm... light minty taste + chocolate = pretty darn yummy, so if I'm really toeing my calorie line, I find that rinsing my mouth with Listerine helps because NOTHING tastes good after Listerine.

Popcorn is a good evening snack if you're hungry. Healthy popped or air popped are both good choices. If you have the calories left in the evening, you can have 7.5 cups of airpopped popcorn!!

Grazing occurs...
Reword....
I graze when I am bored
I plan on grazing when I am at the store and I purchase things that are not a part of my plan
I do best when I dont have these foods
I am better than I once was ...but I can slip if I dont remain conscious!!!

Carve out what is most important to you first, then allocate your day to others! I promise you and they will be better for this decision!!

It's good to see that I'm not alone in this :) I too am a grazer; I tend to do pretty well until evening, then a combination of being tired and bored lead to lack of willpower and I hit the snacks

I will try some of the tips in this thread to improve. I like the idea of having a glass of water, it fills you up, gives you time to consider the ramifications of eating a snack AND hydrates.

water is a good idea - I have started making myself a cup of green tea so at least I am getting hydrated while I eat my 100th carrot stick...

I have done a good job replacing my grazing foods with healthier options, but I still graze. I don't like it - mindless eating seems like a bad idea no matter what food it is, and for me it is a way to combat boredom or restless hands while I am working (at the computer in particular). Does anybody have a strategy to limit grazing altogether? I work a lot from home and the food is always there...

I also am a grazer; it is probably my biggest struggle in my attempt to lose weight (and lack of exercise, I am lazy beyond words) I can control the amount of food I eat at a regular meal, but between meals I get bored (?) and to the kitchen I go. I try to have healthy snacks, yogurt, cheese strings, nuts, but I want M & M's, potato chips, and Cheez-its (they are my main weakness) I am ashamed of myself and then refuse to post my food intake so i don't have to look my failure in print every day. I want to change, but just have not reached the level where I am motivated to set a serious goal and make a dedicated attempt to reach it. emoticon

Grazing is good as long as you stay within your allotted calories. Save your fruit or even piece of pie (small) for your snack/grazing in between meals. Be sure to drink your water.

When I pick up something at the store I know I'll sit and mindlessly eat (I'm looking at you, salty & crunchy stuff), I get out the food scale and little plastic snack bags and pre-portion the whole container, then put the baggies in a clear plastic shoebox in the pantry. Then I can grab a single portion and snack on it, knowing exactly how much I'm eating. When the baggie is empty, I can consciously decide if I'm still hungry and give myself an option of getting a healthier snack, like a piece of fruit.

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Like Snowyoga my biggest grazing happens when I am stressed out. I have stopped carrying a lot of change around with me so I don't find myself in front of the vending machine at work. Fritos are my downfall.

am not a grazer maybe i should learn too.............

“There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.”

Your message 'not a grazer' just caught my eye. I joined sparkpeople back in January of this year and believe it or not you are the first person I am sending a message to. Oh lucky you - just kidding :) I noticed your other line - ' a peaceful heart leads to a peaceful body' or something close to that, I don't have it right in front of me. I totally agree with that message and what a neat way of saying it. The only times I start to 'graze' is when I am feeling stressful and something is definitely out of wack. Then, when I looked at your goals I could not help but notice how similar they are to mine. I am not sure if you will see them because I really did not know what I was doing when I set up my profile or whatever it is you set up to send messages.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi to you and let's keep on spark'in! :)

When I get bored I want to graze -- at work or home. I don't have the greatest will power so I have just gotten rid of any extra food at work (I bring my lunch and 1 snack) and have no junk at home. When I get "hungry" I know I'll have to actually make something so I will just go fix a cup of hot tea and it works!

I am an evening grazer because I am bored and watching tv. So I have tried to only keep healthy snacks on hand - and no diet soda! That was my crutch, I think it made me hungry. So now I am drinking herbal tea and eating carrot sticks. Slowly but surely I will get there.

Evenings are worse for me, but I'm doing better lately. I try not to graze at night, but know that there are going to be times when my willpower fails me, so try to have safe choices available. I like decaf coffee or tea, herbal or green teas are nice. When I feel like I just have to have something to chew on I usually make popcorn. Not the microwave stuff that comes in the bags full of unhealthy stuff, but plain old popcorn. I pop it in lunch bags in the microwave, but without oil or salt or any of those other additives. Then I spray it lightly with Pam or an equivalent, and sprinkle with either sea salt, cinnamon, parm cheese, or any herbs or spices that appeal to me at the time.

I give myself a time limit between grazing and a list of things that I can graze on. No less than 2 hours between grazing and it must be 1 serving of nuts, fruit, crackers and cheese and it must be accompanied with water or tea.

I just want to eat and eat and eat, it's ridiculous! Sometimes i know what i am doing but when i'm done stuffing my face, I'm like what just happened, why did i do that !

My grazing is also a nightly thing. I am doing better...last night I had some rice cakes and an orange. Determined to grab the fruit rather than the chips and whatever else I can get my hands on. Of course, once a month it's worse... lol

I've found that if I feel like grazing, drinking a full glass of water first will usually remind me that I am not really hungry.

My biggest grazing time is at night when I am bored and alone. Now when I start to feel myself gravitating toward the fridge I get a class of water, think about if I'm really hungry, and then wait ten more minutes. Taking the time to really think about it usually makes me realize nope I don't need anything, just need to find something else to take my mind away from food.
