I prefer cooking the oats with water only, and then putting milk (and sugar) on top when serving.

Yep - I do it all the time except I use half coconut milk and half water. It makes the oats really creamy and they taste better too.

I tried steel cut oats for the first time this morning (and it was really good!) The recipe (for the only steel cut oats I could find in the store) calls for 1 1/2 cups water or milk. I like to use milk in my oatmeal but when I put them into my nutrition tracker, the oats/skim milk/OJ (have to have it daily for iron problems) combination took up 400 calories! I try to keep breakfast at 300 calories. Has anybody ever tried a combination of milk/water (maybe 50/50 or 1 cup milk and 1/2 cup water)? Does it work?
