It can, but not in the way you think.
If you are replacing calorie-laden sodas or juices (or other caloric beverages) then yes, hot tea can help you lose weight. It isn't anything about the tea itself, rather it's the reduce calories. If you use any kind of caloric sweetener like honey, remember to track it, or it can add up and sabotage your efforts.
However, I've found that personally, drinking a cup of tea when I have the munchies helps fight cravings. Often, it appeases that "boredom eating" impulse. It also keeps me well hydrated (seriously, I drink so much tea I often pee clear!)
