One thing that has helped me a great deal is to have fresh vegetables cut up and in sandwich bags. I grab one and put it in my purse, the veggies usually hold up even when they reach room temperature. Orange, Yellow or Red Bell Peppers, broccoli, and celery. I also keep a couple of cuties(clementines) handy as well. Low fat mozarella cheese sticks too for protein and almonds! I know you can't have those. It has helped to bring these things with me to work everyday, so when I do feel myself getting hungry, I am prepared and not as tempted to hit the vending machines! I have had to make a habit of being prepared. Good Luck to you!!

When I'm running from one place to the other and know I won't have a sit-down meal, I carry an apple with me in the car, and a couple sheets of paper towel (in case it's really juicy). It will hold up in heat or cold for just a few hours, if necessary, and not too messy if I have to eat it in the car. Fits nice in the extra cup holder. I also pack a high-protien bar if I know I'm going to miss a meal. If it's very warm weather I try to bring non-sticky snacks. 100 calorie snack packs work. I'm sure not to bring more than that so I'm not tempted to 'finish'.(It's easy for me to binge in uncontrolled situations.) Don't carry more than you'll need. Don't keep boxes of snacks in your car. I always have 2-3 bottles of water with me. I always have gum in my car.

Now that I am retired, this is something I do not do regularly. But come to think of it, on the days I go from the gym to running errands or grocery shopping I definitely need an emergency kit so I don't get so hungry that I give in to temptation of an unhealthy snack. I will admit to thinking about stopping for "fast food", made the choice to wait until I get home. Have started carrying water with me all the time. Never know when the opportunity will present itself to go for a walk.

Almonds or soynuts, dried cherries or apricots, water...these can usually get me to drive past the FF places "unharmed."

I always try to eat before i go out and im not usually gone long enough to worry about it. But on days i know i will be gone awhile i like to take water, apples, and a flax muffin. If im in our closest city and I have nothing with me i go to our local sobys grocery store and get something there, its my new "fast" food place cause they always have hard boiled eggs(2pk) and single cheese sticks, can even get any kind of deli protien although i try not to eat deli too much. even a couple pieces of there fried chicken is good! i know, i know fried is not good! but it is only once in a blue moon and i eat mostly paleo so its ok for me!

There is a bag of almonds and a couple of 100 cal boxes of raisins in my car. I need to add some protein bars, as I have been taking 3-4 mile walks with my dogs at a new off leash park. I find myself quite hungry afterwards. My work locker has a can of healthy choice soup, a box of chocolate teddy grams ( 12 cookies,60 wonderful chocolate calories) and some fruit leather.

I laughed when my boyfriend said this 2 years ago - I now always have granola bars, often apples and always water. In the summer, more fruit (in season).

I carry two apples and a jug of water around with me.... PEOPLE are always gawking LOL... I finally down sized my jug to a cute BUT big water bottle especially when I'm out.

Plan for the emergency to happen every day. When I have time, I cut up fruit or veggies (or both) and toss them in a tupperware. Amazing how tempting a tupperware full of fruit can be! If I don't have time, I always toss a few pieces of fruit in a bag. Bring an old plastic grocery bag and peel the orange inside it. Toss 2 halves of a kiwi and a disposable spoon into a ziplock. Eat an apple every day. Try the newer varieties. I find new favorites every year.

I live in FL and I find I can't just leave my "kit" in the car. Everything would melt or cook or spoil. But I never go anywhere without water, an apple or banana, and one of my one ounce zippy snack bags of nuts when I'm running errands. For longer trips I pack a small insulated bag and add almond butter on bread fingers with homemade flavored yogurt. I usually add cocoa and whatever sweetener my plan allows that day. I'll be doing that Wednesday when we travel 80 miles to go to Trader Joes and a great spice shop. But the interesting thing here for me is you all made me think about my hurricane kit. I usually start planning the food for that in April and buy the non-perishables in May so it's ready to go north if there's time to evacuate or take to the shelter if there isn't. So I think I will have difficulty making the food box this year, since I have changed my eating patterns so drastically. Hardly any processed food. Mostly fruits and vegetables. Velveeta Cheese and crackers, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese in meals ready to eat, a pan of brownies, and a loaf of bread just isn't gong to work this year. A Hurricane Party could definitely set my food plan on its ear.

I can't imagine living in a city--where I'd need an "emergency kit" to survive the long drives. Even if I drive all the way across town, it's only 15 minutes.... Sometimes I carry a granola bar if I know I'll be out when it's mealtime...but mostly I only pack foods if we're going on a trip (like 250 miles or more)....

I have two kits - one in my purse and one that stays in my car permanently and is rotated out monthly.
In my purse I have a BGL meter and spare strips and lancets, a film canister I use for sharps, jelly beans and honey packets for instant carb hits and low gi granola bars for long acting carbs. I also have a bright red lmainated business card with my medical info on one side and emergency contacts on the other - one in my phone, one in my wallet and one loose in my purse. I don't carry snacks for snacking sake, only for BGL issues. I also have a mini alcohol hand gel and a travel pack of wet wipes and a ziploc baggie for waste. I also make sure to have my two open insulin pens and two spares (one each of long and rapid acting) which is generally enough for several days.
In my car I have a larger supply of jelly beans and honey packets, as well as another meter, spare strips and spare batteries, a bigger sharps container, wet wipes and alcohol gel, a container of needletips, a small amount of my current medications and pain relievers (aside from what is in my full first aid kit under the seat), a full box of granola bars and my emergency details again. I also carry a small torch just in case it's dark and I am not capable of putting keys in the ignition.
I don't keep insulin in the car, but I carry it with me wherever I go, just in case.
I like some of the suggestions to keep a protein source in the car as well as carbohydrates, along with canned fruit - I think I shall be adding canned baked beans, tuna and canned fruit to a small box in my car. Thanks to all who said they keep these things in their cars :)

I love the idea of a cooler in the trunk
|
|
|
 |
I keep a very small size cooler in the back floor board if I know that I will be out for a few hours. This will keep a few water bottle, nuts, and my favorite and life saver, Clif bars. Depending on weather around here I keep hard candy it as well in a separate little baggie. In the trunk, I keep a plastic container for other items such as flashlight, batteries, candles, extra USB cord for phone, and blankets, orange vest, more water, paper and pen along with hard copy of everyone's addresses and phone numbers. I try to find small cans of fruit with pull tabs to include but I still have a campers can opener and matches.
Exercise has many psychological benefits including renewed confidence and self esteem.

I always have fresh fruit around, I have granola bars, almond butter, trail mix and iced water. I try not to make sweets at all because I really have no self-control when it comes to them.

I keep a can of tuna and a baggie of instant oatmeal at work. If I need some protein, I can eat the tuna. If I'm just snackish, I look at the bag of oatmeal. If I am hungry enough to want to eat it, I do. If it looks gross, I know I am not really hungry, and get some herb tea instead (which I always keep a few assorted bags in my drawer).

I endeavor to pack a motivating thought in my pocket before I leave the house each day. The idea that I always have to have food on my person as an "emergency" doesn't support my personal overeating issues. That said, I do keep healthy snacks in my desk drawer at work to keep me from reaching into the candy dish that a nearby coworker feels its her duty to keep ever full. Peanuts in the shell are great for releasing frustration and administrative angst.
Grace - it's not just for breakfast any more.

Hmm well I don't have an emergency kit, but I always do keep a snack with me. In my purse I have sugar free gum, a Lara bar, and a granola bar for the kiddo. And I always take a water bottle with me wherever I go.
Motivation Mantra: If you’re walking down a set of stairs and you slip on a stair, you get up and continue your walk down. You would never get up and then throw yourself down the rest of the stairs. If you've "fallen" lately, now's the time to get up, forgive yourself, and move on!

I keep small containers of dates, prunes, celery, walnuts, raw almonds, sunflower seeds, craisins in an emergency zip lock. I don't mix these things though since it makes it harder to calculate when I get to the computer. So far I;ve planned out my meals so I haven't had to dip into this system very much. Oh and I usually have a Larabar in my purse. I've not had to 'borrow' it yet though! I've found that my SIGG bottle or Tervis Tumbler is in the car most of the time, so I'll keep it filled with water.

Some kind of low sugar protein bar and water..... always in my purse or car. Sometimes I suck on a sugar free menthol cough drop if my cravings are really bad. That really makes me think twice about eating anything!

I keep food stashed in my car and at my desk at all times because there are days when my appetite roars beyond belief or I'm stuck in traffic. At work, I keep 1-2 fruits. In the car during the cool months, I keep nuts mixed with chocolate chips & dried fruit plus apples. In my car during the hot months, I keep something non-perishable like granola bars or Target's packaged fruit snacks because of the intense heat. This spring & summer, I'm going to see how bananas, nuts and apples handle the intense heat.

I loved all the suggestions, just got finished packing my car. I now have waters, meds, crackers, granola bars, extra clothes for the kids, trash bags, kotex, toothbrushes, aspirin, sweatshirts, tea bags and cocoa packets. I have a compartment in the back underneath that I sometimes forget is even there. I now feel prepared for long trips with my kids and in the event of an emergency. I usually pack a bag lunch to avoid the temptations of drive thrus. Canned tuna and crakcers and fruit. This works both ways. Thanks everyone for your ideas!

It never occurred to me either, BREEFAITH16, until I got caught in the Carmageddon snowstorm in January 2011 (the winter after just being diagnosed with borderline diabetes) and found myself stuck in the car for 9.5 hours with a 1-oz. cheese stick, a 3-oz. pack of baby carrots, 2 hard candies, and a 16-oz mug of water. Fortunately, I also have what my mother terms "a whim of iron," when I really need it.

Great ideas here! Personally, I'm loving the new stuff from Special K, including their cracker chips and pastry bars. The 100 calorie snack pacs are godsends! My weakness is the salty snacks, while my husband is much more likely to search out the sweets. Ann

Great question - and lots of good ideas in the responses! I try to make sure there's a bottle of water in my car at all times, as well as some unsalted nuts and a SoyJoy bar. If I'm going on a trip by car, I also make sure to have fresh fruit and veggies in a small cooler. That way, I'm not tempted to pick up high-salt, high-fat snacks when I stop for gas!

an emergency kit!? crazy awesome idea! sometimes when I am feeling hungry, I will grab a granola bar or piece of fruit when I have to run out the door and ALWAYS grab one for the kids because they are less likely to ask for all the chocolate stuff at the check out lines...

I keep a clif bar in the car and another protein bar in the diaper bag. I also will grab almonds and a fruit/veg juice pak if I am doing errands, and my water bottle always goes in the car with me!

I keep a cup that I can refill with water, rather than a bottle. I used to keep a nuts and granola mix but I see that I am out. Time to restock the gym back. I have found that after hours in the gym I am famished and need something. There is a food bar there so I could get something there, but I am always scared of a big calories mistake.

So far my emergency kit depends on how long I am going to be gone. I try to take water with me at the minimum. And medications since that is 3x per day. I want to add snacks and have taken shakes with me in a thermos on occasion. However, this emergency kit idea is something I'd like to do and also need simple ideas. I also have little bags of nuts but haven't packed them in the emergency kit yet. But, I may after reading this "great" topic. I'm learning a lot from everybody else's replies!!!
