it's encouraging to see that fluctuations of 1-3lbs is common, because mine fluctuates like that, too.

Here's my follow up question: (apologies if it's already been asked multiple times on this thread, I didn't scroll all the way through) - how do you know how much weight you're really losing? Is it just a matter of time? Waiting a week or two to see if the fluctuations are in lower weight ranges?

I take body measurements, too, so that I'm not only relying on the scale, but I'm curious how others gauge their weight loss and take fluctuations into account.

I weigh myself daily as well - to the point of obsession. There are, of course, unexpected fluctuations I observe (eating well, working out but gaining weight; or the exact opposite).

For me (it can be how my body reacts, I do not want to generalize this for all) below points result in daily increases in weight despite all the good work I put in:

- If I do my strength training after work (around 7-8pm for me)
- If I eat grains after 4-5pm
- If I sleep less than 6 hours (not so healthy by itself, but my schedule might require it occasionally)
- If I drink majority of my water during the first half of the day
- If I feel stressed about eating extra food (given that it is healthy and within my calorie range) - might be related to stress hormone secretion

I am so glad to see this thread topic because I was getting frustrated as well.

I only weigh in on Mondays when I do my tracking, measurements once a month (as suggested). I do not weigh in everyday (that's a real downer for me, personally as it does fluctuate).

This past week, I've had a gain of 1.5 lbs and cannot explain it as my calorie range is 1200 to 1550 and for the most part, I've been around the 1200 to 1300 range and opted to "over estimate" calories (to be on the safe side when in doubt) than to underestimate and fool myself.

What a downer when I saw that on the scale after having been so good with everything this past week BUT, it put me in a MUCH better frame of mind to see that some people gain a pound or two before a loss. Maybe, I'm heading for that loss next week??? Or, maybe, I've had the decaf tea and counted it as water and I need more plain water instead? Whatever it is, it's frustrating to see that gain.

I did weigh both on Monday and today with the same weight, still stuck there. Maybe, I need to up the calories and the water?

I did start to do a bit of exercise this week *difficult with arthritis in my knees* and I'm paying for it with pain but, trying! :)

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks for being here! :)

I was just wondering about this & I'm glad I decided to see if anyone had the same fluctuations in weight. Monday I weighed in at 145.8, the last 2 days I've kept my calorie range in check (between 1200-1500) & limit my night snack to 1: 100-200 calorie snack (night is my problem snack time). This morning I weigh in at 141.8 emoticon As long as the scales going in the right direction I guess its all good.

Don't worry, Be Happy :)

I get on the scale every morning, after using the bathroom and with only my underwear on. But I only track on Mondays. I find that Mondays keep me on track on the weekend, and as I'm not working I can get in more water so I know I won't be up due to not enough water.

During the week, if everything is going as it should with regards to exercise and my nutrition, I will see a fluctuation of up to 3 lbs on the daily weigh ins, but I know that the only one that matters is the one on Monday morning.

I'm crazy obsessed. I step on the scale every time I see it! And rarely get the same number twice. My weight can fluctuate up to 5 lbs in a day. Fortunately, I don't get bothered by that. In fact, I'm intrigued. It's like a puzzle to try to figure out what I've done in the last hour that could have changed my weight. It's also pretty cool to know that when I go to bed at night I will usually wake up about 2.5 lbs lighter!

It just varies from a little to alot, but I get worried when it stays the same. I generally have a little bit of a gain just before a nice drop. So this is something that I am trying to track and see patterns. What I did/didnt do etc. I could just go with the flow, I have a SIL that never weighs but goes by her clothes, but I am trying to delve more into the science of it and staying on top of the plateaus as soon as I see the potential.

This is your journey. Take the wheel and drive!

I weigh everyday (bad I know!) but only track on Fridays. My weight goes up and down constantly, this week I've had ranges between 147 and 151 pounds! I know its not real weight gain, I've upped my exercise this week which probably explains it. I also put on about 2-3 pounds during the day, lose it again at night!

SW - 155
CW - 145
first goal - 150
second goal - 146
third goal - 140 - eeeek!

ultimate goal is 135!

Thanks everyone for you replies!

I am trying to determine some of the more obvious causes for weight fluctuation. I heard it was normal, I was just curious as to what other people's experiences were.

I know that I tend to retain fluid in my muscles if I have had a hard workout, not drank enough water or worked out in the heat.

I know that too much salt has an impact.

I know that ovulation and menstruation are good for two pounds.

STACIEL625 - if you are doing very challenging exercise, exercise that is new to you etc. there is a good chance your muscles are retaining fluid for rebuild and repair which will contribute to fluctuations

Cheers,

Kelly

Yes

If I've eaten foods with too much salt, I can retain too much water.
Various things can cause weight to fluctuate during the week. I don't weigh myself often, but once a week is enough.

I think you're weighing yourself much too often, even at 3 times per week. I weight every Friday morning, and I think even THAT is too often. I wish I had the willpower to do it once a month. Everyone, but especially women, will have weight fluctuations that can depress us once we look down at the number on the scale.

Try using different measurements as to how much weight you're losing. I look at how my clothes are hanging on me, how I look in the mirror, and how I feel. It helps to not focus solely on the scale.

Mine is anywhere from 2-5 lbs. I get so frustrated when I go up after a really hard, long workout and when I have been extremely careful of what I ate the day before. I used to weigh myself everyday but it got to the point that the kind of day I would have depended on the number on the scale. Now I weigh in 3-4 times a week and go more by how my smallest pair of shorts-pants fit and not on by the number on the scale.

Anywhere from 1-4lbs throughout the week, but I know that it is just a fluctuation from things I've eaten or not getting enough water, and not a GAIN, which seems to be such a misconception around here. You didn't GAIN 4lbs overnight! But I like to weigh everyday to keep myself in check throughout the week.

I usually bounce around a 2-4 pound range with the odd really high or really low spike if I've done something weird. As an example, I just changed up my fitness and eating quite a bit last week, so my body reacted by doing this:

Friday: 125
Saturday: 124
Sunday: 126
Monday: 126
Tuesday: 125.5
Wednesday: 123
Thursday: 122

(taken around 7am in the same conditions each day. Obviously there's more even fluctuation to be had throughout the day)

Normally I wouldn't remember those numbers (I usually just weigh, take mental note of what my weight is doing, and then move on with my day), but with tweaking things a bit I'm watching a little more closely to see how my body reacts. As you can see, it reacted by spiking up for a few days, and then settling down back into a more comfortable zone. I'm recording my weight as a weekly average while I'm monitoring it.

I like weighing every day because I find it really interesting to see how my body reacts to things over time. You can learn a lot as long as you can emotionally handle seeing higher numbers occasionally.

I don't know, I usually try to weigh myself once a week or two.
But it's also good to weigh yourself in the same condition: i.e. naked, or without shoes, after using the bathroom, etc.

About 2 lbs. I weigh myself daily in the morning. As long as the overall trend is downward I don't pay much attention to when I weigh more 1 or 2 days out of the week.

For those of you are not super restrained and weigh themselves more than once a week: how much does your weight fluctuate? Or does it at all?

Cheers,

Kelly
