Iceberg lettuce , cabbage and carrots are the only ingredients in my bagged salad mix. I just looked at the bag. I use them a lot. I can keep a bag in the fridge a week. I find them so much easier to use. Love keeping them on hand. They make a great chicken taco salad or crab salad.

I don't have proof but I feel there is a coating on salads in a bag. It affects taste and I do not like it. Like Yojulez I would by the prewashed organic mixes in plastic tubs..but still mostly but regular romaine or bib and wash it myself. And I like those green bags.

Getting in shape for my trip to Alaska...and also for the rest of my life.

if you want to know about preservatives, read the label as they will be listed there if there are any. most of the time i find they are only in the kinds that have croutons or dried fruit or cheese or other non-lettuce things.

personally i have the spoilage issue as well. and when i can keep head of lettuce for up to three weeks, the 38 hour life time of the stuff that comes prewashed just doesn't cut it.

-google first. ask questions later.

When I buy them, I buy them in the plastic containers, versus the bags. They seem to last longer. I also buy organic, since there's always so many problems w/ lettuce recalls. It costs a bit more, but not much especially considering they last longer. My store often puts them on sale for 2.99. I buy a 50/50 mix that's half spring mix, half baby spinach and my last one lasted almost 2 weeks without going limp (I don't eat a lot of salad).

The prepackaged cut lettuces don't last more than a day or two in my fridge, so if I am not planning on eating it all in one sitting, I think it is a waste of money. Romaine is a pain to clean from the bundles, so I understand that side too. BUT I think it is more versitile. I like it better for sandwiches. I can cut it to any size for salads or smaller for wraps and tacos. I can clean all the leaves in one go, wrap them in paper towels and put them in a container and they last longer than I would ever think they could.

If you can stick with romaine it is usually fresher and will not go limp as quick. You can also as I saw on pinterest break it up and put it in a glass mason jar to keep crisp longer. I will buy the bagged things once in awhile but find they go bad before the date printed, are not crisp, and also unless on sale for buy one get one free they are not a value either. When I am not sure how much romaine I will use instead of buying them and cutting up I get a box from the produce department, still cheaper and more value than the bags when the math is done.

I have tons of salads as go-to meals, and usually I buy heads of romaine and tear it up. But for convenience's sake, lately I've been using pre-packaged lettuces (like the ones from Dole). Are those a good choice? I've heard they have lots of preservatives, frrom both online sources and also from my husband, who is a chef. Comments? Should I stick with romaine or go to the packaged stuff? Thanks!
