I unfortunately live out of my car. I eat a lot of apples, carrots, celery and bananas. I also make 1 tbsp. peanut butter sandwiches (no jam) on whole wheat or rye and whole wheat. I take a 20 ounce container of premade iced tea with me into school or work and have another one out in the car when the first one is empty. In case I am starving later, there are always a few F-factor bars (which being high fiber, I won't overeat in case of embarrassing side effects!) and Kashi cereal mixed with peanuts like a lower calorie trail mix in the car. If I have to stay overnight, I use grocery stores rather than restaurants because then I know what I am getting if I make something up myself. I don't take anything that needs dishes or utensils because then I'd just have to deal with cleanup. I do save my apple cores for my chickens, though, if I'll be back within 24 hours. I just put them in my sandwich baggie. I'm a good chicken mama! :)

Well, today, I'm going to lunch with my SparkTeam here in Indiana. We're going to Red Lobster. So, I went to the website last night to pre-plan my meal for today. Now, I have my plan and my meal tracked on SparkPeople. Sometimes, you have to plan things out. One of my favorite quotes holds true in my life: Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail!

I find it helpful to leave sunflower seeds or pistachios in my car at all times. Nuts still in the shell are best, they prevent over eating. My other favorite on the go snacks are bananas and clementines. I also like to throw some popcorn kernels in a brown lunch bag if I know there will be a microwave and always bring a water bottle.

I take 100 calorie pack almonds and a low fat cheese stick with me to have after the gym. That and my bottle of water keeps me going while I'm running errands until I can get home and have lunch. This helps me from having mall food while I'm out.

I have recently discovered these lunchables Jr. packs with mini Ritz, cheese and protein like turkey or ham. They are only about 150 calories and the protein in them really helps me to get moving, with just enough carbs to keep my blood sugar from tanking. I usually try to eat one of these with some small fruit instead of eating at a restaurant when I can.

RHUYCKE241 -- is there a health food store near you? Most of them have ready-to-eat food options that are tons, tons healthier than you can find pretty much anywhere else, and you can probably ask for calorie information if you need that. Generally all the ingredients are listed, so if there's anything in particular that sets you off, you could avoid it. This is where/how we generally eat when we're randomly out around meal time and too hungry to go home first.

Keeping it simple works for me. I have a food grouping already made up in my food selection of a salad with a protein (hard boiled egg, chicken, tuna or salmon). I have walnuts and a light dressing. It helps me to have a similar lunch everyday. I am trying to be responsible to record my food and I think it helps to have the food grouping already made up to go to quickly and record.

You just can't go wrong with lightly spread PB&J on whole wheat, barring any allergies, of course. It is cheap, filling and nutritious but should not be consumed every day or in addition to much of anything, as the calories per tablespoon are somewhat high. And it doesn't even need refrigeration. Go with the natural-type blends to save on sugar also. -Frank

I used to travel every week for business and often stayed at Hampton Inns. Almost everything there except for milk and bananas are processed. Bring your own oatmeal, add milk and a banana, and you're set. The only fast food restaurant I go to is Subway. Good luck!

I have a variety of containers to bring along water. This has been a very key part of busy Saturdays. Pecans, almonds, cashews in small containers. Also dried carnberries mixed with dried edamame, peanut butter sandwhich, Cracker Creations by Lance, Clif bars, jerky, Emerald Brekfast On-the-Go packs (mixtures of nuts and other stuff).

Even just for a day of errands, I keep protein bars (Clif is great), snack baggies of almonds, cut up fruit, juice paks (pure fruit veg ones) in my purse or car. In the winter is especially great because a pre-bottled protein shake, or even cheese, sandwiches, stay cold enough in the car! Even if you can't get to a "healthy" fast food place, take some time to peruse the online menus/nutrition guides of where may be available like McDs. Knowledge is power!

I eat on the go nearly every day. I often toss a Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt in my bag for the protein, or beef jerky. One of those and a couple of pieces of fruit and I'm good for several hours. Another thing I go for is the Louis Kemp crab delights. You can even buy it in a container with three individual servings. If you're staying at a hotel that has a complimentary breakfast, there is usually fresh fruit out. I usually grab a piece for later.

The way I stay healthy on the go is always making extra servings when I cook. That way I always have something to take with me to work or wherever I'm going! If you're not sure what to cook, I've got some awesome healthy recipes on my blog that are also delicious! Everyone loves them, including my picky boyfriend! mysantamonicalife.wordpress.com Hope you like my blog =] Thanks!

These are some great ideas. I work approximately 4.5 hours from where I live so I do a lot of traveling back and forth (NOT every day). But I do have a problem with those hours in the car drving from my work to my home, which is usually runs over the dinner hour. The trip back down to work is usually over the lunch hour. Planning ahead and having these snacks on hand is going to be a boon to my 'Get Healthy' campaign!!
Stay motivated by setting smaller, obtainable goals. Starting weight - 250 1 - 230 lbs - DONE!! And ahead of schedule. 2 - 210 lbs 3 - 190 lbs 4 - 170 lbs 5 - 150 lbs Make these other goals habits: - Healthy, mindful eating - Walking at least 5 miles a week - Strengthen training at least 3 times a week

I was a hockey mom forever, so I totally get where any anxiety would come from. here is what I did: breakfast at the hotel, I would grab yogurt and some extra fruit. Instead of lingering I'd go get the equipment ready, pack the car, etc. Lunch if we were on our own, I would bring isagenix. What I liked about isagenix is that it is a great protein shake that you can mix with water. If we were with the team, I would do a salad (I'd order in whole sentences: light on the cheese, dressing on the side). For dinner I would do something grilled and substitute french fries with steamed veggies. I am not a big drinker anyways, so I would have a diet coke and go to the room and hang out with my son before bed.

Wow! So many great ideas on here. Thank you so much everyone. Just to follow up, I wanted to report that not only did I manage to keep on track, this is the first weekend away that I haven't gained after. Stepped on the scale and I was right where I was on Thursday and that is indeed an accomplishment for me. Thanks to you guys, here's what kept me going: hotel continental breakfast included, plain oatmeal and milk (brought my chia and all bran buds to add to it), eggs and black green tea Took lots of snacks to the rinks with me such as laughing cow cheese, oranges, almonds, protein shake, hard boiled eggs and bought only water or tea at the canteens. In the hotel we had our own meals. I took some ww pitas, pre-cooked chicken breasts, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, fruit and when the family ordered pizza, it came with a bunch of salads with dressing on the side and I just jacked all the veggies for my pita wraps. I only realize that my freggie count was lacking, but I was never hungry and didn't need to give in to unhealthy fast food options. Yay me and yay you guys for all the suggestions.

All great ideas; I love SparkPeople! Some of my favs: Grape tomatoes, jarred olives, sliced deli meat (Trader Joe's - no nitrites/nitrates) - protein, good fat, & a live food Pre-cooked Sweet potatoes in their skins - really good carb. Just wash, poke holes, leave wet, rub with some extra virgin olive oil (optional - keeps skin REALY soft, but not necessary), microwave till done (don't overcook); let cool. Gets even sweeter when cooled, in my opinion.

If I don't have anything in the house that is ready to go and I am on the run, I go to Subway for a sub off the fresh fit menu. This way I avoid the fast foods and still eat healthy. If you can't get away to get something, you could always make lettuce wraps or just take some turkey breast, or cottage cheese cups, yogurt cups, etc.

bagels. super-durable, don't get squished or go stale, very filling. i too go on "tournament weekends" and this is a staple that i put in the hotel room mini fridge. bagels, cream cheese or peanut butter, and apples. (half bagel, 1/2 tbsp pb, and a layer of thinly sliced apples makes a very good easy breakfast or snack). you could also pack a couple of those mini cans of pre-mixed tuna. instant oatmeal. packs easily in your purse, and any place you can get hot water (or have access to a microwave), you can just make this up in a mug (or styrofoam coffee cup, if you are stuck at the arena).

I'm heading out for a sports tournament weekend at the rinks and hotel with my family this weekend and want to maintain all the progress that I've been making lately, but struggle a bit with packing nutritious, travel-friendly meals and snacks, particularly protein. I'm trying to limit my wheat intake and am not all that crazy about raw veggies. Any ideas for things that I can prepare and pack ahead of time to have one hand when I'm stuck at the rink and can't get to a Subway or other healthy option?
