Nothing you eat immediately before a workout will fuel that workout. Digestion takes hours.
However, if you're feeling odd with the gnawing empty stomach, anything you put in first will help with that. Whatever YOU like.
A piece of fruit, a smoothie, some toast, crackers, a glass of milk. Absolutely anything that fits in your diet plan.
There isn't a "best to eat immediately before workout" because of that whole digestion thing - it takes hours for what you eat to be turned into usable energy anyway.
