Big people need more than smaller people.
Men need more than women.
Physically active people need more than sedentary.
Given that you are big, a man, and active, then I would certainly think that SP is accurate!
Your experience with Atkins was a quick loss. You also experienced regaining the weight. This is what often happens with Diets and/or quick losses.
SP provides excellent advice for how to go about the changes. The slower losses are better - they are more like to stay off, and is a lot healthier on our body, too!
Most people, if they have recorded their planned exercise accurately, are totally honest with their food, and weigh it for increased accuracy, will find that SP ranges are excellent,
Remember, this isn't the fastest loser who wins - it is the one who plods along steadily!
