I don't buy anything that I know might tempt me to just sit and eat whenever I have a few extra minutes.

I rarely find that I'm bored I have lots of things to do and constantly thinking about new projects. I do fall prey to stress. I been watching myself more carefully because there are certain triggers that seem to push me over. An example for stressing out is dealing with my special needs son. I have to be present while he is going through his moment. Before I can switch myself out of that caregiver role I may have reached for the potato chips and munching away to soothe myself.

Whenever I am bored or stressed, I engage myself. I recently purchased a Zumba program so I am busy learning the new dances before actually starting the full program.

I have a Nook and I love to read. All those free books are just a fingertip away! And oh, the free games! I am having so much fun with my Nook. It keeps me occupied.

I also love to cook. I have a radio in my kitchen and when I cook, I listen to music and sing and dance.

I hope these little tidbits help you out.

I just went thru a very stressful period, and I am trying very hard to check the habit of emotional eating. My computer was broken and I was recovering from surgery so exercising and walking was out and so was everything I do on line like budgeting shopping library books and Spark People, which was really hard as I co- lead two teams and also was in two very terrific challenges.
I tried distraction with reading and watching tv and activity involving moving my arms and legs and chair marching as much as I could without pain to myself. It didn't work. I was so stressed out worrying about everything that I would just keep thinking about all I need to get done that was on my computer and I couldn't do while it was down. To make it worse my computer technician was down very sick and it has been almost 3 weeks before he got to my computer. I did eat and I couldn't hold myself to one controlled portion. I am working very hard to continue losing weight and getting in shape as I have arthritis and type 2 diabetes. I've lost 100lbs in 3 years and have just 60 to go. But most of all I want to kick this habit out for good. Any suggestions beside controlled portions don't keep it in the house or distraction? I really need help!

I am terrible with this, too. If I am "on program" I can talk myself out of stress eating, but if I have slacked even one little bit, I will eat out of control. All-or-nothing. Not a good thing...

This is for me...

I am as we'll suffering from eating while bored, eating while stressed and eating emotionally. I try try try to keep myself busy as night with cleaning and my two boys, but often find myself saying, "you deserve it, you had a busy day". Then I sit down with my popcorn, most the time, or my chips and Salsa and completely undo my busy day/workout. I do workout about 3-4 days a week, but have those stubborn 10 lbs left to loose.

Go out for a run, walk or even a drive around the neighborhood. Basically do anything that gets you out of the house and away from the kitchen.

I have been wanting to buy the SparkPeople Cookbook but I know me and the way I live wasn't sure if I would use it or just toss it aside....I'm not really good at committments but I'm always open for ideas...maybe some good will come from this website, I did notice you bought the cookbook and wanted to know if it would be of help to me as I do cook for only one...Since I haven't worked since July 2009 I have become very reckless in my eating choices and how much I eat which is all day......Yes, I do have a treadmill and need to get back on it.......
Thanks... emoticon

I am so bored right now, I have gone to the kitchen 3 times to get something to eat. But so far I have talked myself out of it. It is a little after 11:30, I had breakfast at 8:30 and a peach about 10. I am trying to hold off now for lunch probably around 12:30. Wish me luck. Sometimes if I am home I will actually take a nap if possible just to keep me from eating. I am seriously considering it now, but I will be out for a couple hours if I do. Then I pick up my daughter from pre-school at 2:30 and dinner is usually planned for 4-5 or so. So lets see, if I take nap now get up at 2, I might as well skip lunch by then and just have a piece of fruit and wait for dinner. I don't know we will see. I hate being bored.

Good for you!! Going to the park will make everyone feel better, and once you're out you'll realize that you're not hungry at all. Works every time. I have three kids, too, so yes, I feel your pain!

Perfect time to read this... On mat leave with my 3rd baby and today seems to be the day my oldest girls will drive me to eat anything and everything due to stress. It's better than yelling at them but isn't a solution. Instead of raiding the cupboard I logged onto here for some motivation, I'm glad I did! Think I'll head to the park with the girls rather than the cupboard!

Let your light shine!

You are not even close to the only one. Yesterday I went to work happy to be in a smaller size, patting myself on the back for working out - life was good. By lunch I was so stressed, it was insanely busy, problems upon problems that needed to be dealt with right away, short handed as always and I felt like I was ready to explode when I left. I went home, mixed a drink and ate anything and everything I could get my hands on. The good thing is - I don't have junk food in my house so I binged on fruit, cottage cheese, vegetables... still - it was a self destructive act - sort of rubbing rock salt in the wound. I don't understand why when we need nurturing the most, when we need to be kind and gentle with ourselves is when we're likely to be the opposite. Oh well, I can't unring that bell - just start over again. I have worked on this for years and it is getting better - less often, less damaging...

I eat when I am stressed. I eat when I am emotional. I eat as a way to enjoy my time spent procrastinating, even if I call if "planning". Did I already say I eat when I am emotional? I have dusted off the Power 90 tapes (yes, I said tapes! I have' used them off and on for about 8 years). LOVE them although I have to change up my activities so as not to get bored. It is too yellow in GA to run, walk, play tennis, etc. and I am fighting the alarm clock in the morning, so Power 90 after work in the basement has been my pick up to keep me away from the fridge after work. Weekends are a bit more of a challenge....

Sometimes, I just can't prevent eating when I am bored or stressed. So I make sure that the handiest food to munch is something healthy, like pea pods or carrots.

I have always told my children and grandchildren that if you are bored I have a list of work for you to do. emoticon (They get un-bored rather quickly!!)

My oldest granddaughter a few years ago started to tell me she was bored and mid stream her

I found that if I get my mind off of food and on some other activities this helps. I find projects to do that keep me busy. When I get involved in these projects food becomes and afterthought

Take a walk. Phone a friend. Read a book/magazine. Make a "good for you" treat and have only ONE portion. Put that off as long as possible so you have something to look forward to.

WOW! So many great ideas to stem the emotional eater that lives inside me!!
Instead of a snack I will make myself that cup of hot tea. Put the earbuds in and do a little dance while I wait for the water to heat up. Yoga stretches are great too, thanks for the reminder! I'm new here and I'm finding this to be a very supportive community!
Thanks to the person who started this topic I learned I'm not in this boat alone!

Thank you for this topic. This is a very real problem for me. I have joined the stressed out women's group and stressed women getting healthy group, and followed the advise and suggestions and that has helped a lot. I track my stress days in a journal and find better ways to deal with it. I keep a drawer at work full of healthy snacks- apples, bananas, almonds, 90 calorie protein bars, sugar free gum and mints, etc. I have fresh fruit on my dining room table and kitchen counter. I make it a goal to walk or clean whenever I feel stressed. This helps relieve tension. Then I come back and address whatever is stressing me, most of the time it is something not worth stressing about. When I have real problems that a walk won't cure, I look for solutions and realize that I am human and will make mistakes and just look for a way to solve the problem. I'm a work in progress but I am making progress thanks to this site and members who blog there experiences and advice. Thank you

I try and keep healthy snacks around the house, if I have to eat something I will grab one of those snacks. I also keep chips and cookies out of the house, that is to much of a temptation.

If I am bored I will eat so I try to keep busy. I get on line and surf because I need two hands. Sometimes I'll go to bigfishgames.com and download a free game for an hour to kill time. I'll get some hot tea or some air popcorn. If I have some calories to spare I'll have 1 cup of milk with just a little chocolate syrup or don't have any chocolate syrup at all. It will fill your tummy.

When stressed, I make a cup of hot tea. Sitting there holding and sipping the warmth is soothing, much more so than food. Or I give myself a mini-massage or ask my sweet hubby for a hug. I also try to focus on deep breathing.

Once I started looking at food as nothing more than fuel for my body, my emotional eating got under control. I would ask myself when I wanted to eat mindlessly; "Why are you wanting to put "fuel" in a "gas tank" that is already full?" You would not go to the gas station and pump gas into your car's tank when you had just filled it up minutes a ago? Once I got that visual in my mind, it seemed silly to keep eating when I felt no physical hunger. I also ask myself the question; "Are you eating out of true hunger or just opportunity?" This mindset takes time, but if you practice asking yourself these questions each time you feel an emotional trigger to eat, you will be able to control it.

Give up everything you love, and everything that tastes good = weight loss! Simple as that!

"Eating what stands on one leg (mushrooms and plant foods) is better than eating what stands on two legs (fowl), which is better than eating what stands on four legs (cows, pigs, and other mammals)"....... Chinese proverb
"Food is not love, comfort, or an anxiety pill."

that it was selfish to take care of myself! , I was on the road to a healthier me. There yet? NO! but the road I was on b4 was full of deep, deep ruts! I'd fall in and it took me forever to get out now I go around that rut--most of the time!!!!

Sounds like you are on the way!!

Sipping on water or (yeah) a Diet Coke works for me. Actually, I hate the taste of Diet Coke, and so, one can last me a loooong time. I find that the snack attacks occur more often if I'm watching TV, so if I feel that urge coming on, I'm off to read a book, or go online, or play with the cats. Until I started this diet, I was never aware of how many food-related commercials are on TV. Just on & on. Healthy snacks are a good idea, too, esp. at work. Someone will bring in cake or doughnuts, or candy and it's so tempting. But, I think to myself, I have something better at my desk, and go and munch on my dried apricots, or almonds, and it works.

I sip on some hot tea, that keeps any cravings at bay. And eating small snacks and meals throughout day keeps me revved and prevents stress/boredom eating. At work, I keep a drawer of healthy snacks so when stressed out, I munch on a few almonds vs. candy dish outside of bosses office.

I try to keep myself busy and I also keep my water bottle within reach. I also keep yogurt in the fridge and have one scheduled between dinner and bed time. Those are the hours when I am most likely to want something to snack on.

Boredom:
when at work make a to do list through out the day. When you are really busy and you think of something you can do later then write it down on your to do list. Then when you start getting bored instead of looking around for a snack look at your to do list and complete it. You won't stay bored long.
that technique has worked for me in life to. I make a list of everything I want and need to do. Then when I have a moment of boredom I say: get off your ass and cross something off your list. Once you finish the task if you are still hungry then go grab a snack, a healthy, filling snack. Or try cooking a new recipe you've been wanting to. That would fix the boredom and the hunger.

Emotions:
I was raised in a family where when you're happy, you eat, when you are sad, you eat, when you are angry, you eat...you get the just of what I'm trying to say. So of course if I'm feeling any type of emotion my first motion is towards the fridge, or at least it use to be.
Now I think of rewards for myself other than: if you loose these 15 lbs I'll take you for a milkshake at cookout. It has turned into things like: if you loose these 15lbs I'll take you shopping for a new pair of shoes! or for a day of spa treatment! or for an afternoon at the festival of music in downtown. Activities like this can lift every emotional issue you have.
If those activities don't cut it for you and you still think food is the only way, then when you are feeling an emotion say to yourself: get off your ass and go do something for somebody. It will change the way you think about everything when you take interest in the people around you.

Chew gum- I read about a study recently in which participants reported reduced anxiety levels while chewing gum when performing a stressful task.

I've also been trying to be bored less... not to be too much of a Suzy Sunshine, but there's an amazing world out there!

Awesome message. Thank you.
I find that if I ask myself, "Am I hungry enough to eat an apple?"when I am about to overeat, the answer is usually "NO" and it gives me enough time to head out of the kitchen down the hall and out the door for a walk.
It's working.
Also quit drinking soda. Lot's of prayers for me to do that but let me tell ya. Way worth it. 6 days and counting, SODA FREE.
Keep the Faith,
Richard

Honestly, it is HARD to stop eating for emotional reasons when you've been accustomed to doing it. But it can be done. I think it is really important to stop and think before you reach for food to determine if you are physically hungry (it comes on slow and is more gentle). I also think it is critical to examine how you are feeling when you reach for food and then ask yourself this question - "What do I REALLY need?" Usually it is not food. Then you should develop a list of things you can do for a variety of emotions that drive you to eat. So for stress, instead of eating, you can develop a list of things you can do instead of eating that will more appropriately help you deal with your feelings - take a walk, put on some good music, call a friend, look for trips online for a vacation in the future, etc.

I have realized a few things - that it is OKAY to not give in to impulsive eating. It is okay. It may feel hard at first, but I now tell myself that it's okay to not give in because 1) I'm not really hungry 2) It makes me unhappy when I overeat 3) Food doesn't help me deal with my emotions.

I have started keeping a food journal to vent some of my feelings and track my food. It really does help.

There is nothing wrong about eating when you are hungry. But food is not an effective way to deal with your feelings. And I have found recently that I have greater clarity in my life when I'm not eating for emotional reasons. But it takes time and patience. See a psychologist who deals with food issues if you can't do it on your own.

Finally, I have found that breaking the sugar habit has helped me tame my cravings. Refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup actually feeds hunger and does not trigger satiety hormones in your brain that tell your body that you are full, so if you want to gain some control, cutting back on sugar significantly can help.

I just heard or read that if you eat with your non-domiant hand you're likely to eat less when snacking.

I'm definately a boredom sancker! I've been tempted to eat stuff I don't even like because I was bored. I told myself repeatedly I wasn't going to waste my calories on something I didn't even like. And then I climbed flights of stairs.

I don't get bored. I am always doing something and find the time flies and then I have missed a snack or lunch. That is about the time I get hungry. i have to begin to be more timely and get my 3 meals and 3 snacks in each day.

I have this problem too! I only seem to have when I have calories left for the day. It seems that I have this urge to use them all up 'just because I can.' I need to learn that if I eat the minimum it's okay to leave some calories uneaten.

I plan our meals in advance. Less meat and more veggies and fruits. Hubby has decided he likes a banana salad as well as banana pudding. We do not have junk food in our kitchen. If you need a quick snack, it has to be fruits or raw veggies. This works for us

Keep on track

Read a good book, drink water, or plan meals for the next day on SP. If I go into the kitchen, instead of grabbing food, I load or unload the dish washer.
