Each healthy choice will make a big difference! m I am not familiar with "grams": how much that is. Would that amount be a normal sized piece of cake? I've cut back on sugars also, but I still want them.

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things:... Psalm 98 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though... we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day my day....So fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal 2 COR 16-18 Doing nothing is the most perfect form of action, when I do nothing there is nothing left undone and there is nothing left to do.... a cup of hot Pomegranate Pizzazz tea ..... now I want a lovely cup! I am so suggestible, yet another good reason to surround myself with those aligned with the same goals and ideas as myself, to help reinforce and suggest the next choice, the next right thing and a place to turn when I am succumbing to other than healthy suggestions which we are bombarded with constantly in this society. Tea is so much a better 'feel' than sugar. Will be reminding myself of this today and tonight, especially. As the nights grow longer, sweets are raising their ugly head in my own head. Craving tea is a much better choice. Because I can! Yes. Because I can. I will. so many can't, I am very glad to still have a modicum of choices left Because I can! words to live by... from the best wellness therapist on the planet, who gave me magnets with this saying and I have it all over my house to help remind me. I can do this, whatever it is.... Because I can. Drink tea~ in fact, going to make a whole pot right now!

You have the same issue that I have and so many others. Thank you for posting your thoughts. I know that I'm not alone in this. Cake, in, particular has been my nemesis from a child! Once I get away from it and keep it out of my life, I'm better off for it, but it creeps in again and again. This discussion is one that is needed and I appreciate the fact that you are doing what it takes to overcome!

Great job! Sweets are a big weakness of mine as well. I failed miserably yesterday (Halloween), but reading your story "sparked" me to be more conscientious and motivated today! Keep up the good work! Shawna

Congrats! For my birthday I requested sorbet with fresh fruit toppings about 6 years ago. Now everyone asks for similar celebrations!

that is a FANTASTIC revelation!! You are using several aspects to think through this and that is beautiful. The reality of the calories. Recalling how we feel after eating cake. Acknowledging how you feel NOW and how important it is to stay the course. Oh yea and I forgot the diabetes part. STAY THE COURSE AND REAP THE REWARDS!

For years I tried to help friends struggling with weight that it was OK not to partake in "cake" for birthdays (even their own)! If your friends/colleagues care and understand you they wouldn't guilt you into a piece. Just because you don't partake doesn't mean they shouldn't have to, and there shouldn't be any emotional blackmail going on there. When i was diagnosed with type2 diabetes at 40 it wasn't a shock to me because it runs in my family, but no one can believe it since I weighed about 130 pounds (5'6") but in some ways it only made it harder because people almost chastise you for being on a "diet" because "you're already thin" but I'm down to 120 pounds and it took my glucose levels down with it (about 50 points average) so it DOES make a difference. I still get ragged on for not partaking in free office goodies, cake, and yesterday's cupcakes and candy. I know that visually it may seem I'm being ridiculous, but my issue is an invisible one and as you noted one day of partaking only starts the cravings all over again. I admit that for the season I had filled my candy jar at my desk with candy corn and while mostly it was others that partook, I did have a few kernels every now and again. But the key is always moderation. Anything forbidden just makes me want it, so for me having just a little bit reminds me that it isn't forbidden but a little treat! Good luck on your journey and remember that the "realization moment" is often the game changer. Since you can't make a real meaningful change until you have that gestalt moment that tells you you do need to just do it.

You are so right! It's like there is a thunk sound that goes off... is it really worth it? Keeping the consequences and reality of how sugar or whatever will affect me for much longer than that initial taste. Good for you!

I relate. I am giving up sugar and white flour which has become less difficult... but there are those moments when everyone else is having.... Halloween candy for example. But the sugar cravings triggered and the momentary exhileration from the sugar in my mouth are always followed by a lump in my stomach of regret. Good for you for deciding to say no. I know the food will keep calling so hope you keep up yelling louder and are able to keep up your abstainance.
I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me.

GOOD FOR YOU STAYING AWAY FROM THE SWEETS. !! NOW MIGHT BE A GOOD TIME TO START A NEW TRADITION. BE CREATIVE NEXT TIME WITH A BEAUTIFUL PLATE OF OPEN FACE VEGGIE SANDWICHES OR LRG BOWL OF LAYERED FRUITS.. A CANDLE OR CANDELABRA WOULD MAKE IT FESTIVE. YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK WITH CO-WORKERS FIRST.MANY OTHERS MAY BE FEELING THE SAME AS YOU AND JUST TOO POLITE TO REFRAIN FROM THE EXCESS SWEETS. PAT

When I read your story, it reminded me of the 100th time I tried to quit smoking. Just like you when the craving came that day, something in my brain clicked and I thought (Just like you) it is not worth it....after one - in an hour I will want another. It is NEVER ending. I made it! 10 years! I love your story and will share it with my TOPS group. Several struggle with diabetes. Now I need some help with fatty, salty foods. I will think of your story and how one serving of chips just opens the door for more. It NEVER satisfies for long.

Good for you! My go to when everyone around me is having "off limits" food is a cup of peach green tea. I have been sugar and flour carb free since August and can honestly tell you my cravings are finally gone. A store bought cake would not even temp me at this point. Would it be possible for you to change the birthday cake tradition to perhaps something more healthy? It would benefit everyone. Some suggestions would be a fruit platter, or fresh apples with peanut or almond butter. Just a healthy thought. Cheers to your control! lisa

It sounds like a good plan. I totally understand that now that you have weened yourself off sugar that the cravings will come back if you have a taste. It is no different than any other addiction such as alcohol, smoking....

I wish I had read this BEFORE I had that "fun sized" KitKat... But will be getting RID of the rest! Don't need them on my hips, thighs or butt!! Hope you were able to keep your promise to yourself! I have just read through the other replies here, and think if you play the diabetes card, no one will try to tempt you... as in "My doctor is very concerned that I am on the verge of developing diabetes and has asked me to cut out ALL sugar as a trial for then next 3 months. It is hard, but please help me with this" When you enlist the doctor, and ask for help, you are giving them the opportunity to feel really good about themselves by NOT trying to tempt you! double victory!
