a new favorite treat of mine is a half cup of plain nonfat greek yogurt swirled with a tablespoon of cocoa powder, a teaspoon of splenda for sweetness, and a quarter cup of raspberries to garnish. it tastes so rich and decadent!

To substitute for a frozen treat, I have started putting MIO flavored water into popsicle molds, freezing them like a popsicle...and enjoying a calorie-free, fat-free snack that takes a while to eat. There are many flavors to choose from, so it doesn't get boring.

Personally, I just love a handful of Doritos every now & again....LOL!

Of course, loving them doesn't mean I should EAT THEM. HA!

Grab some fruits or veggies or a container of yogurt....snacks & grazing are fine if you eat healthy stuff.

It Is What It Is.... :)

This makes sense, but whew! This is day 3 for me and I never realized before how much I graze. My meal portions are very small, but I was always eating something--usually not a healthy snack--a couple of hours later. I am having trouble adjusting to eating more at meal time, and the snacking is a habit I don't know what to do about. Suggestions?

I think the key is to always measure everything out and track it, and if you know you like to eat more than one snack, eat smaller meals to allow for this. If you eat 1200 calories a day, and you eat three 400 calorie meals a day, there's all your calories right there, but if you eat three 300 calorie meals, you'll still have 300 calories left for (healthy) snacks throughout the day...which is a lot just for snacks ^_^

I like popcorn for a snack - you can eat a lot of it. You can also eat a lot of nonfat Greek yogurt for a small amount of calories (that's also nice because it feels "heavier" than popcorn).

Maybe oatmeal would be a good substitution for cereal? You can get 100 calorie packages of the instant stuff (I like Better Oats instant). Also, you could try topping yogurt with a little cereal.

Also remember that any new habit takes at least two weeks to form, so whatever changes you make, you've just got to give them a little time.

Good advice about the cottage cheese. I bought some because it was on the menu at sparkp. last week & I used it for that, but have lots leftover. So after seeing your post, I went to the kitchen & spooned out a half cup into a small bowl & added a very old fruit cup that had been in our fridge for months. Pears (& its juice) + cottage cheese = a delicious, protein rich snack! That, plus all the work I still have left to do today should tide me over until dinner.

Whew!

Thanks for the great ideas! Here are some snacks I enjoy:
-baby carrots (200 calories in an entire 16 oz. bag!)
-laughing cow or generic cheese wedges (25 cal!)
-100 calorie popcorn bags
-big dill pickle
-apple or orange
-cabbage (sounds crazy, but I like to munch on it)
-sometimes, if you have a craving for that Little Debbie snackcake, like I just did, sometimes you just need to indulge in one small thing-so you get what you REALLY want- and then you will be satisfied instead of having several other things that are healthier but aren't what you really wanted in the first place.

Hope this helps! :)

I'm a big time snacker. Boredom, fatigue, stress at work, you name it, it's always a good time to snack. I am trying to give up grains, so my beloved microwave popcorn is off limits. I can't keep cookies, or sweets in the house, or I will eat them til they are gone. My latest treats have been to make my own trail mix, using nuts, raisins, and some chocolate bits. I have Celiac Disease and most of the store bought brands have wheat in them, so no good for me. The challenge is limiting myself to just a 1/2 cup. Good luck snacking all.

There are days that I am so ravenous that I have to step out of the kitchen, nothing is safe. I will say though that having cereal (kashi, cascadian farms) will generally curb my hunger after a bowl.

I sort of snack all day, with one larger snack for dinner.

I have breakfast, lunch, snack, maybe another snack, dinner, and maybe another snack, depending on my calories left.

I really need to graze/snack all day. Three squares wouldn't do it for me. So maybe it is stretching your meals a bit and doing more small meals per day?

I love granola bars in between lunch and dinner, but unfortunately, a lot of the ones that you can get at the store are either full of junk or expensive. I'm going to make some on my own next week to hopefully improve this snacking habit!

I'm totally a snacker too. I find that if I have something to drink it helps out. Right now I'm addicted to natural teas. I love Teavana. Right now my sweet tooth calls for (zero calories all the way) CocoCaramel Sea Salt and also Chocolate Raspberry Truffle. Yum! These are hot teas but in the summer I like ice water with lemon.

fat free microwave popcorn or non fat yogurt are my go to snacks. If I get bored with the texture of the yogurt, I put a few sprinkles (like those used to decorate frosting) in for some crunch. Oranges are so sweet right now, they are taking over my snacking!

I keep a veggie tray stocked in my fridge. my kids love to pull it out and snack on it and it makes preparing salads easy. When getting my lunch ready in the mornings I can grab veggies and throw them in a baggie for a snack later on.

Sometimes, just a cup of bullion (cube) really satisfies me, and its only 5 (or 20 depending on where you ask) calories. Pickles are very low fat (but high in sodium). Or, a slice of 35 calorie whole wheat bread spread with a mixture of .5 tbsp honey and .5 tbsp peanut butter. I like boiled eggs too.

KAREBEAR1487, I'm totally with you on the banana drizzled with honey and cinnamon. I'm learning that extracts and spices can turn a semi-boring healthy snack like vanilla fat free yogurt or fat free cottage cheese into my healthy ice-cream substitute. I've also found adding a 1/2 tsp (or less depending on extract) of a flavor to a vanilla slimfast shake makes the shake nearly delectable! And they're so easy to mix with the electric milk frothers.

I crave sweet in the evening and find that, even after a healthy dinner, if I don't have something with my meds when I go to bed, I wake up hungry. One pre-measured sweet satisfier I've found are the Edy's or Dryer's fruit bars. Just one gives me the cool and creamy texture I crave and is satiating enough to get me through the night. Sometimes I think it's just a matter of having something to keep my meds from irritating my stomach.

Another category of go-to items for me is fruit. When I have a total energy slump late afternoon or mid-morning, an apple or clementines will get me going again - and get those natural food vitamins and fiber I sometimes miss. Veggies work too except for the sweet cravings in the evenings.

The biggest factor for me in making a smart snack decision over a poor one is whether or not I've kept up my grocery shopping so that I have the healthy items on hand. It's way easier to choose healthy items when they are present and easily accessible than when my fridge is stocked primarily with condiments and I'm left scrounging through the non-perishables.

Love everyone's suggestions and am going to have to read through this topic again and make a list of ideas! Thank you!

Hard Boiled Egg - I throw away the yellow and eat the white only with a little balsamic venegar for flavor. I also love sliced apples and sometimes I dip my apple in peanut butter - just a bite! I have to concentrate on getting protein so the egg is my favorite!

I keep protein bars in my car, as I travel around for my job. I eat a few bites when I am hungry-I can't really take a snack break so no time for more than a few bites. It keeps me satisified until my lunch break. I eat the rest for my pm snack , with apple slices. I do have time for lots of water though.
Snacking has always helped me in the past with weight loss.

I'm concentrating on hitting my protein goals. I tend to eat to many carbs and too little proteins. I've replaced some of my fruit choices with nuts, snow peas, steamed green beans, Greek yogurt. Getting enough protein is my daily challenge.

There's nothing wrong with cottage cheese-It's what you add to it and how much. A serving is 1/2 cup-be determined to keep it that way. It is allowed as a milk with a meal or it can be as a scheduled snack a while -a couple hours after a meal. Actually add your fruit and a veggie and a protein and you have a meal.
My thing I do is eat just what I'm supposed to eat and get away from the whole idea and do something else- Get things cleaned up and go on to do something else. Get your mind centered on something else.-There are better things to do than to eat when you shouldn't need to eat.

Hey-We all need help!

I'm new to Sparkpeople (just joined today - yay!) but one of my favorite snacks is cottage cheese.

I tend to snack less when I concentrate on higher protein food choices.

Sometimes I sweeten my cottage cheese with stevia and cinnamon and sometimes I spice it up and add chopped veggies like cucumber, green pepper, etc.

Either way, it's a fave. emoticon

I don't see any problem with eating foods late, especially good-for-you foods like fruit and popcorn (which is a whole grain!). Even the SP trivia game says that eating late isn't any more likely to turn into fat than food eaten at any other time.

I actually like the salt-free rice cakes, so I put a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese on one and that makes a great snack. Others: green grapes, string cheese, hard-boiled egg, four ounces of Greek yogurt, baby carrots.

I think I'm like a lot of people here--always wanting to snack at night. Normally, I drink a glass of water and wait 15 minutes. If I'm still hungry after that, I'll grab a piece of fruit or a rice cake with some peanut butter. But I make a big show of it. No standing and eating in the kitchen. I cut up the fruit or arrange the rice cake on a plate, sit down, and eat it like a meal. I find that when I'm conscious of what I'm eating instead of mindlessly grazing, I eat less. Good luck, fellow nocturnal snackers!

I don't think of snacking as a bad habit; I think of it as a chance to get in more fruits and veggies. Frozen cherries are a fave. Also raw cauliflower, snow peas, and fresh fruit of any kind, especially melon.

I CRAVE salty, crunchy food. The perfect solution for me is a big ole, spicy hot Dill Pickle! High sodium, but LOW, LOW Calorie (about 20-25 per pickle!)

ME TOO. I found that I was eating when I was bored. If I keep busy and eat healthy I have a better mind, and more cautious..

Sometimes I wasn't hungry but bored, etc.

One thing that often helped me was to set my timer for 15 minutes and then got busy doing something else. If at the end of 15 minutes I was still hungry I'd have carrots, hummus, whole grain crackers, or a boiled egg.

I love to take 1/2 banana frozen, 2 Tbs Better n' Peanutbutter, 1/2 cup skim milk and Truvia or other sweetner to taste and whip it up in my mini blender and drink it with a straw. Makes a yummy thick shake.

My go- to snacks are plain nonfat yogurt with homemade granola or hummus and veggies. But I always keep popcorn and fruit for quick out the door grabs.

I used to hit the cupboard and grab whatever crunchy salty carbs I could find and binge. Now I try to grab fruit, a mini bag of popcorn, yogurt, or some other reasonable portioned item that I have around. It seems to be working for me. I have been able to eat a snack and stop. I am grateful for that. I hated to just eat uncontrollably.

Great ideas from everybody. I'm glad to know what works for others.

In my world, lots of those things wouldn't "work", though. I do love small portions of nuts. I like veggies with dip. I love microwave cheese "crackers."

As someone mentioned here, if you're trying to break the snack syndrome, stay away from carb-y foods. They actually *create* cravings. The thing that satiates is fats. There are some delectable nut butters that I love to slather on celery sticks or aforementioned cheese "crackers." I'm a bacon fanatic; I'll bake up the whole package and put half slices in a container in the fridge, and pull one or two out and either eat it cold or pop it in the toaster oven to recrisp. Meat jerky is good. Hard-boiled eggs are good. I actually love the "alternate" desserts: coconut milk "ice cream" sandwiches, for example. Almond or coconut milk yogurt. I love gelatin, too. Watch out for the "sugar free", as those frequently will be sweetened with aspartame, which is worse than sugar. But the nutritional values for gelatin are so negligible, the regularly (sugar) sweetened version is usually okay. And you should check the label on whipped topping. It's amazingly low in pretty much everything. Sometimes I check a sweet craving just by taking a spoonful of that.

There is evidently a wide swath of possibilities in this thread. Hope you find some that fit your nutritional plan!

I try to keep tamari almonds and pistachios handy. 1/4 cup in a small bowl....nice to nibble while reading before bedtime!

Trying to keep the snacking to an absolute minimum, but when the urge hits, I munch on a fistful of pistachios or almonds with a piece of fruit or maybe some frozen yogurt (about 1/2 cup). If I've been really good, I'll splurge on a small piece of dark chocolate.

I'm a big fan of the Special K cracker chips right now too. I pair them with 2 TBS of hummus and some carrots. The hummus makes me feel fuller, the carrots are a great snacking vegetable, and the chips provide the salty snack I sometimes crave.

I've found a new snack that I love if I have extra calories allowed. A banana, a TSP of chocolate chips and 2 tbsp cool whip. I am a sweet person (read chocoholic) and it gives me just enough sweetness to hold me over. Yummy!

I am currently loving the Special K cracker chips. One serving (110 calories) is 30 chips. When you count out a serving, it is a lot and it feels like you are getting a substantial serving size.

For my night time snacking, I first have an herbal tea. After that, if I am still hungry and not thirsty or just bored, then I will have Greek yogurt or a bowl of cereal with skim milk.
