I had foot surgery and was sedentary for 2 months and didn't gain weight. After 1.5 weeks on elavil, I gained 5 lbs. After 1 month, I gained and retained 8 lbs. I was out of control. I couldn't stop eating. There was no such thing as self control. I had insomnia for 3 months and I first was so happy because it was a miracle drug. I was sleeping too long though--eleven hours. I went on trazadone for sleep and it doesn't work. I was on ambien for years and loved it. Ambien only works if you take it occasionally. The generics are mostly junk. I miss the original , but the insurance companies won't cover it and it costs $130. Any ideas on sleep medication?

I have been taking 25mg for 2 months and gained 15 pounds. I'm pretty sure its water weight since my diet hasn't changed and I'm working out a lot more now. I take it for fibromyalgia, along with Cymbalta (no problems with that, been on it for about 6 months). Elavil/Amitryptaline slows the metabolism, causes the body to hold onto whatever you eat. I'm considering changing my diet to a higher protein diet and am talking to the doctor about the weight gain. I also have thyroid issues and this can cause water weight gain too, so we are checking on that. I didn't get the hungry cravings many others are experiencing. For me, this is the best solution as I have been able to increase my workout and began to function again. I hope you find something for you migraines, are they frequent enough that you need a full time medicine? There's as'needed treatments. If you get them before you period, thee you can get frova. Just keep working with your doctor until you find something that works for you.

StevenR6-Obviously the Elavil isn't helping you sleep if you wake up and eat at 3 am. try something different for sleep.

Well put! I appreciate your response.

I'm taking the med for sleep. My primary physician prescribed it saying she has seen a lot of good results. I also see a cardiologist in a week. He might have other thoughts about the weight gain.

I'm on Elavil for sleep and am struggling with weight gain. The med is helping with sleep but it's also causing weight gain. I working hard to lose the weight I've gained!

Hi,

Sorry your going through this.
It depends what you are taking this for. An alternative medication might help. This med causes a lot of physical (vs. mental) hunger. Yes, you can use sheer willpower, but this medication demands a lot of willpower.

Good luck!

I'm struggling with weight gain since I started taking Elavil. I was put on the med for sleep. I'm on a 35 mg dosage. I wake around 3:00 am and eat. I had dropped 20 lbs before I went on this med- have now gained it back. I've tried cold water, prayer, a double work out and asking my wife to hide food.

Any tips?

I'm on Elavil for sleep and am struggling with weight gain. The med is helping with sleep but it's also causing weight gain. I working hard to lose the weight I've gained!

I hope so. I'm keeping hope alive. I've lost 3 lbs so far. So I'm on the right track. Losing wasn't a problem all the time on Elavil. I would lose but seem to gain it back plus more the next week and thanks again for the advice and answering my questions.

I'm glad your going to a neurologist.

About the low dose of Elavil. I don't remember what dose I was on, but I know it wasn't a high dose. I think, when it comes to side effects of medication, some people react to small doses. You will know if it's Elavil after you go off of it. You won't be as hungry and you will shed the pounds. You may feel more perky, too :)

Good luck!

Thank you. I will look into getting into a neurologist for the headache. I'd rather find out what is causing them anyway instead of suppressing them with anti depressants.

The reason I asked about your dose is because the dr. I saw today doesn't think that the dose I'm on is causing me to gain weight. He said usually people on this med take 150 mg a day or something and I'm only taking 25 mg a day.

I'm sorry, I don't remember. It's been too long ago.

I would consider taking another medication. Even if you go down on the dose, you are still apt to gain weight. You just won't gain as much.

Do you have a hospital or clinic that specializes in headaches? They are the best places to go to or a neurologist that specializes in headaches.

Good luck!

"I recently about 2 wks ago had a toothache for a few days which clearly caused me to have a constant headache even when on Elavil but it went away."

You probably ought to go to the dentist. Even if the toothache goes away, you could still have an abscess or infection that you can't see or feel, and fixing it might just fix the whole headache situation. Dental problems can affect your heart, too, so you really shouldn't ignore a toothache.

I am not sure exactly when the headaches started but I would say Around December 2011 if I started taking Elavil Jan 23rd

I recently about 2 wks ago had a toothache for a few days which clearly caused me to have a constant headache even when on Elavil but it went away.

When I went to the doctor for my headache issue, all they did was some physical examination and asked a lot of questions.

When did you start having the headaches? Is your doctor helping you try to figure out the cause?

If they're mysterious and started fairly recently, be sure to talk to your dentist and/or orthodontist! We tend to forget (or not ever know) that our teeth and mouth are part of almost all of our systems. An impacted or abscessed tooth can cause headaches even if you don't have a toothache. (It can also add to general inflammation and make it a little harder to lose weight.)

Finding a drug with fewer side effects is a good thing, but finding the cause of the headaches and stopping that would be even better.

yes I read that it can increase appetite. I also read that this drug is linked with histamine receptors to the brain and it plays a role in deranging the metabolism. LIke I said I am shocked at this weight gain. It's like something is working against me and my efforts (diet and faithful exercise) and I believe it is this medicine. I have increased in weight and it goes up and down between 7-8 lbs. I want to get off this drug and on something that will not cause me to gain weight. I was losing weight steadily for 2 years up until a month after I started taking this pill a few months ago. I know the main reason people take this is for depression but I am taking the pill for daily headahces that I started having.

Elavil is used to treat symptoms of depression. It may have other uses with which I am not familiar. I took this drug about 25 years ago and it did cause a lot of weight gain for me because it increased my appetite. Before I knew it, I was overweight in a way I had never been before.

Hi,

It took about two months. I know that Elavil doesn't leave your system for about 3 weeks. That's probably why it took so long. That and that I didn't try super hard to loose weight. Having said that, everyone is different. So if you keep up with your aerobics and eat right, you might lose quicker than I did.

I hope you find just the right med for your headaches. Do you know there is a Migraine food restriction diet? Staying away from Nitrites and Nitrates that you find in processed meats is one of them. You can find the diet in the Mayo Clinic.

Stay positive and keep up the good work! :)

I read an article on what type of meds cause weight gain and Elavil seemed to be the only one of the meds I take that is the culprit. I try to avoid processed foods lately or eat sparingly. I consume spinach on a regular but maybe not enough to keep a headache away. I'll have to look into the Brazilian nut. Are they expensive and where do you buy them?

Are you still taking Elavil? If not, how long did it take for your weight to come back off? I have settled for oh Im in a plateau. What plateau causes 10 lb weight gain? This is what I've gained in three months. I'll lose and gain it back and this time I've gained 6 lbs in the past couple weeks give or take a few because I know menstrual will temporarily add a few lbs. I'm eating roughly 1900 calories a day and working my ass off at the y five days a week. There is no way I should be gaining weight. I'm even still 100 lbs overweight so this does not make sense to me. I've called my doctor already. They're going to have to put me on something else.

Mnay meds can cause weight gain. Speak with your doctor. Yeast & wheat found in processed foods can cause headaches, or you could be low in magnesium. A good idea would be to eat magnesium rich foods like 2 brazil nuts a day, spinachand cut down on the processed food you eat. Eat fresh veegies and fruits.

There are lots of headache types, some people get relief from a cup of hot chocolate. A good nutritious diet in general will help fight migraine

Hi,
Yes, I've been on Elavil. It made me very hungry! I gained 10 lbs in one month and I wasn't even aware of it until it was too late :( . There are other good prescription medications your doctor can try you on. Google, Mayo Clinic Migraines. You will find good information there on types of medications. I would talk to you doctor about your weight gain and ask him for a medication that doesn't give you the side effect of weight gain.

Good luck! :)

I didn't know where to post this. Maybe this is a panic button situation but here goes......I've been having some serious issues with losing weight for about three months now. I have gained 13 pounds since end of February. I have no idea why. I started thinking maybe it was the most recent medicine I'm on which is Elavil. The only reason I was prescribed this was because I was having frequent headaches. I googled this and it said it is a possibility. I have been faithfully exercising which includes cardio and weight/ resistance for two years and my eating is about 80% on point as far as counting calories and sticking to it. I am not sure when I started taking this medicine to see if this is the issue but I'm calling my doctor first thing in the morning to find out. I'm on 25 mg a day. Has anyone in here had any issues with this med and weight gain?
