thanks for the replies! I am type 2 diabetic. I have been wanting to try almond milk & I will now for sure. I looked it up & for 1 cup of unsweetend it was only 30 calories & 1 carb! wow. Where as the milk is 80+ calories & heavy on the carbs & sugars. That will make a big difference. I will try avocado too. I never thought about adding one before. I think i will also switch to a different brand of yogurt. Thanks so much!

you might try using parts of cucumber, tofu, and/or avocado in your smoothie to help the carb count.

I use no dairy whatsoever. to make them creamy I may add in some nutbutter or a handful of cashews or if i feel like it avocado. But I usually use 1/2 banana, 1 cup of berries, a pinch of cinnamon, a large handful or two of greens (could be all one or a mixture of collards, cilantro, mint, romaine, spring mix, spinach, chard, broccoli, carrots, cucumber, celery, etc). Sometimes I will use homemade almond milk but mostly just filtered water.

I work at a raw juice and smoothie store, so I've calculated smoothie calories sooo many times. Assuming you really want yogurt in it, I'm going to calculate it with yogurt... I would use 8oz of greens juice (Evolution Fresh Essential Greens is awesome, or any plain greens juice, about 20 calories) OR 8 oz of unsweetened almond milk (40 calories and soo creamy) 1/4 c nonfat greek yogurt (32 cal) 2/3 c strawberries (28 cal) 1/3 c sliced, frozen bananas (45 cal) 1/2 c ice
Makes 16oz smoothie, blends perfectly, and less than 150 calories :)

Hi, I love smoothies!! My first question is are you a type 1 or type 2 diabetic? Yes, bananas are high in carb, but remember not all carbs are created equal. We need carbs, they fuel the body. I use plain vanilla yogurt, with probiatics 1 cup = 140 cal, 27 carb, 22 sugar, 7 protien Half a cup skim milk This is my base... Then I add frozen berries, maybe some Kefir and after a workout I add protien powder. If you want a good alternative to adding veggies to your diet, try Shakeology. It is a smoothie style superfood drink. It comes in several different flavors. This is available online, or you can find a friend who distributes. I am waiting for mine to come....

I LOVE smoothies & drink one every single day for breakfast or a snack. But i finally counted out the calories and ouch :( It isn't super high for a breakfast but too high for a snack. What is worse are the carbs!! Calories-339 Carbs- 66 Prot- 19 I make it with 1 cup of skim milk, 1 cup of spinach, 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries, 1 banana, 1/2 cup greek yogurt. I'd like to make it smaller because it is huge but I usually end up adding more milk to get it going in the blender. I will try to cut everything in half maybe and see. Plus the banana is insane high in carbs I might just cut it out completely. But I would love to hear your opinions or smoothie recipes that have way lower carbs? *I am diabetic btw
