MERRYBETH1 I have cycled on and off the Plan for over a year. I have 20 pounds to lose. I would have a quick loss of 3-4 pounds the first couple days, then stall and even gain on previously friendly foods! That's when I would get discouraged and try something else. After the holidays I had gained weight again. I decided to work with a Plan nutritionist for 30 days at a cost of $400.00. I envisioned losing .5 pounds a day being healthy and slim and wearing all the clothes that had hung in my closet for years. Unfortunately the only loss was in my pocketbook. I started out great losing 5 pounds the first week! I continued staying the course and my weight would fluctuate by 2 pounds for the next 15 days. The nutritionist would question if I drank water at the wrong time or if the veggies were cooked or raw or did I drink coffee too late in the day etc. I was getting so frustrated. How do you gain weight on water and previously friendly foods? I could never introduce friendly foods because my body was in a constant state of "inflammation". I questioned how I could lose weight on 5 tbsp of olive oil, nuts, seeds and cheese a day? I was told to trust in her advice and carry on.. Finally after 21 days with a total loss of 3 pounds (whoopee) I threw in the towel. I returned to using Spark, tracked the correct percentages of fat, protein and carbs and lost 4 more pounds. For me, the Plan was making me paranoid about every morsel I put in my mouth. It was very difficult in social situations and just plain monotonous. That's my story. I wish everyone more success than I had.

I am so glad I found this page. I am 53 and am finding that my body has been steadily GAINING weight through menopause. ARGH!!!! No matter what diet I have gone on, my body seems to think once I am on it, I am starving, so my metabolism slows down and then I gain weight if I eat anything normal.

Then I read The Plan. I started The Plan 9 days ago, hoping to give my body a long-term solution. It all seemed to make sense. After the first 3 days, I lost 3.5 pounds which was pretty encouraging. Then over the next few days, I lost a half pound, then stalled. And then another half pound and then stalled. Slowly but surely, I made it to 6 pounds so far.

Anyway, my weight has stayed the same for the past two days now. I was getting a bit discouraged until I watched a documentary yesterday that will keep me committed 100%. It was by far the most inspiring movie. It's called "HUNGRY FOR CHANGE". I found it on Netflix.

Hopefully, The Plan is the answer. If so, I will be sharing it with all my friends.

Yes Mftaylor. I want to do day 1 to 3. tP suggest doing those at the start of every season for that season to reset your body.

The last few days my weight has really gone up with the furlough no wonder. Boyfriend and I both will be out of work till they call us back. Oh well I will be home for my three days. At least weather still nice

Hey Lorac67,
I know what you mean, pretty much went off the Plan for the weekend but want to start again tomorrow. Just wondering, do I just have a rest day and then continue on?

Thanks all, I have been doing really well I think. Today is day 7 for me and only gained this morning, after the rye test. So doing rest day today. Had an extra rest day a couple of days ago as well because I think I may be reactive to the roasted veggies, didn't gain weight but had stomach issues and only lost 0.2 lb. I have lost almost 6 lbs now, which is great for me. I have been tracking and blogging and so far so good.

Hey Michelle,

I added cranberries and raisins from the start. No problem. I'd say cross that bridge when you come to it. It is rare that people gain the first 3 days ( foods are in the 10% reactive only range).

Hi all, I am starting this plan this week. I am very hopeful that this will be just what I needed. I bought the book and read it all in an evening and could relate with so much of what she discussed. I am very eager to get started but am a little worried about the initial 3 day cleanse portion. I hope I don't find too hard with feeling sick but in general I feel sick most days whenever I eat anything now it seems. Just a few questions before I get started. I am going to make my own flax seed granola, can I add raisins and/or cranberries right away or should I wait until after they are tested? Also, if I gain weight within those 1st 3 days then do you include rest-days or just get through until the test phase? I'm worried that I may gain initially and then not know what I can eat or what I should omit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Michelle

I've been doing the plan for over 40 days. I'm shocked to have not lost more weight (down five today after an increase yesterday) BUT, my BP is now pretty normal off do meds (been on meds 10 years and tried all kinds of things to get off...never lasted 3 days. My bmi is normal but high end of normal. My husband has lost a lot in same time frame (he had a lt to lose). I too get bored with the foods but am SO motivated. I also really love these healthy foods in a new and exciting way. Good to find more folks to chat with because it is pretty consuming (its a big change in eating patterns for me). Hi to all.

Hi WhiteFeather,

Can you send a link to the Facebook group? I can't find it when I searched but it sounds perfect for me.

I'm quickly growing bored, bored of the meals. I really hope this rye test mostly because I need to start introducing new foods fast. If I could just get one more protein in the rotation, I might survive. Ironically, the flax cereal is my favorite part - oh, and the chocolate. :)

Any alternative "rest day" soup recipes would be god's send.

Hi Kathy - I know, right? The high volume of water part really turned me off. I'll say this - I drink 90 oz of water per day and it really doesn't feel like a big deal now and I'm only a week in. I actually really enjoy it though I would say you might want to work up to it. According to this site, chances of too much water intake is minimal: http://chemistry.about.com/cs/5/f/blwaterintox.htm

Good luck!

I did great on the first 3 days of the plan, lost almost 5 pounds and felt wonderful. I ate some chickpeas in the spicy cocoa soup (day 3 of Thyroid Menu), but still lost over a pound. I reacted badly to both the hummus (made from chickpeas on day 4) and rye crackers on day 5. Stomach ache, bloating etc. Does this mean I have to start over on days 1-3? I am trying to follow the plan menus exactly in the order they are presented. Also, does this mean I need to find a substitute when hummus and rye crackers are listed in later days of the plan?

Any information would be helpful if you have experienced this already.

Hi
I would love to chat with anyone that is in a similar position to me. I have stage 4 endometriosis and am scheduled for the excision surgery in September. My awesome husband just bought me "The Plan" and I am excited to start it. My hormones are horribly "out of whack" due to my endo. Should I wait to start The Plan after I have my surgery to get the full benefit? I am 23 and weigh anywhere from 140 to 150 depending on the day! My goal weight is around 110 since I am 5'2". I would LOVE to talk with some folks that have done the plan and get some tips!! I have tried ALL the weight loss diets out there to no avail! I am excited to try this Plan because it makes perfect sense to me. I can eat chocolate one day and lose weight and eat a salad the next day and gain 5 pounds! Sorry I know this a long post but just wanted to give a bit of background since I am new here. Again ALL responses are so welcome!!

I plan to start the "Plan" next week. I weigh about 240 lbs, so do I really have to drink almost a gallon of water? I can't even fathom that. It doesn't sound healthy to do. Any thoughts? Encouragement?

The only things can tell I have reacted to is endives - slightly, english muffins and steak -slightly.
I have tested most things I am not up to 40 or 50 though.
I am hoping to drop into the 120s and stay this week. I did 2 proteins no trouble. I did eggs and two proteins. I reacted some not alot but I did react.

I didn't put anything on my carrot beet salad I just ate it as is. I dislike beets but with the carrots I couldn't taste it.
I am on day 11 and I have lost over 9 lbs I am thrilled.

Hiya to all :)
I just bought the plan- and am going shopping for the first 3 days.. I did have a couple of questions tho... If any one knows , I would be grateful ..
The granola ... Do I add the cranberries and raisins to start? I know you test the almonds on day two sooo I got that part...
And the broccoli is ok to eat as long as its cooked... Because it was on that no eat list..?
May I put anything on my carrot/ beet salad..? Olive oil and lemon.. Or do you need to?
Thank you so much!

I joined a group called Doing The Plan - which is a lovely/lively supportive group of ppl who are either doing TP as is meant by the book &/or 'Doing' TP ( their way) meaning take what works for them and add whatever else works for them. You might find helpful info! Some of the folks have also had private sessions with Cindy & others. Sometimes the posts are off topic but all in good fun and as complicated as I find TP a little levity goes a long way!

I am on Day 4 down 4.2 pounds so excited. Nothing reactive that I can tell so far. My basel temp is still 96.0-96.4 though no higher. Not sure if it will come up or not.

Not sure what to substitute on that one. Sorry.

I have always disliked beets and raw carrots but now eating them and liking them.

I'm on day 5, 2.8 pounds lost. I too have always hated beets (taste like dirt). But my husband suggested trying orange beets which are milder in the carrot beet salad. Drizzled the salad with orange oil and I liked it! Good luck!

you can replace with collard greens. can you eat kale? You want to sub a vegetable that has a fair bit of protein.

I've gained weight, gotten an instant headache, had major reflux AND had my basal temp dip back into the 94° range THREE times now after a day that called for broccoli. I've asked on another thread, but I'll ask here too: What ELSE can I use on a day's plan that includes broccoli w/o upsetting the nutritional chemistry/balance for that day? When Cindy was still answering individual emails, she told what I could switch out for spinach (deathly allergic to it) and it was VERY specific alternatives. Anyone know what broccoli's switch out would be once its proven reactive?

Thanks in advance.

~Mer

I am currently using the thyroid version of the Plan & have made an unpleasant discovery: I am reacting to one of my favorite veggies: broccoli.

I always knew that eating it RAW made for an upset stomach, gas, reflux, etc--it is a real revelation that even cooked, it is not being good to me. :'( The instant headache and heartburn effect has finally made it obvious. (Amazing what *listening* to ones body can reveal!)

It is something that I have several times a week--sort of my go-to year-round cook-able veggie. Since I am doing this Plan to primarily stop inflammatory reactions, I'd appreciate any suggestions about what to eat instead of broccoli? I understand that each day's menu is set up to have a certain nutritional/chemical balance, but I'm just not sure what I can substitute at this point. I am deathly sensitive to spinach, but CAN eat other WELL-cooked greens w/o incident--would they work in place of the brocolli?
TIA for any suggestions.

Hi Loracc67

The only concern is that uncle sam has wheat in it, which is a test later on. You can also make your own flax granola, it is quite easy once you get he hang of it, I make about 4 batches a week.

Hemp and almond milk are also both tests, even if you tested them both in non milk form.

I have never heard of hemp milk. I did pick up the rice dream I think it was and the coconut for phase 1. I do not have my cereal yet. I have some uncle sam granola at the house and I picked up a package of flax seed at the store, it did not say raw but it did not say anything added.

Just so everyone is aware if you go to her site she has an updated cookbook that you can download for free. Alot of sauces and soups you can substitute. Just remember don't get stuck on ingredients. If you don't like cinammon in something don't put it in and sprinkle it on your apple or pear to get it in your day. I hate cinammon on anything but sweet so none of my soups etc get cinammon cloves or anything like it in them. Don't get stuck on the little details that is not what this plan is about. Read the book before you start the program so many people jump right in and then are missing out on alot. Just because a recipe calls for one thing doesn't mean you "have" to use it. You can substitute or omit as to your tastes. Read you reactivity chart, I substituted winter squash for carrots because I hate them and I have still lost 8.8 lbs in a week. I didn't completely cut out the salt but used in moderation (pink sea salt) and still lost the weight. There are things she needs to add but luckily we have forums like these to get that stuff figured out.

JJAKIAN try vitacost.com they have an organic 100% brown rice cereal for a great price. I got three bigs bags for $4.79. Shipping is a flat $5.00 or free if over $45.00. I have also included a link that will give you $10.00 off $30.00. This is where I have gotten all my supplements for the plan. I use all of the vitacost brand as they are cheaper and great quality. I ate the carrot soup one day and I really hate carrots. Haven't touched them since and have still lost 8.8 lbs in less that a week. I made the broccoli soup and use that instead. I don't eat the carrot/beet salad just a regular mixed greens salad in place of it. Use common sense when replacing things and you should be find. I feel that eating something you don't like can cause you to gain or hold onto weight as it causes stress to think about eating it. I also believe that if we don't like something our bodies don't need it. Eat the veggies you like except the ones that need to be tested because of potential high reactivity. I acutally ate green beans yesterday because I went to a Confirmation and they only had salad and green bean for veggies. Still lost .8 today so I know I am not reactive to green beans and white bread. (I knew there was possibility I would have to have friendly day today if I was reactive so I went for it and tried both). Luckily for me I am apparently not reactive to either. For dinner I had rice mixed with coco sauce chicken and my cooked veggies. Just an example that you can make the stuff and use smart substitutes to enjoy the food you are eating.

I also suffered from the constipation problem. Try upping your probiotics for a week or two until your system is all in alignment from all the previous reactive food before starting the plan. It can take our bodies 2-4 weeks to regulate and the extra probiotics seemed to have helped me. I am now going once a day. Down 8.8 lbs since Monday April 21.

I have had the same constipation problem. After reading all the facebook blogs for The Plan, I'm going to try to be more careful with not drinking water for the 45 minutes before and after meals, as was suggested on blog. I will let you know if I have any success.

I too was struggling to lose after hitting 20 pounds- so I decided to do day 1-3 again- within a week I am now down 24. I think without knowing it- we slowly eat a bit more of this and a bit more of that and it all adds up. I ahven;t started exercising yet and I am down 24 pounds- and that hasn;t happened for me on any diet for over 10 years. So I'm thrilled.

A lot of the posts seem over reactive on the weight loss. Like said below it is a matter of calories in vs calories out. The Plan says a weight GAIN of .5 lbs or more may be reactive.
The idea is you still have the eat healthy this Plan just gives you an idea of things your body cannot digest. The Plan is not for people in their 20's. I think it is 40 and up but you would have to look it up. This is because you digestive system is worn out from all the junk you have fed it over the years.

I am only on day 4 (yah! Wine tonight!) But lost 4.2 lbs
Probably because of the extra water and no animal protein but I am going to finish out the plan to see what the heck my body does not like. Then apply those principles to simple calorie in calorie out methodology.

For all those who think you will not like something. Try it 2-3 times before you give up.
I found out I like beets and kale.

I have sucked down many a disgusting diet food some book old natural variety can't hurt.

NITEOWL ~ Have you been to the website? Go here: lyngenet.com/tips-for-book-readers/ and there is a link for a vegetarian plan and a vegan plan.

MANDALA1976 ~ Go to the website link I mentioned above. There is a recipe in the cookbook for a Blueberry Pear Compote. Some people like them cooked but not raw so that might be an option. If it isn't then eat the flax granola without the blueberries. Make it work for you. Also in her book and online she says that the carrot/beet salad is interchangeable with spring mix salad.

AILEBBELIA,

Have you read the book?
It is about finding which foods cause an inflammatory reaction in your body. We are all different, and no "one food" is the answer. This is more of a scientific approach to learn what is right for you individually.

Starving is much less complicating!

This plan is so stupid.

Seriously, I pay big bucks and have spent years of therapy to lose the idea that "eating one item is not going to make me gain weight."

Yet, this "author" get to spread disordered ideas and make money off of people.

I have faced it. Having tasted, a life wasted. Oh, I erased it, I'm NEVER going back again- E. Vedder

Couples question:
So my boyfriend and I are struggling as both of us had a slight reaction on Day 4, down .2lbs (goat cheese), so day 5 we did a rest/cleanse day, but we did have a glass of red wine in the evening. This morning I am up +.6lbs and he is down -.6lbs. Do I go on another rest day (no wine) and he move on to Day 5? If so, this day will suck for me cooking as we are on totally different foods.

He could do another rest day with me, but then this plan is turning from 20 days, to much longer, if we keep resting on each others reaction days. What do you suggest?

Weight gain due to exercise doesn't have anything to do with inflammation. When you place increased demands on your muscles, they retain water so that they can more efficiently convert glucose into fuel.

Hi,

I plan on starting "The Plan" this weekend so I have been reviewing the receipes and preparing myself however there are a few things in the detox that I do not like and was wondering can I replace them with something else.

Blueberries & Beets.

At the end of the day if I have to eat them I will try but really perfer not too!!!

Any advise welcomed.. Thanks

Any suggestions for vegetarians who are thinking of starting the plan? I bought the book a few weeks ago and have been hesitant to start until I figure out what other vegetarians have tried. The website isn't very user friendly when it comes to asking about alternatives. I know that she has done work with vegetarians and vegans so I know it exists!

Exercise can cause temporary weight gain from inflamation because of the body repairing itself & building muscle which is a good thing! This Plan is so far off base with gaining or losing day to day as the body fluctuates but this not actual fat gain so is not accurate with body weight. How can anyone be reactive to eggs but then eat them unknowingly in a slice of bread made with egg & be ok? Another rediculous comment is that turkey makes you sleepy so it is a reactive food, give me a break... have you ever heard of tryptophane, known as a relaxant? What about wine being relaxing & also makes you sleepy or coffee waking you up, but those are good things according to The Plan. So contradictory! I read her theory thinking it might help with pain & tried the plan myself which I discovered no results. It all goes back to calories in & calories out & there are no magic food combinations that change that. Sure you will lose weight eating her meals but as soon as you eat food you like, & I'm sure you will at some point the weight will come right back. If you really want accurate information on eating read "Intuitive Eating" by Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch & stop these crazy diets once & for all. The Plan's foods are good for you & I agree completely that it's healthy eating but the idea of gaining actual weight day to day is not an accurate determination of weight. This puts way too much focus on the mighty scale & anxiety it causes seeing the fluctuations.

Actually she doesn't say specifically why, but does say you can react to exercise due to inflammation. My biggest gain in a day was from a pretty intense weight routine (which I used to do all the time).

Ann,

I am not a fan of the coco sauce either, so I don't use it. I have grown to be a fan of cooked kale, mixed with other veggies that are safe. I then put a hint of sea salt, butter and other safe spices on the mix. I really enjoy kale now, but it took some getting used to.

Hi Janie,

I totally hear where you are coming from. I was on the plan for 8 weeks and finally decided to stop and go to something that works for me for the weight loss. I only lost 4 pounds, and 3 of those pounds were from the first week. I got to where I only had 3 proteins and nothing else. Everytime I tested, I gained. I gained on safe days, then would lose .2 for some reason. It finally got to where I was just not losing anything and I couldn't handle it any longer. I started a plan I have done in the past to lose the weight and will come back to The Plan once I am at my goal weight. I only have 15 pounds to lose and will lose it no matter what. I think The Plan works in making you feel wonderful however am not sure it works for everyone if they want to lose a small amount of weight. Every Body is so different. I will continue to read these great message boards for support for my weight loss. Keep us posted on your weight loss and the best of luck to you.

I have been on The Plan for 7 weeks so I have been testing on my own. After I finally found a third "friendly" protein I decided to eat friendly foods for a while to focus on weight loss. I have been being conscious of my protein, etc. at meals and aware of cheese, roasted veggies, etc. I was losing .5 to .7 lbs. a day. On Sunday, even though I was eating foods from my friendly list I had gained 1.8 lbs when I weighed and for the last 3 days have stayed at the same weight! It seems that when I have tested a new food and gained and then done a couple of rest days I have lost and gained the same 2 lbs for the last month. I haven't cheated and won't but it is getting frustrating to say the least! I make sure to drink all my water, etc. Sundays are the most difficult as I sing in the choir at church. I drink one pint of water with my supplements and eat breakfast before I have to be at rehearsal. By the time I get home from church it is 1:00 pm and I struggle to drink water and eat my meals and snack with 45 min in between water and food. I consume most of my water every day before and after lunch and usually don't have any between snack and dinner. I take 2 probiotic capsules every morning but haven't been as "regular" as I had been.

Restarted from Day 4
Day 1 -2.9 lbs
Day 2 -1.5 lbs
Day 3 -1.4 lbs

So happy to have found this site! I'm confused. My pattern has been lose some, maintain for 4 days, lose again, maintain 4 days. I am maintaining on days of rest foods. For 5 weeks I have followed this pattern. After awhile, not having been able to test new foods, as I was led to believe that not losing was a reactive day, and reactive days are no test days, I decided I needed to forge ahead and consider maintenance days just that, and begin testing. That was the only way I could movE away from the rut of eating the same foods. This may be the reason I have not as much as others report.....:(. Constipation has also plagued me from the get go. Days go by, nothing! This is a new phenomenon for me. I've had to resort to supplements, but wonder if its food related and what food it could be. So far, five weeks, 10 pound loss. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed!

Thank you all for your advice. I do keep track of my eating and working out. Strange thing. I didn't work out last night, ate all safe foods, and gained 2 lbs this a.m. No, I didn't drink past 7:30. I truely did everything right. I just don't get my body! LOL. I am working out tonight so hopefully will be back down tomorrow. This is so crazy but I'm staying on this roller coaster. @HEIDI257 & JENENEHINSON

page 88 lists reasons for reactivity that includes:

1)You didn't meet your water requirements or drank water after 7:30 pm

2) You've had too much sodium

3) You overexercised.

4)You've eaten a food that is reactive to you.

There is more information on exercise and The Plan on page 89 and pages 91-94.

I decided to cut back my exercise, tested it, and for now only do it on REST/no test days so it doesn't interfere with food data/results.

@JENENEHINSON

You say you worked out two days in a row. Working out can cause inflammation that = weight gain or weight stabilization on the plan.

If you haven't already, you should consider doing a "test" of your workout. Eat all friendly foods and workout one day and if you gain, it may be the intensity of your workout that is causing you problems with The Plan.

good luck!

I agree. I only started off with 5 lbs to lose so there is NO way I will lose everyday. And, there is no way that me staying the same means I am reactive. I am looking at major side effects and large jumps in weight that just don't add up. I definitely think it will be trickier for anyone with less to lose. I also worked out yesterday and woke up with very sore muscles. I know that causes you to retain water. She doesn't mention that in her list of reasons, though. I just know it to be true. When, I did have more to lose a long time ago, I had a strong pattern of losing one week, staying the same, losing more the next, etc. I think we just have to pay close attention to our bodies in this process.
